You really need to catch the episode of Arrested Development where Michael Bluth (Jason Bateman), grabs his niece, Maeby, and jumps on stage to duet on this song in order to enliven the family company's holiday party - the look on his face when he realizes what the song is about, and that he's singing it to his niece, is priceless comedy gold! My sides hurt just thinking about it! 🤣

There is an old Murphy Brown episode that featured this song. Now that hilarious!

It also pops up memorably (and humorously) during "Good Will Hunting," and later plays over the closing scene. It's hard for me to hear it without thinking of this and the Arrested Development scenes (not just Michael and Maeby singing it, but later Lindsay and George Michael, to similar effect).

Im enjoying this reaction in particular....and amazed Amber caught the meaning so quickly. Back in the day, this song was getting a lot of attention around 1976 for the 'fireworks' lyrics.....which coincided nicely with our 200th anniversary of Independence day. As a young guy, this song was everywhere for a while....radio AND TV. Still makes me laugh to think about all the people who figured out the true meaning of the song. Good times, great react. Keep up the good work guys.

Went all the way to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles back in 1976. I remember this song getting heavy radio airplay for several months back in those days. It's still cool to hear after all these years.

As a 7 year old when this song came out I would sing with it when it came on the radio. I'm pretty sure my mom and dad had no idea what it was really about at first.

Rob Squad, I am amazed that you have not heard all of these songs. I keep watching your reaction to the best music - Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Jethro Tull, so many more, and this Afternoon Delight! I long for your souls to be fulfilled by the music of the 50's, 60's, and part of the 70's. I cannot imagine the social problems caused by not knowing this beautiful music. With time and immersion in good music, your souls may be restored.

Amber is the one who usually doesn't get the sexual innuendo, but most people in the 70's never realized it because the group was so squeaky clean. There is a great Arrested Development episode where the Jason Bateman character joins his niece for a karaoke rendition of this song, neither one realizing the meaning of the song. When they start singing it to each other, they finally turn to the audience only to see them all aghast with shock and horror and Jason realizes finally what they are singing and grabs his niece and they run off the stage. Jason says to her as they flee "Never knew the song was about that."

People in the 70s got it. Maybe you missed it and no one around you would clue you in, but it was understood by most. It certainly helped in acceptance that the band was 2 married couples.

"Afternoon Delight" hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 2 weeks in 1976. A true one-hit wonder. However, the group received a Grammy for Best New Artist of 1976 beating Boston, Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band ("Cherchez La Femme"), The Brothers Johnson ("I'll Be Good To You"), and Wild Cherry ("Play That Funky Music "). The record was also Grammy nominated for Song of the Year, Record of the Year, & Pop Vocal -Duo, Group or Chorus and won for Arrangement For Voices (Duo, Group or Chorus).

They definitely need to react to Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band and Cherchez La Femme. That is so different and great.

And a little more trivia. The song "Take me Home, Country Roads" which was recorded by John Denver was co written by Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert, along with Denver. They also sang backup on the song. These two were actually married, and they went on to form the Starland Vocal Band along with John Carroll and Margot Chapman. ;)
