Ms R do not be nervous about your english it is very good! you are completely understandable and there is no reason to be nervous... You guys make me wish that I had learned to sail when I was a young man.. I had the opportunity to learn in the early 70's but life then was full of other adventures I had just gotten out of the USMC in 72 and was in San Francisco and had a friend that had a yacht there that was going to teach me.. But I was 20 years old and I had no time to sit in one place when there was this whole world to discover ... My loss.. But I did have an odd life! no real regrets... I will go and show some love to your friends on that other channel.. carry on, be safe and have all the fun in the sun you can stand!

I'm very happy to see that you've followed my recommendation about using oil to lubricate pawls :) To be honest with you I've made the same mistake and had to clean one of my winches 2 times ;) One more thing - it is good to use Locktite when you put back all the screws, as they like to get unscrewed over time - especially important in case of vertically mounted winches. To be honest I wouldn't change the height of the mast. Mostly because you'd move the center of the gravity higher. Which might cause different unwanted reactions, like bigger heeling or tilting. The bad thing is that you cannot see this before you actually do it. It would increase the size of the mainsail and it would be harder to operate - especially in rough seas (anyhow you should invest in single line reef system). The speed of the boat can be significantly increased by the size of the sails and this was a direction I've followed with my 40ft - Delphia 40.3. I have 100 sqm gennaker that is perfect for sailing in 70-130 degrees, it has a snuffer and I can handle it singlehanded. I have a regular jib (or genoa) plus I have a very light one which is 20% oversized vs the previous one. Additionally, I have a storm jib. That's more or less it. Have more sails of different sizes and types than change the mast. Its height has been calculated by the designers and changing it would require a lot of other changes down the mast. Changing and modifying a sail is a lot easier.

Yay! You used the proper lubricants and did a great job lubricating the parts of this winch. The only thing I'd advise has to do with the bearings. With all the other metal on metal contact points, you just want to _coat_ the parts to reduce friction and, therefore, wear. Bearings are a bit different because of the many metal on metal contact points, tight tolerances and heavy loads. Here, you don't have to be so afraid of too much grease. As I posted last week, to _pack_ a bearing, place a dollop/blob of grease in the palm of your left gloved hand. Pick up the bearing with your right hand and, with short sweeping motions, force grease *through* the bearing. This action will squeeze new, clean grease between the races and through the rollers/balls, forcing old, dirty grease out the other side. When done, wipe away the old grease, as well as any excess new grease. Bearings are so named because the quite literally "bear" the load in a moving mechanism. Because they have many small parts, with lots of metal on metal contact, wear occurs. This wear results in metal fines becoming trapped in the grease. This the reason the packing procedure. If you don't pack the bearing, and only coat the surfaces, the metal fines and other debris compromise the grease, resulting in premature bearing wear. When bearings wear, they a) become noisy (squeaking, cracking, crunching) and b) become harder to turn. This is the point where you want to repair/rebuild/replace them as soon as possible, because, when bearings break, the broken parts will damage/destroy everything around them; making for a much more expensive and costly repair/replacement. So, take note of the designations of your more common/frequently used bearings, and stock some spares. Also, put things like your winches on a regular preventative maintenance schedule where you a) inspect the bearings, gears, etc. and b) re-coat the surfaces with oil or grease and, less frequently, repack the bearings. Do this, and your equipment will provide you with many years of faithful service. By the way, the reasons old grease gets hard are a) the wrong type of grease was used, and b) the grease becomes contaminated with water, chemicals, dirt, metal fines and other debris. It's this concoction that hardens, not the grease, per se. This to say that when you see dry, cracked grease, the person before you used the wrong lubricant, did the job wrong/poorly, or it's just plain time to lubricate the equipment.
@OddLifeCrafting5 жыл бұрын
We had done this winch before you gave us the tip of the bearings 😁 thanks for all the tips

Thanks for taking the time to make the video! Like you said, Winch manufacturers recommend low viscosity grease to be applied to cogs and bearings. It is never recommended to mix grease and oil within a machine due to their chemical compositions so be careful to only use the oil very sparingly on the pawls and springs. It is also suggested you replace the pawl springs every couple of years and also the pawls when showing signs of wear. This almost certain on an older winch. They are usually a standard size for most winches and available at most chandlers. I’m glad you emphasised that regular grease should never be applied to the pawls and springs as it can cause binding which would cause a failure of the pawl to engage under toad possibly causing the winch to “freewheel” and cause injury. Instructional videos are brilliant, but if inexperienced I would recommend to download the winch manufacturers service manual. These are available for FREE online for nearly all winches new and old and will ensure correct reassembly. Needless to say, Winches are a high load, safety critical item and without proper maintenance and correct reassembly can fail with catastrophic results. Safe and happy sailing!

You guys are so great, I love your enthusiasm and the joy you seem to have in what you do and in each other. Having been married to my wife for 51 years, the best advice I can offer you is, "no matter what you do, you'll always succeed if you do it together." I love watching your videos.

You guys are legends. It’s midnight in Melbourne and I can’t stop watching your progress. I’m late to your Chanel so I’m watching in the wrong order I think. But it’s fantastic in any order!

@Odd Life Crafting, I like the positive feelings you guys put out week by week. What makes this a great video you guys are not afraid of showing your mistakes. This helps a lot. Don't worry about your english, we will learn together and give tips as you go. We will all grow by living vicariously through you videos. Wishing you all the best and success. Sidney from USA.
