When Tom sings "I'm just glad to be here, happy to be alive", and when they sing "We're going to the end of the line" after Roy's verse, I can barely hold it together.

Yes, Roy passed before they made the video so they put his guitar in the rocking chair and a photo of him on the table. The first time I saw the video I literally burst into tears when I saw it.

@SalvoG Yes Roy had passed by the time the video was shot. There's ALSO a photo of him on the shelf if you look closely. It's a beautiful song but still always a tough listen because now there's three amazing musicians who are there but aren't with us anymore ya know? There is only one musician left out of The Traveling Wilburys, just Jeff Lynne. #NYGenXBIKERLady

SO did I, RobinT-treehugger. I LOVED Roy Orbison. I had tickets to see him in concert when I lived in Canada, and he died just before he was to do that concert. I was heartbroken that he passed, and that I missed an opportunity to see him perform live. Gone to soon. Beautiful, humble man. I thought it was so wonderful putting his guitar in the rocking chair, and his photo on that box, when his voice is heard.

The Traveling Wilburys is a rock supergroup from 1988, made up of Roy Orbison, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, & Jeff Lynne. Roy had passed away when this video was made & they did a nice tribute to him with the guitar in the rocking chair. They had a lot of great songs such as "Heading For The Light", "Inside Out", "Tweeter & The Monkey Man", "Dirty World", "Last Night", "She's My Baby", "Rattled", "Nobody's Child", "Congratulations" etc. Sadly only 2 guys are now left from this group (Bob Dylan & Jeff Lynne).

These guys were incredible!! Any song from them is excellent. You're correct about Roy and the guitar. there was also a few moments when they showed a photo of Roy in the room with them. Singing a song about the end of life and recording a vid with having one of your members/friends recently die must have been extremely emotional for them. At that time, there was probably close to 200 years of musical experience in the studio. It was a very exciting time to be around when it happened. For me, at least.

George in fact did write many songs during the last years with the Beatles but his quote in the group was only two songs per album, that's why his first solo album was a triple one, he wanted to record as many songs as he could, and that album is really colossal, great if you dig into it, the profound message on most of his songs makes you think in many things. About Roy when you said you listen but not see him, is because he just passed away before the video was recorded, that's why his guitar is in the rocking chair as he sings, that was a beautiful tribute from his bandmates and I always get chills when his part begins.

The amazing thing about this album is it revived the somewhat flagging careers of Tom, Bob, and Roy; cemented Jeff as the go-to producer and collaborator of the era; and proved that George was every bit the musical leader that Paul and John were.

I love this song (and "Handle Me With Care"). This song is made even more poignant with the passing of Roy Orbison (in 1988), Tom Petty (in 2017) & George Harrison (in 2001), all of whom have reached 'the end of the line'. Roy Orbison had passed by the time they filmed the video. Thanks for playing this & your comments.

Jeff Lynn is essentially The Beatles biggest fan. George Harrison was a huge Bob Dylan fan. And they are all Roy Orbison fans. Basically, the group is the ultimate mutual admiration society. And they all could put their egos aside and harmonize. Yes, George was under-recognized as a Beatle. Despite the fact that all members contributed significantly on many of The Beatles' songs, they were generally credited as Lennon-McCartney.
@patticrichton1135
@patticrichton1135 Жыл бұрын
But when George wrote the song, he was given credit for it, they didn't put "Lennon-McCartney" if it was a song that George had written.

Roy had a couple hits on the radio in the late 80's that got him back in the public eye. When the group fell together and recorded, they would all stand in awe as Roy recorded his parts, still at the top of his game. He got to see the success of their first hit, but passed away before they made the video for the second release.

You are correct in that assumption. R.O. had passed between the song's recording and the making of the video. Thoughtful touch of respect; his guitar in the moving rocking chair, his picture in a frame. Purple Haze was a Jimi Hendrix song that every garage band in America played. When Petty sang that maybe she'd think of him "down the road a ways - maybe when somebody plays Purple Haze.", i could see a young admirer at one of his early bandpractices. I'd be willing to bet that happened.

Roy took off after " Black x White Nights" after he had a gorgeous , Classic Roy(whose name escapes me) song that made High Top-10, then the Wilburys,then a Heart Attack. ...Off to Heaven, at the top, singing with Angels. Roy inspired every guy in that group. He was a Superstar they'd grown up with

There is a picture of Roy as well. George has always been, and will always be my fave Beatle. He was totally held back by Lennon/McCartney. He was usually only allowed one song per album until the later years when they could no longer suppress his talent. He was the youngest Beatle and was often treated like a kid by the others. Petty is a big hero of mine as well, his passing is still a huge shock to me. Love Dylan too. They were so good together as the Wilburys. RIP Roy, George and Tom.
@B.R.0101

I listen all the albums by George Harrison, except for the first one, but I don't think he was held back by Lennon/McCartney, I mean, Bob Dylan was in owe with Paul McCartney and he also said that anybody would struggled with the couple Lennon/McCartney, who wouldn't. If you see, both While My Guitar Gently Weeps and Something needed a bold kick to turn into an electric, complete and fantastic song, he wasn't so able to arrange songs as Lennon/McCartney were... The Beatles were perfect because anyone did what could do at its best...

His record collection (bolstered by an uncle who worked in radio) included the greatest artists of that decade so I grew up knowing Roy Orbison was one of the greatest voices history. Hey SalvoG, I thought I would suggest another song by TTW, if interested. *"Not Lone Anymore - Traveling Wilburys - Full Extended Video & Audio Version"* Roy Orbison wrote this song I suggested you listen too, and with the commercial success of the "Wilburys" and the recognition afforded Orbison following his death in December 1988; it marked his full return from the downturned direction his career had endured since the mid-1960's. I love his tenor vocals and I think this is one of his greatest works. I think you might enjoy it too.
