I'm with you my puffed out brother! Is it the same thing as thinking cave diving is legitimately insane, but enjoying those stories too? Maybe (at least for me) it's the sense that I would never have the balls to attempt any of the crazy things mountain climbers or cave divers do. Or even do it enough to have the training to attempt it! So when/if they fail, it doesn't feel quite so bad that I am not as brave or thrill seeking as them? This is just a theory I came up with right this second and may not apply to you or anyone else.

@Vertikal10002 жыл бұрын
I appreciate your focusing on this expedition. Being Norwegian myself, I can tell you that this expedition is the most mythical in our climbing history. And you cover it quite well, even there is more to story. Regarding the attempted rescue, it was actually a bit different. Dag Kolsrud ran for 3 days to the nearest city Skardu, with telephone connection. From there it took several days with diplomatic connections to get a helicopter to pick him up at Skardu, fly into the mountain to look for the missing climbers. One body was sighted, but that helicopter couldn’t land or pick it up. So it returned out of the area. One week a later a larger and better equipped operation was heading to the mountain, but the body was gone, probably swept away by an avalanche. There’s a book about the expedition, called ‘Trango, triump og tragedie’ It is written in Norwegian, so sorry for all you non-speakers of Norwegian, because it is one of best climbing books ever written.

Mount Thor on Baffin Island, the west face is the longest vertical drop on Earth: 4,101 feet (the better part of a mile!) straight down. Actually, the slope is steeper than vertical, since the face is actually a 105-degree overhang. Another nearby peak, Mt. Asgaard is also of similar difficulty as Trango Towers. All of them are ridiculously difficult summits and each one is as dangerous as the next. Cerro Torre and Mt. Fitzroy also present similar challenges.
@MorbidMidnight2 жыл бұрын
You aren't incorrect about Mount Thor, but Great Trango's east face *is* the world's largest *near* vertical drop, which is categorized differently.
@swilkobarfingtoniii16422 жыл бұрын
@@MorbidMidnight The thing about Mt. Thor is it can be relatively easily climbed from the east slope. Most people are unaware of it the mountains in Baffinland because of the extremely remote and difficult travel to get to them. The Karakorum's are positively bustling comparatively speaking.

Another well told story about mountain climbing. I learn something in every video. What a tragic end. It is out of my ken to think of spending a month on a vertical face of a mountain, and to think of weeks of descent is unbelievable because during all that time, those climber could not lose the highest level of focus during practically every single minute. Mountain climbers have my full respect.

A relative of mine was on the 1977 expedition. He was a photographer as well, wrote several books. I was at a family event, early 90s and asked him about Great Trango. He said his climbing in the Sierra Nevadas was the perfect training, because it was half rock climbing and half mountain climbing.

As a climber I do appreciate you putting in some effort to understand the technical side of things - so many of these disaster channels put in 0 effort to understand the sport and the risk factors beyond a surface level It would be interesting and help to see some videos on lower peaks - there's a whole different set of risks that average hikers are more likely to go out into without proper preparation. The white mountains of new hampshire are notorious for being deceptively dangerous and claiming the lives of unprepared hikers - even as recently as last week
