My mates worked at butlins from late may till September in the 70s from 78/83 .They used to work at REDPATH DORMAN LONG MIDDLESBROUGH ,then jobs were plentiful these 6 lads were aged about 23 to 26 and were tradesman plater/welders so they could take time off to enjoy themselves ,they told me some tales what went on ,can't say on here .one of there saying was, have you got a girl in your chalet, no came the answer ,do you want one , I was there apprentice aged 18 , so I had to still work at at REDPATH DORM LONG , we were still on with building the famous HUMBER BRIDGE ,the same company that built SYDNEY HARBOUR BRIDGE , The best time of my life was visiting them working at BUTLINS ,never cost me anything ,free chalet, food ,nightlife ,most weekends I was there ,use to travel on my motorbike CB750 HONDA, on Friday after work ,then back home to the boro Sunday , YOUR local videos are very good ,enjoy very much

I’m wondering about John walker😊as I have northern family in North Yorkshire and Cleveland. I know we are somehow related to a walker that invented the matchstick and they were from guisborough, or near there. And our family samplers are made by a Elizabeth Proddom from Whitby .

Great video, thank you. I tell the story of Capt. Cook on my tours here on Maui. I would love to collaborate with you on a video here, where he met his demise in Kealakakua Bay on February 14th. 1779

It's criminal how the Tories closed down the railway in the 60s. Then they add insult to injury with HS2, something that nobody needs.

I was gob smacked to discover the park had closed, then followed by the water park. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot. Both were absolutely wonderful and a main attraction of Scarborough. Replacing with flats etc is a complete joke. Shame on Scarborough council

Like most things in my town, anything that the local council owned or ran are now closed, demolished, or car parks. The local authorities were masters of the 'Midas Touch' in reverse...

I was born in 1958 and visited Scarborough often as a child, as did my wife. We still visit often because we both love Scarborough and the cherished memories, old and new. I do remember the tree walk having Alice in Wonderland characters. Your wonderful video confirms that they may have been characters based upon that, but to me it was and still is purely magical. I'd LOVE to see it restored via crowd or National Lottery heritage funding. Thrilled that the Naval Warfare is still happening. I last saw a performance about five years ago.

This video explains so much. The underwater scenes decoration of the underground walk-ways through the roundabout at the side of Beachcomber café makes perfect sense now.

I remember the Tree Walk as a child on holiday back in the 70's. I am fortunate enough to to live here now, as of 3 years ago and walking around scarborough today it's amazing how much I remember which is no longer here. How many theatres have gone, the chair lift to Zoo and Marineland, (which became Mr. Marvels) and there used to be 4 Cliff Lifts, now only 2 survive.

Scarbourgh council seem to be still making dodgy decisions. Paying visitor camper vans on the sea front banned. Why don’t they use this eye saw land in a great position for the camper vans, charge money for an overnight pitch, make Scarborough a more upto date destination.

Absolutely fascinating story! I’ve always had a fondness for Scarborough. Our last trip was a short stay in the summer of 2009 with our two eldest grandchildren who were then age 8 and 5. We stayed in a lovely guest house with sea and castle views. Took a trip on the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway and spent several hours in Whitby. We all had fabulous time!

Lived in Scarborough for 13 years, knew the car park was there but none of the history of gala land but the opposite end on the north bay by the open air theatre has also lost major attractions, was a nice place at one time, south cliff gardens, Olivers mount the only mainland motorcycle road race track and lots of other things around the area.

The reason Hitler wanted it when he got to the UK was not because he "saw anything in it" It was a question of SIZE...which meant STATUS. The Colosseum in Rome.Same thing. Status. A reflection and demonstration of POWER. Nothing to do with the paint work or bedroom towels or the sand in the arena. Status. Power. Empire State in the US. That massive hotel in Dubai. Same thing. Status and Power. 😮😮😮😮Thanks for a great video. 😅😅😅

Another interesting video which I really appreciated because I have often wondered about The Grand Hotel and its history. Though the original builders built it well, over a hundred and fifty years have passed by and one wonders if the building really can have a profitable and enduring future.

Thanks North Yorkshire Wanderer. I enjoyed this video. In the early sixties, as a child, I won a family day ticket to Butlins at Filey - then in 1975 when I was a university student, I spent most of that summer working there. You can find some Butlins memorabilia in the little town museum in Filey. It is almost as if the camp was wiped off the face of the earth.

In the 70's I volunteered on the NYMR and travelled from London regularly with some friends. One of them had a Morris Minor, and one day we explored some of the Whitby to Scarborough line. At Ravenscar Paul drove the Minor, with me and another friend up onto the trackbed and drove north right into the Ravenscar tunnel. We could not get right through and reversed out!

I remember exploring around the viaduct in the mid 1970's and seeing a big cast iron sign near the Hawsker end dating from North Eastern Railway days, and threatening a fine for trespassing on the railway, in the name of a Mr Wilkinson, who was, I think, NER company secretary.

Thanks for clarifying the story of Dracula and Whitby; that Dracula was a fictional character in Bram Stokers’s novel and based on European myth and history. There may be truth in its real history but it is only fictional with regard to Whitby.

I visited this aged 8 or 9 in the mid 1980s. Straight after disembarking on treasure island I found a food coin that wasn’t properly buried. We’d not been told we could start hunting though and the pirate in charge told me off and made me cry
