Peasholm Park is the best park in North Yorkshire, confirmed by the Trip Advisor Traveller’s Choice Awards. But it’s perhaps best known by the 40+ generation for its legendary Tree Walk Wonderland and miniature Naval Warfare.
In this video, I take a wander around the park to show it how it is today, before taking a look at the “little boat show” and the lost Treewalk.
Whilst making the video, I put out requests for people’s old photos of the Treewalk, but unfortunately they seem to be few and far between. I hadn’t intended to include the Naval Warfare when I planned the video but, once I started editing, it seemed a natural thing to include.

I remember holidays with my parents in Scarborough and in particular night time visits to see The Tree Walk, as a seven year old it was just magic. With today's hi tech lighting, lasers and the like you could imagine what they could do with lighting effects if the Tree Walk was brought back and yes it would be a feather in Scarborough's cap as an added family attraction.

I loved doing the Tree Walk. It was always the last night of our holiday activity so it became very special to us. It was fun and became so magical as it became bigger and then improved. It was so sad that Scarborough stopped it as they have done with so many other things. It is not the same Scarborough anymore,

I worked on the boat deck in Peasholm the summer of 1953 and drove HMS Ajax in the naval warfare twice a week and again on Bank holidays. While much has changed in the park this wonderful video brought back many memories of my childhood in Scarborough.

I worked on the boat deck in Peasholm for three summers from 2005, which also included the envious task of driving a naval warfare boat three times a week. HMS Exeter was my toy! You don’t get many summer jobs better than that! As others have said, that’s another great video of the area with some really interesting information and as always, great use of the drone. 👍

The most magical place on earth. So many memories as a kid, like many others here. Both my older sisters ashes are scattered in the park, such were our memories of family holidays there in the 1960’s and ‘70’s xx

Thanks for a lovely trip down memory lane, Andrew. It has brought back happy childhood memories of the park and illuminations in the 1960s and I also recall a small orchestra playing in the bandstand on the lake, in the evening, which helped to make it seem a magical place to a child. We lived in Stoke-on-Trent and would stay in Scarborough during the week of York races, my father was a Bookmaker, stopping at the St Nicholas Hotel on St Nicholas cliff. I still have the postcards that my mother sent to my grandparents showing the area as it was back then with the Esplanade lined with, what are now, classic cars. Going off at a tangent - I can remember Max Jaffa broadcasting, from the Spa Theatre, on the 'wireless' on a Sunday afternoon which would always remind me of our holidays in Scarborough. Seems like a different world now ! But nice to see that Scarborough has retained many of the nice parts that make it special. Planning a couple of trips up to the area this year to explore some of the places featured in your interesting videos.

As a WW2 baby boomer, for our annual two week holiday, my parents, brother and I would walk from my grandmothers terraced house in Tindal St off Victoria Rd to Peasholm Park, first stop was the little boating pond, only about a foot deep, were I would push out my sail boat along with other children, before walking through the Japanese garden down to the lake, then at night walk around the island with its attractions all lit up. The Naval warfare we visited like all the other attractions every year until the mid sixties. As you say for a child in the fifties it was indeed magical as was so much in Scarborough. I was able to take my daughter twenty years ago so she could enjoy those same attractions. Last year in April for my 70th birthday, my daughter and I stayed at The Grand, a chance to reminisce and enjoy Scarborough. Cheers Andrew👍

In the 60's the Free Walk theme was taken from a puppet tv show called Four Feather Falls with illuminated Indians with hatchets jumping out from behind the trees. Also at the top was a small cafe where you could get "cowboy" food. Sadly missed now it's a pity my children cannot take their children to see the wonders they so fondly remember. Thanks for the video another walk back in time.

Briliant work as ever Andrew and the Tree Walk brings back fab memories of when I was a child visiting the town about a decade or so before I moved there aged 17. It was a hugely popular attraction, especially for children who were mesmorised by the beautifully illuminated animated displays and the sheer scale of it all. Why it ever closed is beyond comprehension. I no longerr live there but visit whenever I can to see friends and enjoy the beauty of the town. Thanks for this great nostalgia trip.

As another local I remember this place so well, magical is the only word I can use at it holds so many happy times here for me. I remember the wooden boxes with puppets on strings. They were so clever and done with so much care. I was lucky enough to bump into a lady not so long ago in the job that I do and we started talking about Scarborough and especially Peasholm Park. She told me her husband who has now passed use to be the one that made the puppets which were on strings which were housed in those magical boxes. It use to be a wonderful place. It still is to be fair even though the bird cages were taken down a few years ago, we as a family still go there weather permitting very frequently. Thanks for the wonderful trip down memory lane. Keep up the good work!

Awww a lovely nostalgia trip back to some very happy childhood holidays 🥰 Loved seeing that the Naval Battle is still going strong. Seeing that on holiday was extra special for me because my little sister hated the loud bangs so much she screamed the place down loud enough to be heard back home in Fife 😆 so it had to be a day when Dad took me to the Park and my Mum did something with my sister. Hope the Tree Walk comes back too that was magical. It was an absolutely perfect place to generate absolute wonder in little ones and I loved it.

I used to the love the flea circus too! Living in Australia now but so many fond memories of when my grandparents lived in Scarborough. We loved the North Pool, and the south pool, but it was freezing, the corner cafe where she would buy us waffles with strawberries and cream, and we loved the tree walk and naval battle. I don't think I'd like to visit again as it's all changed and my old memories are filled with fondness.

Well done for your hard work getting some information and photos of Tree Walk I have been scouring the internet for ages trying to get something. Your explanation of poor cameras and night time attraction makes complete sense thinking about it. All of your Scarbourough videos are amazing, well researched and presented. I was born in 1967 and spent every summer for my first 12 years staying with my grandparents up there so camr to love the place very much. Even though I have no family remaining up there we still come up for a long weekend every year wthout fail. Looking through the youtube videos that I have found that span from the 1930s until the present day you realise that nothing really changes much over the decades. Scarborough is still a place for families to be together and have fun!

Brought back so many great memories of the tree walk and the naval battle which were always highlights of our family holidays. Brought a tear to my eye. Such a shame its all gone. I seem to remember the lights used to continue up into the trees on Peasholm Rd and Columbus Ravine, with illuminated cowboys and indians(?). For some strange reason another fond memory is of the illuminated ponds/fountains in Valley Rd, opposite the Rotunda on the site of the former Aquarium.

Scarborough is so underrated. A proper old-fashioned resort with much of its Victorian splendour still intact, most of it just needs a lick of paint, oh and *much* better marketing. That said i like the fact that it hasn't been gentrified beyond all recognition yet, it means i still have half a chance of living there one day! Same can't be said for Torquay, where i spent a lot of my childhood and where even modest flats now regularly sell for £500k+. They also had illuminated gardens on the seafront which are much missed after the council cut all the trees down in the mid-2000s. Unlike in Torquay, there's still the opportunity to restore the Scarborough tree walk - with modern LED technology it could be something *really* special - and i for one would be there like a shot.

Hello Andrew, I moved from stockton to Scarborough in 1987 till 2006 and served my time as a electrician there , the company I worked for did a refurb on the lighting around the lake , the electricity supply from the food kiosk goes under the water and up to the pagoda at the top of the island that supplies the lights so I got the key to go inside and do the connects ( ps there's nothing in there , it's a empty shell ) but it was cool going inside , keep the vlogs coming .

Another very interesting vlog, as a young child in what must have been the early to mid 90's i remember going to Peasholm Park and watching the Naval Warfare and riding on the miniature railway and Kinderland, don't remember doing the light walk though, though it looks like it would of been great fun with all the lights. I then remember going back in what must have been about 15 years later to find Kinderland was all gone, i made me feel quite sad as i'm sure it would have been very popular today in fact a few things had changed at the North Bay including the loss of the cliff lift seemed that most things i had remembered from my childhood had disappeared. Great video really enjoy watching them, really want to walk the old railway line route from Whitby to Scarborough, so your vlog on that was FAB thanks

It was the idea of the engineer who designed the park, Harry Smith. I think I read somewhere years ago that it was after a visit to Japan, but don’t quote me on that! 🙂

I'm 69 years old now and remember walking round the tree walk at night and pity it is closed now. What is the music that is playing at about 4 mins. Thank you.

Cheers Alan. I would have liked to get more footage of the battle, mainly for a better angle. But it was a last minute decision to go with the family, so I wanted to sit with them & enjoy it as well as getting a few shots.

My grandmother used to tell us a story that an aunt of hers used to own part of the land Peasholm was built on. There was also some open common land and my grandma remembers going to see the Buffalo Bill and Annie Oakley cowboy show there when they came over for a European tour.

I certainly remember the tree walk and have tried to describe it to my children when we've visited Peasholme. For us as a family in the 1960's, the first Saturday night at Scarborough on our family holiday was when we'd visit the tree walk. Such happy memories. As you mention it I also remember happy times spent at the North Side Pool. The last time I was there though, was to use the changing facilities, it must've been in the early 00's, after running the Scarborough Fayre 10k road race. The post race presentation was in the Corner Cafe, another iconic North Bay landmark.

Ohh the nostalgia! Spent summer school holidays 1966 - 1973 with my Grandparents who lived up by the Cricket Ground. Peasholm came to be considered our back yard! Fond memories of sneaking in to watch the Naval Battle without paying: must have had an effect because I joined the RN in 73, transferring to the FAA in 1980. Also remember the brass band concerts on a Sunday, invariably by a colliery brass band from 't'other side' (of Yorkshire I presume they meant!); always immaculately dressed in their uniforms despite the occasional heatwaves. Oh and remember the rowing boats (named after flowers and shrubs if I recall) and the Red Indian style canoes you could hire for ½ an hour at a time. Good to see it is all still going in these modern times.

,As a local I used to go to the treewalk regularly (depending on the amount of pocket money I had) Illuminated creatures would climb and run through the trees it was a magical place. As an adult we took our children up there. The lights may have gone but it's still a wonderful, picturesque walk and at the moment I don't need any pocket money. Scarborough Council could make more of it, last went up there Halloween the colours and views were picturesque but if council had done a Halloween Trail it would have drawn a lot of people.
