I posted a comment last night that seems to have been removed. Maybe it wasn't spooky enough!. My dad worked there from 1940 to 1969 when it was Jackson and Brother, an engineering company established in 1792 and known as Wharf Foundry. The Bolton-Bury canal was at the side of the site (where St. Peter's Way is now), handy for bringing in the coal, iron, etc needed by the foundry. The company was taken over by Mather and Platt in the late 1950s who eventually closed it down in 1976 and the buildings sold off. The building you explored contained the offices where dad worked and I worked there in the Summer of 1967. It was a very pleasant building to work in during the day time but I never went there at night. The other buildings in the complex were the foundry and a large wash room so that the men could have a shower before they went home. The office building is very old, probably an original building from 1792. It should be listed for its historical/heritage value. Such a shame it's been allowed to deteriorate. As another poster commented, this area of Bolton is ancient - the original site of Bolton was around there. No doubt it could tell some stories!! Well done for your courage in exploring the building and highlighting the terrible state it's in. I wish someone would buy and restore it.

Yeah I knew it was part of Jackson Bros originally Icve been researching it myself too so thanks for clarifying as for comments getting removed I havent removed one and Im the only person who can. When the site closed in 1976, Ernie Taylor, one of the managers, deposited quite a bit of old stuff from the company with Bolton Archives and I still have some old documents from the 1800s that my dad found in the safe there.

Booths Engineering.. worked there in late 83 as a turner after Walkers closed.. You only got in the management and admin offices. The big safes were "payroll friday" brown envelope and off to the Dog and Partridge just up the road for a few sly jars and the friday arvo lockin... That boarded up door on the ground floor leads out to the yard and a vast industrial works.. The big machine is a steam hammer.. old one.. think they said it was there because it's an actual Napier one.. should be in a museum.. it's too heavy for the scrappers.. I note.. not a single knob anywhere.. no paintworks at all.. but it's been empty for more than 10 years by my reckoning now.. The posh smaller rooms were the "showroom".. with the retail counter arrangement at one point.. that's why the small safe there.. I hated working there on nights in winter.. always seeing movement out of the corner of your eye.. know what I mean?.. and then home to Westbrook St.. (back of the now gone college) most of it bricked up waiting to be pulled down. That's one of the oldest areas of Bolton.. habitation and industry there going back to the 1400's so no surprise it's got more than a few scary things. The one on the stairs well got you lads.. hahaha.. I will ask my pal Kaz if she knows about that one.. she worked in the offices there for a good few years.. Interesting to note.. up the road from there is a high gable end with some very steep cobbles (water st) leading up to the back of a carpark (nowhere).. which was a joiners/cabinet works built in about 1690.. and pulled down on the sly in 1992.. the streets are Brown St and Well St and the site was once called Wharf Foundry. Imagine.. being 17.. living on a mostly boarded up street overlooking the river.. after the street lights had been pulled out.. walking to work on the night shift in the dark in the middle of winter.. down past the back of the old baths. (westbrook street is still there just.. just the road...) across the main road and down River St, then along a path at the back of the church.. and the narrow path beside the river at the back of the works.. a relief to get in the creepy place in all honesty.. No wonder I'm not scared of the dark.........

I live just up the road from there. That place always creeped me out; especially the water roaring into that culvert! My missus recons that may have been something to do with a priest hole. Although Bolton Parish is Gothic Revival; there's been a church on that site since the 1100's so throughout the sites history there may have well been secret tunnels or escape routes built such as Deane Church, further up the road towards Westoughton (owned by the Hilton's (Pretoria pit and all that)).
