I remember as a teenager in '72 when this came out, I would listen to this over and over ad nauseam until my Dad said don't think you're gonna be going all the way anytime soon. I honestly didn't know what that meant and I wasn't about to ask him. It just struck a chord with my adolescent self and I love it to this day. Thanks for this, guys!

I totally feel you about not asking Dad, when I was about 9-10 somehow was reading a book from a church that was for young teens, it mentioned masturbation, I tried to figure out what it was by the context but couldn’t figure it out, my Dad was only one home with me that day so I asked him, well he hemmed and hawed, finally told me it was something boys did, and it would make you go blind. I didn’t tell him that I figured out finally what he was talking about, I’m not sure who was more embarrassed, him or me!

It's 10.30pm Tuesday night 12/03/2024 and I've just flicked the T.V. over to Ch 9 in Sydney. They were showing The Raspberries "Go all the Way" I thought "Why are they playing that?" "Is Eric touring soon?" Then I thought "Oh no he hasn't died" "Has he?" My fears were confirmed by the news voice over person. "Eric Carmen was 74" Now I can't stop crying. Not only did Eric help create one of the greatest, mind blowing Guitar riffs in Rock history, he then composed some of the most tasteful Ballads of all time. Good quality Ballads are extremely hard to write. Thanks for the great music and the brilliant singing voice Eric. Eric lived a successful existence and died peacefully in his sleep. This was my dad's favorite song from his high school years. He used to tell me when he was a sophomore in 1972, this song was playing in a juke box his school cafeteria had during lunch. He would literally cheer every time he heard this song in Guardians of the Galaxy and in Dark Shadows. When he died in 2018, I was cleaning my room and had my windows open. Midway through the song, I looked outside and there was a cardinal watchinf me. I like to think that was him checking on me listening to his favorite song again 🥺❤

@Tessmage Tessera Well in some ways yes but of course the female vocals are usually a huge part of ABBA's sound while the Beatles really never featured female singers at all. Badfinger and the Raspberries were similar to the Beatles in band structure and it is possible to envision the Beatles singing their songs.

Go All The Way is one of the greatest power-pop hits of the early 1970's, and has stood the test of time. It has been used in so many different movie/tv scenes, such as "Almost Famous", "Guardians of the Galaxy", and the television series "Life On Mars". Eric Carmen was a classically trained musician who wrote very complex musical works and GATW is his most famous and successful creation. One can't help but to immediately recognize the song after hearing only 2 seconds of the intro. A true power-pop anthem. I have loved this song since the first time it came blaring out of the AM radio in my Buick Skylark in 1972.

Absolutely agree this is one of the greatest power pop hits of all time. I'm from North Central Ohio so the Raspberries were local heroes. It is interesting that Eric Carmen wrote this from the woman's point of view, where SHE wanted to "Go All the Way" (that's why the "slow" part). This song went to #5 on the Hot 100 in 1972. I just wonder how big this group would have been had Carmen not left for a solo career.

Sadly, after Raspberries went through the personnel changes and released their fourth and final album, Starting Over", things went downhill and the band had a traumatic breakup in 1975. Eric Carmen said on stage during a reunion concert in 2006 at B.B. King's in NYC that "All By Myself" would have been the Raspberries next single if the band hadn't dissolved.@@dougclark7077

The lead singer of the Raspberries, Eric Carmen, was a musical prodigy. He was in a music program at the Cleveland Institute of Music at the age of three, began violin lessons by the age of six, played piano proficiently by the age of eleven, and taught himself to play the guitar after becoming unhappy with his guitar teacher's approach. His solo career includes such hits as "All By Myself," "Never Gonna Fall in Love Again," "Hungry Eyes" (from Dirty Dancing), and "Make Me Lose Control."

Eric Carmen is an American singer, songwriter and musician who is best known for his 1975 hit song "All by Myself" which reached the Top 5 in the U.S. and Canada. He was born on August 11, 1949, in Cleveland, Ohio, and began playing the piano and guitar at an early age. In the early 1970s, Carmen was a member of the Raspberries, a power pop band that enjoyed commercial success with hits like "Go All the Way" and "Overnight Sensation (Hit Record)." After the band's breakup in 1975, Carmen embarked on a successful solo career and released several popular albums, including his self-titled debut in 1975 and "Boats Against the Current" in 1977. In addition to "All by Myself," some of Carmen's other notable hits include "Never Gonna Fall in Love Again," "She Did It," and "Hungry Eyes," which was featured in the movie "Dirty Dancing." Carmen has continued to write and perform music over the years, and was inducted into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame in 2018.

Raspberries lead singer and bass player Eric Carmen wrote this song. He went on to fame as a solo artist ("Hungry Eyes") and songwriter ("All By Myself"). This song is about a girl trying to convince a guy to "Go all the way," meaning to have sex with him. Carmen told Blender magazine in 2006 that he was inspired by The Rolling Stones performance of "Let's Spend The Night Together" when Mick Jagger had to sing it as "Let's spend some time together." Said Carmen, "I knew then that I wanted to write a song with an explicitly sexual lyric that the kids would instantly get but the powers that be couldn't pin me down for." When this pop rock band formed in Cleveland, they had no name, and some of the suggestions that came forth were outrageous, bringing lead singer Eric ‘The Kid’ Carmen to a point of desperation in which he cited a favorite expression from the classic comedy The Little Rascals Our Gang where Stymie said, “I’ll get you, you little punk!” and Spanky responded “Aw, razz-berries!” The group is called The Raspberries, but they are not the edible fruit. Blowing a raspberry is a is a lot like making a fart sound and it is done by sticking out your tongue and blowing hard.

Eric Carmen isn't the bass player for the Raspberries. Dave Smalley was the bass player along with Jim Bonafanti (drums), and Wally Bryson (lead guitar). Eric Carmen played rhythm guitar.

This is the quintessential power pop song. You want to hear a rocker by the Raspberries? Yall need to check out "Tonight."...I have gone through their whole discography and it's their heaviest song, in my opinion. "I Wanna Be With You" is another good song from them. I wish you guys would react to another great power pop song called "I'm on Fire" by the Dwight Twilley Band, who's from Tulsa. I've requested it several times. It made it to number 16 on the Billboard top 40 in 1975. Dwight Twilley and Tom Petty were great friends, and on the same record label, Shelter Records out of Tulsa. The Raspberries, Badfinger and the Dwight Twilley Band are all examples of '70s power pop at its finest.

Also check out the Raspberries' "Overnight Sensation" and "Tonight" -- the first is a beautiful power pop ballad, and "Tonight" is power pop perfection. Rest in music, Eric Carmen -- a gifted songwriter, arranger, and performer.

The lead singer of this group, Eric Carmen had a solo career for awhile and had a few big hits. "All By Myself" that Celine Dion kis known for was his big hit first, and he wrote it. He had another great song, "Boats Against the Current." The only other big hit I can recall by The Raspberries is "I Wanna Be With You" which is a great more rocking song with some 50's vibes.

When the Beatles broke up in 1970, the hunt was on for bands that had that "Fab Four" sound and the two best were Badfinger and the Raspberries. "Go All the Way" from 1972 was the Raspberries first hit and they it followed up with several more fine singles, including "I Wanna Be With You", "Let's Pretend", "Tonight", "Ecstasy", and "Overnight Sensation."

That is what makes the song great. It's got that rocking part in those sweet hooks. This pop song takes you on a roller coaster ride. You go swooping down that hill and then it's slowly brings you up for another big swoop. It's easy to stay on one track put the bride is more fun than they can switch back and forth between lanes

Hearing this song gave me instant flashbacks of summer vacation as a kid, hanging out at the Dog n Suds listening to the outdoor sound system. I checked, and sure enough, it was released in July of 1972 when I was 7. Such happy memories. If you want a fun follow up song from this group, go with "I Wanna Be With You". Just fun power pop. Nothing more or less.
