Tom Petty said that while they were recording the album, at Dave Stewart's house by the way, "we all kept walking around the house telling each other, We're in a band with Roy Freaking Orbison"

They all had pseudonyms, Roy was Lefty Wilburry, the drummer was Buster Sidebury aka Jim Keltner, George was Nelson, Jeff was Otis, Tom was Charlie T. Wilburry Jr, and Bob was Lucky

Here's what Dylan had to say about Orbison in his autobiography: “I was always fishing for something on the radio. Just like trains and bells, it was part of the soundtrack of my life. I moved the dial up and down and Roy Orbison's voice came blasting out of the small speakers. His new song, "Running Scared," exploded into the room. Orbison, though, transcended all the genres - folk, country, rock and roll or just about anything. His stuff mixed all the styles and some that hadn't even been invented yet. He could sound mean and nasty on one line and then sing in a falsetto voice like Frankie Valli in the next. With Roy, you didn't know if you were listening to mariachi or opera. He kept you on your toes. With him, it was all about fat and blood. He sounded like he was singing from an Olympian mountaintop and he meant business. One of his previous songs, "Ooby Dooby" was deceptively simple, but Roy had progressed. He was now singing his compositions in three or four octaves that made you want to drive your car over a cliff. He sang like a professional criminal. Typically, he'd start out in some low, barely audible range, stay there a while and then astonishingly slip into histrionics. His voice could jar a corpse, always leave you muttring to yourself something like, "Man, I don't believe it." His songs had songs within songs. They shifted from major to minor key without any logic. Orbison was deadly serious - no pollywog and no fledgling juvenile. There wasn't anything else on the radio like him.”

@@joleerinehardt2676 Roy didn't die before this was completed. The album, Volume 1, was released on 25 October 1988, and Handle with Care and the album were high in the charts when Roy passed on 6 December. Many of his last interviews had him expressing his joy at how well the Wilburys were being received.

The songwriting process for this one began with the boys sitting around a room with some boxes on the side and one had “Handle With Care” on it. I think it was George who thought maybe he could work with that. Guys like that could write a song about just about anything ! My favorite TW song is “End of the Line” with it’s fine official video. They had so much fun working together !

This album always brings happy tears to my eyes. My dad was a huge huge Roy Orbison fan. He was a child of the depression, so he was never a follower of the other four artists. It made me happy when he discovered the Traveling Wilburys through his love of Roy Orbison’s music. He then allowed himself to open up to Misters Dylan, Harrison, Petty, and Lynne. My dad died 24 years ago. I always think of him whenever I hear the Wilburys

Beautiful song. Right in the middle I was struck with a searing note of sadness, for the knowledge we've already lost 3 of these 5. These 5 literally represent the music of my life. Roy Orbison began making it big while I was a toddler, Harrison with the Beatles came across the Atlantic when I was 6, Bob Dylan is the poet of the sub-generation ahead of me, so all three of them have been around my whole life. Then, when I was in high school and the Beatles had broken up, Jeff Lynne and the Electric Light Orchestra burst onto the scene, and a few years later when I was managing a head shop/record store at age 19 this new album came out by a group called Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers that blew disco off the top of the album charts. Music of my life, man. Thanks again.

Roy and George go way back. I saw them on the same bill in 1963 in England. In those days there were things called package tours where a number of acts would play a short 20 minute to half hour set. Roy Orbison was headlining because he was the bigger star but halfway through the tour, 'Beatlemania' took off and they had to switch to the Beatles topping the bill. As far as I recall ( it was sixty years ago ! ) Roy was fine with that.

It should be noted, the song End Of The Line was recorded in the studio with Orbison, however the video wasn't recorded until after 'Lefty's' untimely passing. I'm sure that's what you meant, just wanted to clarify. Also: Nelson Wilbury (George Harrison) Otis Wilbury (Jeff Lynne) Lefty Wilbury (Roy Orbison) Charlie T. Wilbury, Jr. (Tom Petty) Lucky Wilbury (Bob Dylan) Greatest supergroup of all time, hands down!

The way Jeff Lynne tells it is that he and George Harrison had just had dinner at George's and were sitting around when George said 'we should start a group'. Jeff, thinking it was a bit of light hearted fun said OK who would you like to have in it, so they started throwing names around. To Jeff's astonishment the following day George said he had phoned them and they all said they were up for it. The Traveling Wilburys were born.

I saw either a documentary about making the album, or a behind-the-scenes video of these guys practicing and getting their harmonies right, etc. At one point they were trying to get Bob Dylan to sound like he used to. Jeff Lynne actually started to impersonate the "old" Dylan to try and show Bob how they wanted him to sound. It was funny.

I would indeed do the entire album - 10 songs, each member is featured on two of them. Highlights: End Of The Line (video was done after Roy's passing), You're Not Alone (Roy's song!!), Last Night (Tom's song), Tweeter & The Monkey Man (Dylan's song), Rattled (Jeff Lynne)...for starters - or just do the whole thing in order - Handle With Care was track 1. Was recognizing some of the voices but couldn't quite make sense out of hearing them together. I also started noticing that almost everyone around was nodding their heads and unconsciously bouncing a bit to the music. I went to ask one of the employees about it and he told me about The Traveling Wilburys and who the members were. I bought the album and was so excited to tell others about it. It made me so happy. First time watching your videos, and let me tell you that your reaction was pretty awesome, you recognized the greatness of these men immediately after each intervention, very good taste!!! Yes, the harmonies at the beginning are from Tom and Bob, then also Jeff gets in, and the drummer is Jim Keltner, another master on his own. Videos are only 7, this one, 'End of the Line' which I would vote to be next, 'Not alone anymore', 'Runaway', 'Inside Out', 'She's my baby' and 'Wilbury Twist', anyway the two albums are quite good and worth to listen.

This is a prime example of what can happen when superstars band together, set aside the egos, and focus on the music. In my opinion the greatest super group since Cream and CSNY. Early on in the life of my recording studio I was trying to produce a song by a local Christian singer-songwriter. There wasn't a lot of meat on the bone of the song but it was a perfect tune to plug in the same stop-hit that is used in this song. It was the mid 90's and I didn't think these folks had ever listened to the Wilburys. When I finished the mix and did the playback they loved it and said I was a genius. I said, "I know". No one ever heard the song again and I've always felt guilty about it.....sorta. Now I just tell people that all of the great music that's going to be written has already been written. I hope somebody finally proves me wrong.

Tom and Bob Dylan sing the chorus along the first time and then with Roy and the drummer pitching in softly.

You do need to listen to the whole album, they each are featured. But most of all, you have to listen to "End of the Line," like right away! Just trust me. I just watched the video again just now and am bawling.

It’s so fascinating to watch men’s reactions to Roy Orbison, it never fails. Roy pulls at the heartstrings of men like no other singer. Guys just melt into a puddle and it’s so beautiful. I love Dwight Yoakum’s description of Roy’s singing, “the cry of an angel falling backward out an open window.” Or Bruce Springsteen who said “shudder time.” The only other singer I can think of with that quality is female, Delores O’Riordan of the Cranberries.

I hope you have Bob Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone" on your list of essential songs. It is possibly the first song of modern rock. It's hard to draw lines and say "Oh, this is where it changed," but ... this is a likely spot to draw the line. That's when Bob switched from acoustic folk to electric rock.

When Roy Orbison heard about his friends coming together to record a bunch of songs under the Traveling Wilbury's name, he said I'd love to come and just watch. They recorded the songs at Bob Dylan's studio on his property, as it was a last minute thing and there were no other recording studios available. Knowing that Orbison would be in attendance, George wasn't going to let him get away without singing, and so he wrote the extra lyrics for Orbison on the 'Handle With Care'. After this, Orbison contributed to the entire album.
