Shockwave was always my favourite Decepticon. The best design. Apparently, in the comics that Marvel published around the time of the G1 cartoons, he was far more powerful, and a real rival to Megatron.

I still have those comics. They have MANY inconsistencies, and Shockwave's power from issue to issue is one of them. For example: the original (4-issue) limited series ends with him blasting all combatants apart in one shot, including Megatron and Optimus Prime. Two issues later, he beats Megatron to a pulp in single combat, but Megatron holds his own... kind of. By issue 12, he's so weak that Optimus Prime chucks him into a tar pit and rolls away. Much later (issue 38ish?) he ends up dueling Fortress Maximus in space, whom he can apparently match. And so on...

The planet was in shambles and depleted of energon when Prime and Megatron disappeared. He rebuilt most of Cyberton's structures, created new, deadlier killing machines and everything ran efficiently while Megatron was away. Shockwave is a heartless tyrant, but damn that guy can work.

Fun niche fact I just recently learned from a fellow commenter: The voice actor for Shockwave based his performance on the character "Sark" from the 1981 movie Tron. Decades later, in the 2005 video game Kingdom Hearts II, the actor for Shockwave was hired to voice the character of Sark. Kinda full circle

Within the story, it was alluded to, but admittedly never outright explained, that both sides were dangerously low on energon and power so they were basically walking/flying/etc around on life support which explained why they suddenly became so vulnerable to even the simplest of attacks...of course, we know in the real world they had to make room for new toys so someone had to go to the bench, so to speak, to make room in the lineup :) As for other inconsistencies throughout the show glorious run , hey man, it was the "magic of the 80's"...

Out of all of the Decepticons, Shockwave was and still to this day remains my all time favourite Transformer. He was the whole package, incredibly smart, cold, calculating and of course evil. I always enjoyed the episodes that were set on Cybertron because i knew we would get to see Shockwave have more screen time and play a big role in the stories. Love the fact that Shockwave was voiced by Corey Burton who would later go on to provide the of voice Brainiac for Superman the animated series who was also another cold unfeeling villainous machine. A Decepticon who remained behind on Cyberton and protected the planet as it's guardian for 4 million years deserves true respect. I wished we had got an episode where Shockwave came to earth and joined the Decepticons in battle against the Autobots, i think that would have been a lot of fun. Shockwave is easily in my top 3 favourite Decepticons.

It turned out, Shockwave was killed by Unicron during the attack on Cybertron. Although his death was on the movie script, it was never animated in the final cut. This explains why he never appeared in Season 3.
