Today we will be going over all of the characters of the Amazing Digital Circus- human, AI, NPC, or whatever's in between! We're going to dive into what we know about this freakshow of wonders and see if we can learn anything new.

That's some pretty nice trivia! 19:23 It's not that it's not real, it's more than the official Stockholm Syndrome as it was proposed back then doesn't actually work like it's said to be, so it never left the theorical stage. I think there's more to Jax than he shows. He clearly tries to distance himself from the others and whole antagonistic deal seems to be his unhealthy method of coping. Did you notice? He only refers to the rest of the cast as "characters" rather than people. He does this repeatedly. Several times through the pilot, he looks upset by unexpected stuff but then hides it behind his smugness a moment later. Yeah, he runs away from the eldrich clown, but then finds Kinger and Gangle, the two most vulnerable people there, hides the fact that anything is wrong, and then takes them with him (via bowling ball) when it seems like the monster is coming their way. In a bizarre way, he's protecting them. He seems to be hiding stuff from them because it would genuinely upset them and possibly bring them one step closer to abstracting too. He looks nervous that somebody else is going to notice every time another sign of the abstraction shows up like the corrupted gloink. He's still a jackass, but he's secretly looking out for the others even as he torments them because he's afraid to get attatched but also afraid to lose them. And he hides it all behind the smug smile because showing it would make him vulnerable.

This is what I came here to speculate about Jax, particularly with the scene of him rejoining with Gangle and Kinger. Sure, he was a jackass about it, but he didn’t *have* to bring them with him and could have easily left them in the same area as Kafumo. He only chose to throw them down the hole when he heard him nearby. And maybe it’s just me reading too far into it, but his behavior reads as a sort of whimsical, protective detachment from it all. Given that pretty much every other member of the cast is not very mentally stable and the circus has worn them down, it kind of feels like this is just the way Jax copes with it. (I could be completely misreading the situation, though. I’m looking forward to seeing future episodes and learning whether my suspicion is correct!)

My theory is that he actually doesn't care anything than himself, and him kind of protecting the others is just because he's afraid of being all alone whit nobody to torture or bother, since making others suffer helps him not to be vulnerable, go crazy and abstract, also bc he's afraid of the fact that if another one gets abstracted, then it's totally possible that this happens to him too and avoids being one step closer from this fate by "protecting" the others from this He hides all of these things by being a jerk But i like i like your theory much more! Jax reminds me of Kokichi from Danganrompa 3 (which kinda matches the vibe of the circus, but the circus is much more positive) and that makes me scared for him. Like, I'm sorry, but please don't make anything happen to him.

That's a good point, but it isn't true that he ONLY ever refers to the others as "characters" instead of as people. Right before the group splits up, he says, "I'm fine with doing whatever, as long as I get to see funny things happen to people." He does see them as people, but he'll only admit it when he's picking on them. In my opinion, he definitely cares about them (for all the reasons you and others in this conversation have mentioned), but his sarcasm and generally rude behavior make it easy for him to keep himself together. After all, what do you do in simulation games? Some may take them seriously, while others trap all of their sims in the pool and watch them drown. If he treats the world like a simulation -- something that isn't real and has no real consequences -- he can play along and keep his spirits high so he doesn't abstract. His way of protecting himself is picking on others because he finds it funny.

The funny thing is that he always speaks through his teeth due to his perpetual mischief and deception (i.e. lying through one's teeth). I also noticed that Michael Kovach (his voice actor) is (I think) speaking Jax's lines through his teeth, which really adds to that feel.

Zooble mentions when realising Kaufmo abstracted that they can’t believe he just ‘gave up’ which makes me think that you can keep yourself from abstraction by just being determined. I don’t think Kinger will abstract anytime soon because he doesn’t seem mentally here enough to ‘give up’. Maybe if he eventually snaps out of it and tells Pomni about what happened to Queenie he’ll then give up and abstract.

The way Ragatha describes it, abstracting is questioning why you should go on and hating the place kinda like some existential crisis. He gave up because he kept thinking of exiting and hating the digital circus. Kinger is insane but not because he wants to leave or doesn’t see the point of staying there. If Kaufmo stopped focusing on an escape he wouldn’t have abstracted

He does try to make an exit, but he says he doesn’t know what to put on the other side. He is still an AI, he probably doesn’t know about the real world or how to get there, openly says he doesn’t know what is out in the void. So he probably can’t get them out even if he wanted too. 19:10 The one problem with that is that Caine seemingly can’t let people out, seeing as he tried to make an exit because the denizens wanted it and yet wasn’t able to. Also yeah, Stockholm syndrome fully isn’t a thing. The psychologist who came up with it never even talked to the woman from the bank he diagnosed with it, all because she tried to reason with the prime minister because she was terrified she’d die in a failed rescue operation because the cops had messed up every other stage of the situation. The cops fully used the idea to avoid criticism.

@@SkyBlue-gb3qxwell he could, but regardless Caine is just a NPC and doesn’t actually understand what reality is like or maybe can’t even grasp the concept of it beyond the things he’s been told about it by contestants/players and the fundamental aspects of it that he was coded to understand in order to manage players and make maps similar to reality, and since he’s just an NPC even if he is the gamemaster theres definitely no way he could help them escape the game especially if its true he doesn’t understand what reality is, so he could understand they want to leave and even want that himself more than continuing the game but it wouldn’t do any good since he cannot change anything, so he’d do the second best thing and just let the game go on- maybe even make a fake reality to the best of his abilities and knowledge to try and cheer them up.

It's not that Caine wasn't able to make an exit door. True, it might not be possible to leave, but he actually _did_ make an exit door...as in a door with the word "exit" on it. The issue is it never occurred to him that they all wanted a way out of the simulation. He thought they just wanted a change in scenery, and he couldn't decide what kind of scenery it should be, so he left it unfinished.

Yeah, I think Caine isn't their captor. If creating an exit was within his power, the circus residents would have manipulated him into making one by now. Re. the idea that Caine's failure to make an exit is merely conceptual, I don't think that's true. We saw there *was* an area behind the door, and it was attempting to mimic reality. Caine knew that outside the circus, there is an office building in the real world, and _was_ trying to build an exit that would lead there, he just ended up building an exit that lead to his digital replica of the outside.

Something I noticed about the digital circus cast is that other than kinger they all represent one of the 5 stages of grief. Pomni is denial with rejecting staying there forever desperate for an exit. Zooble is anger with not caring and being irritated at everyone Ragatha is bargaining as she is hopeful about the place and tries keeping everyone positive. She insists the place isn’t that bad and does caines games as it is something to do. Gangle is depression as they are crying and literally hiding behind a mask Jax is acceptance as he doesn’t care that they are there and just annoys everyone because he’s fine with being there. They all show different coping mechanisms and even kaufmo shows a coping mechanism by using humour. Kinger seems to be the exception because he has lost it.

I'm just going to say; Jax does seem to care about the other characters to some extent, and redirects the other characters' anger away from each other and onto himself(Gangle's mask at the beginning, for example), and he also shows care for Kinger and Gangle, as when he hears Kaufmo approaching, he knocks them into the hole to get them away.

@tau-5794 considering the amusement park and the Cafe, I think he may have wanted to make a whole TOWN. The Cafe was the only finished part and he frequently visits it to try and think of ideas for the rest of the town. The reason there is the office is because that was actually a placeholder. I can see him after finally talking about the exit for once actually asking for feedback on what they would like to see and do on the other side of it. Cue Jax going on to do some really crazy stuff with the creative freedom and gangle being the person to actually make that town area in terms of ideas

Yeah he doesn’t seem intentionally malicious or evil. The only thing that he was hiding was this art block of his and didn’t want to disappoint them by not finishing the exit. I don't think Caine is evil or will become evil. I think he's just a computer program designed to keep the players happy and safe. Everything he does is to ensure the players have fun. With the context that this show is partially inspired by Harlan Ellison’s 1967 short story “I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream”, Caine’s whole deal becomes a lot more interesting because it feels to me that he has an opposite vibe to AM, the sentient ai that’s the big villain of that story. AM loathes humanity and keeps them alive specifically to torment them. Caine on the other hand gives me the vibes of a six year old with their first pet hamster. They love it dearly but they don’t understand it enough to give it what it needs and so it suffers.

I noticed that in the scene where they are going to the clown's room Jax seems a little uncomfortable and walking without looking around, this could be just to show his sarcastic attitude but considering he chose to be there it could also indicate that he is affected by the situation as the doors have marks to indicate who is gone, looking at them can remind him of previous members and how he could be next, and if he actually has the keys to the rooms he may have seen something inside them that made him even more uncomfortable, so he tries to not even look at the doors.

Tbh Jax and Raggatha remind me of that one couple that keeps their relationship private but that have been a thing so long everyone knows and just roles with it. I also got the impression Caine isn't actually in control of anything outside the game, and was actively trying to appease both those in his care and *someone* watching from the top. Plus as an AI he is blissfully unaware of how animals (humans included) act when trapped. Technically he is also in digital prison, but it is also his home.

@@sunx9424 That I might have misread, and their relationship may be recalibrated to better reflect an older sister and younger brother in the first episode. I don't care about the ships (yet). I'm just observing group dynamics. Ships aren't ready to sail yet, they are still all in the harbour. You are privileged to your own opinions, it doesn't offend me in the least- Other than people brute force pairing Pomni with everyone, which feels icky to me. She is way too vulnerable right now and if a character actually started hitting on her in this state it would be borderline taking advantage.

In regards to the “insect collection” Kinger kept rambling on about, a current fan theory which I think makes the most sense is that he was either a Beta-tester hired by C&A, or to go even deeper, one of the original developers of The Digital Circus. As one of the oldest residents trapped there, he likely went in just to make sure the game was running smoothly; and these “insects” he refers to could be bugs or glitches within the system. Also, I’m glad I’m not only one pointing out Popee the Performer parallels with Jax and Gangle. Ragatha more likely fake laughed at Kaufmo's jokes because like Gangle she was in a depressive mood at the time, since she's the only character who actually fears abstracting so much that she had to give up her desire to escape to maintain her mental health, even though she is plagued by that fear. It's important to note that while Caine isn't evil he did actually lie and hid information of the exit which is the reason why Kaufmo went insane since nobody believed him about it.

12:34 as some other people have pointed out, queenie is in fact a _black_ piece, the opposing color of the white team kinger is on. this could likely mean that kinger's paranoia doesn't stem from having queenie leave, but having her be there in the first place. due to her assumed power, she likely picked on kinger to the point he became paranoid of being hurt by others. this can also lead to an explanation as to why she abstracted first, while kinger has outlived at least one other character, kaufmo. her violent personality lead her, and was likely caused by, a break down, which lead to her abstraction. but kinger's mind seems to have gone with the dissociation/derealization route instead, keeping him farther away from abstraction.

Also side note: Cain at least seems to try to want to make the inhabitants of the Circus happy. This is noted in the plot's ending where everyone mentions "wanting to find an exit". So he... works on making one. But all it does is lead from one basic storage room to another... and another and another until it just leads into the void, and when Pomni ends up there and he corrects everything, he openly apologizes to everyone for leading them on and says that he kept hearing they wanted an exit but he couldn't figure out what to put on the other side and so the project was unfinished and very much was not a way out of the game. The fact he came clear and was honest about it by the end of the pilot shows he does have more caring to him than just "I wanna be entertained" and even does what he can within his understanding to try and make the occupants of his world comfortable. And again, he says outright that he can't control their minds. He can't fabricate memories or feelings or anything of the sort and he's very open about it.

I like to believe Jax is the least unstable mentally because he is constantly trying to make entertaining stuff happen for him, pranking others and causing mischief must keep him entertained enough to where he doesn’t think about everything wrong like there being no escape in this surprisingly small false world. This is further backed by the fact that everything that happens because of Caine seems to be trying to prevent insanity by keeping the characters active in a way to where they don’t dwell on things, Jax just so happens to be really good at this by choosing to get involved in ways to where he isn’t bored.

One slight problem to the Queeny theory. All that you said about chess is correct, but it is important to note the colors. After all a king's protector is a queen of the same color, and likewise a queen of the opposite color is the most terrifying thing of all. I personally believe that Kinger is so scared due to the time he spent around Queeny, his natural predator.

A'ight, here's my theories. They're all based around the idea that the crew were all developers of the Digital Circus, or otherwise part of C&A's payroll. Ragatha's ability to dismiss abuse, her button eye, being a literal rag-doll in a game gives me the vision of a battered woman who's used to it. Even her trailer has her get a cleaver to the head and smile it off, before twirling it and putting it away; she's used to it. Jax's keys and overalls gives me the impression of a maintenance guy. Maybe a janitor. Having been a mop-jockey myself, I can get where the attitude comes from with that mentality. He could also be someone who was in charge of maintaining the game somehow. But he has more access than he should, if Ragatha's reaction to his keys has anything to do with it. He also seemed weirdly interested in the buggy gloink. Speaking of bugs and game maintainance, Kinger's "Insect Collection" comments could be his mind trying to talk about a "Bug report". If he's been in there the longest, he could have been one of the first to test the game and get sucked in. It's also notable that while he's a white king, Queenie's a black queen. Opposing forces, with the latter having much more movement/power than the former. Maybe Kinger and Queenie were rivals, and what broke Kinger was seeing the biggest threat to him abstract. Also the game is over if the king is taken, so.... You pretty much handled my ideas on Gangle. But her body being ribbons, with no real mass, is noteworthy. She is easily pushed around, has no weight both literally and otherwise, literally can't win RPS. She's a pushover, and probably depressed as hell because of it. Being an artist who has a body pillow also gives the impression of someone who craves contact and an outlet to express herself. Zooble...I've got no fuckin' clue. Hot mess with a hot voice. Pomni's name means "remember" in Russian, leading me to think Kaine knows more about who they were before. That he says he has control over pretty much everything (except their minds) really makes me question that slot machine's "random pick". Anyways she's small and weak, and a jester meant to be a symbol of honest. I'm thinking that, aside from not being a part of the company, if she was she was so far on the ladder that she might have been an intern or even a new hire. Pomni went somewhere she wasn't meant to, and is suffering for it. As far as the Cain and Able idea goes, I think that has ground since the last image we see before zooming out is a recreation of The Last Supper. I'm thinking that Kaine is the "Able", and that the actual Cain is the reason they're all trapped.

My theory is that instead of their bodies being pulled into the digital world, it’s very possible that the headset only copies their personalities/memories and creates a persona in the digital world based on the information it collected. It’s very possible that there is no way in or out of the simulation and that over time they’ll find out that they’re not real people, only copies of people in the outside world. It’s possible that details like their names are forgotten for that reason.

If I had to guess just purely looking at their designs and based on the posibility that they may be related to who they were, I think the characters in their real lives may have been: Ragatha - A kindergarden teacher. That's why she's a doll (a common toy for little girls) and also why she's used to being nice to everyone around her. Gangle - An actress. That's why she has the comedy and tragedy mask. Or if you want some other possibility, maybe some kind of screenwritter (maybe for a game?). Jaxxx - A farmer. That's why he has clothes that look like a farmer overol and also why he is a rabbit. Zooble - I think she was probably an artist. Most likely focused on abstract paintings, abstract sculptures, etc. That's why she looks like that. Kaufmo - He was probably a comedian. Most likely a clown in the real world that ended up being a clown in the digital circus world as well. That would explain why his body seems to be made of balloons. And if he really was a clown in real life it would also mean that his jokes were primarily meant for kids (which would explain why an adult like Ragatha wouldn't find them that funny). Kinger - I'd argue that the comment about "bug collection" could be actually be referring to computer bugs/glitches. So he may be a programmer for the digital circus that ended up trapped in the glitched digital circus game and went crazy. His design being a chess figure and her clothes being related to royalty makes me think that was an authority figure in the real world in the place where he worked. So probably something like a lead developer in the company known as C&A that we see in the pilot. Pomni - I think she may have been an intern of some kind in a big company (maybe C&A?). That would explain why she stated that she was wearing a headset when she first appeared. Her being a jester makes me think she was probably not taken seriously, being"the butt of the joke". Her nervous/anxious personality fits usual depictions of interns and new workers in a company that we usually see in media as well. And if we look to all these potential real world roles, with the exception of Kinger and Pomni (that most likely just worked at C&A), almost all of them seem to be related to things that a kid would like or need for a company that is developing a game.Which makes me think that they may have been contacted to help with the game in some shape or form and then got trapped or tricked into entering the game. Like Ragatha could've been called for the educational aspect of the game (meant for kids), Gangle for something like voice acting (if she was an actress) or to write the story or characters in the game, jaxxx because kids like cute animals and he probably knows a lot about them, kaufmo for jokes for kids, zooble for background designs for the game, etc.

My theory is Caine was created by others higher power then him, and was given a goal of keeping the “contestants” entertained and sane. I think when Pomni was talking about seeing an exit and Caine brought up the whole “digital hallucinations,” it was a cover up for the actual exit, hence why he seemed nervous, fiddling his fingers and looking somewhat guilty. The way I see it, Caine isn’t being controlled, but was created and forced to do what his creators say, and telling the humans any bit of the truth could get him deleted. (Killed.) So in conclusion, Caine isn’t evil, he’s been created for one sole purpose; keep the truth hidden.

I saw a theory on caufmo that they managed to escape. The exits on the wall on their room are different than the exit pomni found and maybe caufmo escaped and the software (I think) couldn’t really handle and or understand what to do with their player data and so their player got corrupted and became abstracted

It's either that, the humans' consciousnesses were literally absorbed from the real world into the digital, or what I believe, which is that the characters we see are not actual humans but AI copies of their personalities, who aren't aware they're not real. It's why Pomni can't remove a headset, she "remembers" putting one on but isn't actually wearing one, and also why none of them can remember their names, they're just digital approximations of a personality, and personalities don't have names.

According to the power scaling, Jax is physically the strongest of the bunch being able to YEET a bowling ball with no effort and move faster than the speed of light not to mention he's no stranger to getting physical such as breaking the "Spare" sign and kicking that one bowling pin for no reason. 2nd must be Zooble cause she can strangle Jax but she falls apart (literally) too easily hence why shes 2nd.

Kinger is the most interesting character to me because he works almost *exactly* like the chess piece. When someone sneaks up on him, it represents how the king is “in check”. a couple of theories: 1. Maybe Queenie was Kinger's wife in the real world and when she abstracted that made Kinger lose his mind although he hasn't abstracted yet. 2. Caine says the only thing he can't control is their minds, and he seemingly can't make an actual exit, so maybe the exit is in the character's minds. 3. I don't think Caine actually brings people in the game, since he says a new human has wandered into this realm. 4. there are always a set number of characters in the circus, fulfilling certain toy themes and when one abstracts, another one is brought into the circus. I don't think that it's a coincidence that Pomni, a yellow, red, and blue clown just so happens to show up the exact same day that Kaufmo, a yellow, red, and blue clown ended up abstracting. I also don’t think it’s a coincidence that both their names have the same amount of syllables, meaning Pomni’s name is an easy slot in for Kaufmo’s in the theme song. That's what I thought it would be! The crossed out rooms having similar designs/themes to the main characters made me think that once one gets abstracted, anyone who dares touch the cursed headset actually takes in effect to get sucked in because you know how a game can't possibly work when they're missing a source code of a certain archetype. If otherwise, it just works like any other normal headset. A lot of people have speculated that Kinger and Queenie may have known each other and got in the game at the same time, but going by this theory's logic - It's unlikely they can co-exist without precautions knowing the route this series is going to take. Yes, it is still possible (knowing it might explain Kinger's paranoia and state of mind) but you get what I mean..

Ragatha actually is my favorite character, although Zooble comes *really* close. Zooble might become a favorite later on, mostly because we didn't see much of them during the pilot. I dunno, there's something about Ragatha, she's very clearly compassionate, and aside from what you mentioned she seems very mentally *there*. I got the impression she genuinely seems to be engaging with the reality of her situation very deeply. It doesn't hurt that from the chest-up she's basically Molly Coddle from Bump In The Night, and I've loved Molly since I saw the show as a kid. I'm excited to see more of Zooble, they have one of those personalities I just can't help but love. Grouchy and sassy, liable to tease but not in a gleeful malicious way like Jax. Plus I just have a thing for Mangle-ish characters, something about them speaks to me. Maybe it's the trans part of me as someone who's modified their body to try to reflect what's inside, so "Mangled" body-type characters speak to me. I know what it's like to be modular.

I think Caine is just trying his best to do his one role: Let the players have fun He leaves them alone on an adventure that's proven by games like DND to work, giving them private rooms and delicious food. He builds the world, wanting it to work perfectly before he shows the crew and feeling remorse for when he had to lie and gaslight. He seems like the most sensible guy there besides Ragatha, and he may have a very good arc where he slowly learns just how messed up his world is and how hard he must actually work to keep it intact

Honestly this is just a character theory but I personally think Jax is the way he is because either A. It’s a way to cope with his situation and keep from abstracting or B. He knows he can have fun and pull pranks without any real consequences. Or both. And I do believe he cares about the others in his own way.

I like the idea jax is actually a leader- He gets kinger and gangle together to the the adventure (the adventure is "ment" to keep them sane, and a near gone clone might of taken down there mental state) He also takes them both into the hole, as he said "I'm just here to hide" In theory his actions are that of someone who knows what there doing and trying to do what's best at any given moment

I have an Amazing Digital Circus OC of my own, and I'd like to share it here. His name is Sleuthor, his name rhymes with Luthor, and he's inspired by Sherlock Holmes. Since I can't really draw well, I'll just describe how he looks here. He is a human action figure as tall as Jax, has a unibrow, and has a small thin mustache. His most notable feature is a brown trench coat with matching pants and a fedora. He can often be seen with a magnifying glass. Personality wise, he's extremely curious about many things and will hardly contain himself from engaging in scrutiny with others. He loves the thrill of solving a near unsolvable mystery, and will ask an almost endless supply of questions, should he be compelled. "Personal space" apparently doesn't exist to him, and "leaving well enough alone" is a sin and a high crime in his mind.

i'd like to think the reason queenie ended up abstracting was because she was so busy just keeping kinger safe. in chess, the king can still win without the queen, though with a lot more difficulty. but without a king, the entire game is lost. I imagine that if kinger were to abstract, then queenie would go with him. so im guessing queenie ended up doing as much as possible being kinger's sword and shield to keep the both of them safe, however was so dedicated to doing so that she slowly went insane, realizing that she couldnt do this forever, and abstracted, leaving kinger alone and hanging on by a thread. granted i think it's a bit of a stretch but it would be a very cool

Jaxx's inspiration is, I think, (far) less Poppy, but much more Max, the humorously sociopathic rabbit half of Sam & Max. He's got some bugs bunny in there too. Gangle is likely also partially inspired by Hexidecimal from Reboot, a CGI series from the time that the ADC tech seems to be from.

I think abstraction is a metaphor to committing suicide. I mean, think about it. If a person was driven to madness long enough, two things could happen. The person could either harm themselves or harm others. In this case, the abstracted characters harmed themselves (committed suicide). And when Kaughmo was sent to the cellar, they talked about him like he commited suicide. Thought I could point that out.

On the bowling ball scene. While a dick move. I think Jax was in some way protecting kinger and gengal. The abstracted kofmo was on the same floor as them and he only smacked them with it after hearing the monsters roar. While part of it was his usual malice. Notice that he also got them all off the top floor and away from the immediate danger. There's some good in him. It's just buried under tons of jackass

I think what makes Caine the wya he is is the fact that he's possibly incomplete character, he was never really finished which lead to him becoming this because his brain is literally filled with a bunch of blanks unlike the performers who while have no memory still function better as complete individuals

In most versions of the cain and abel story, cain actually ends abels life in his jealousy - Caine here being docile makes it hard for me to imagine any future story implications either lol (he doesn’t even seem rushed in the slightest so building towards a specific goal seems odd too - so far anyway)
