The worst ones were the Ferengi teeth in star trek DS9. All the poor actors had these huge fake Ferengi teeth in their mouth and they had to try and articulate regardless. It took them literally 7 seasons to learn how to speak clearly with those fake teeth in, and by then the show was over lol. It took Worf, the klingon in starfleet, a whole TWO different star trek TV shows to learn how to articulate properly with his fake klingon teeth in, cos he was in all of star trek TNG and then was a main character in DS9 after that. I always thought damn, these are relatively very big budget TV shows and they can't make proper teeth for their main characters, let alone side characters who rarely appear. These were the main characters in an ensemble cast. I gotta respect them for doing as well as they did despite the bad fake teeth

Historically the unions that were supported by our government were racist and supported gun control and gerrymandering. Joining a union in America is like joining a cult, complete with bumper stickers and political ideology. And none of them actually try to unionize a wider labor market, it’s all like local trade unions that cost more than an average laborer, because they pay people to stand around because the young people do all the work and the old dudes that should be in an more intellectual position are stuck on the job because (capitalist labor market). LM D what about food, most snacks are owned by 5 companies
@Timbo50005 жыл бұрын
Not even 3 companies, but most popular music is written by 3 _people_ who cover pretty much all the pop singers. Capitalism is all well and good when it promotes innovation and higher quality, but there is this point where it starts to spiral out of control. There is this point where companies have done the whole quality thing and are looking for even more profitable ways of selling their products. And that is where in the case of music we enter the realm of tunes that are not artistically created, but purposefully designed to be psychologically catchy. What a large part of the music industry does nowadays is simply create tunes that follow a certain recipe of catchiness and create a slightly different version of it for a new hit every time. We are now in the age where quality and profit no longer correlate. We're in the age of mass consumerism, wherein max profit is attained by making your washing machines break after a year or 5 instead of building them to last, wherein max profit is attained by creating a fashion trend each season and producing clothing in bulk to fit the fashion for short term wear instead of producing high quality sustainable clothing to fit a certain _style_ for longer time wear. It's a sad time we live in and video games are on the brink of entering into that next stage too now. We already had to deal with this yearly subscription for online multiplayer (because of this I only play single player games nowadays), but streaming services are truly going to be the killing blow.

I still feel like we don't touch on the worst aspect of live service games enough, which is that they're usually run on servers controlled by the publisher that will render the game unplayable when they shut down, despite many of these games being sold as goods, which essentially makes this fraud in most countries.

That is the point of any monthly service though so it goes without saying. If your water or ISP goes out of business, you lose access too. I get the frustration though. Back in my day CS 1.6, WC3, Starcraft and most other online games could be played online completely independent of any company shutting down. It wasnt until game companies started controlling their servers that the very concept of "toxicity" was born. Porn and Gore sprays on CS 1.6. Porn maps on WC3. Racism, Sexism etc was all up to the players discretions and the only bannable offense was blatant hacking. Those were the days...
@DeepDiveDevin5 жыл бұрын
@@Carltoncurtis1 There's a couple things wrong with this, but the main thing you're missing is that these games are being sold _as goods,_ no subscription at all. Them shutting down the servers and rendering these games unplayable is essentially destroying a product they no longer own.
@AtomicSource115 жыл бұрын
Yeah weird huh? Except (standalone) games as we buy them today have this weird duality of being a good AND a service at the same time. In order to play the game, you need to agree to a EULA which gives you a *licence* to play the game, which can be revoked at any time by the publisher. We also buy a delivery method (might be a physical disc, or access to a service to download it). Most of what we pay for when buying a game is the IP. IP is honestly the weirdest category of 'good'. Like, if you've bought a game disc, you've bought one of the strangest commodities in existence.
@DeepDiveDevin5 жыл бұрын
@@AtomicSource11 It actually _cannot_ be revoked by the publisher. When you purchase a game as a good you purchase it under a _perpetual_ license. That means you are entitled to a working product, or some reasonable chance of making it work again. You don't own any part of the IP when you buy games. You're buying a copy of that IP's image which you can do anything you want with. If you fully pay for it, it is YOUR COPY. Shutting down a server that is REQUIRED to play it is effectively destroying that copy. EULAs aren't going to do _shit_ for that. If you pay for a new car up front, some fine print on the paperwork saying the company can steal the engine in the middle of the night and sell it back to you isn't going to help them in court. Because they're intentionally destroying something YOU OWN, they aren't entitled to control over it anymore. There's nothing "service-y" about any game that doesn't have a subscription fee. If you _buy_ a game, a "license to play a game", or whatever, it's a good. You are legally entitled to be able to use that product until it either wears out on it's own (see: newer OS versions not running certain games) or you choose to be done with it. This "you only own a license they can do what they want" is just the industry narrative talking, because they can profit off of murdering games and then selling the same shit in a new package because certain players have nowhere else to go for that specific type of game.

Depends on reinforcement/punishment type, potential motivation, how far "shaped" a behavior is in the organism's current state, what specific reinforcement (psychopharmacology, like sugar vs nicotine for example... Which is an entirely HUGE part of behavioral shaping) you're utilizing, the complexity of the new behavior you're trying to shape into an organism's future behavior or "habit"... The downside of actual market competition is that companies will waste revenue hiding trade secrets from each other and trying to sabotage one another. We also get formatting and platform wars (e.g. Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD in mid-2000s, Mac vs. PC, or any significant console war such as Nintendo vs. Sega in the 1990s). Oligopolies (i.e. significantly concentrated markets with a few dominant firms, rather than one) often result in the worst of both "perfect competition" and a true monopoly; companies willing to stab each other in the back and waste valuable resources vying for the #1 spot can just as easily form trust-like agreements to keep prices up and wages down or cooperate to lobby governments on behalf of their whole industry.
@gur2625 жыл бұрын
A good example of that actually happening is Sony getting into the camera market. It does look a lot like manufacturers were going up a megapixel or 2each year till Sony decided to go in and do36. It has slowed down, they are just a company too and don't want to just throw everything into one model either as they now secured a place in the market for themselves, but it sure did accelerate innovation and gave us more features throughout the industry. Did things get cheaper... Eh. Not really. That is where sigma n Co come in though. Then again firmware updates are more common now and when your lens suck some companies expect you to buy an extra dock to update it.... Cancer is growth too and there is no growth without some shitty side effects.

@@CGoody564 Very well put, indeed. I sapose that's a logical leap I made on my own at a later date. The goal is to monopolize, then what? YOU WIN. All the pieces go back in the box, and hopefully all the friendships are still intact. IRL is a much darker tale when one "wins."

How am I over a year late to this video. Never seen the modern western world put into such a succint sentence before. "If you work a job you hate to make money for someone who's job is owning stuff, are you really free?"

The way companies always say "we're a big family :))) " reminds me of the book "The White Tiger" by Aravind Adiga; an incredibly poor man works for a rich family, who likes to put on the airs that they dearly care about their employees, when it's obviously a delusion of the wealthy, and they never put their money where their mouth is. At the end of the book, when he gets his own business, while he pays his employees good wages and is polite to them, he NEVER condescends by saying that he, as their boss, is their friend. They don't voluntarily spend time with him, he makes it clear that they're just linked by business. That blunt honesty is rather refreshing compared to the bullshit many bosses and CEOs spew about how familial and community-oriented their businesses are, while keeping hundreds of workers stuck at minimum wage with no benefits.
@michaelhird4323 жыл бұрын
I had to read The White tiger for school, I have a lot to say about it. something I find incredibly interesting about balram is he's clearly a terrible person; he's sexist, egotistical, and he's still a capitalist (i.e. a wealth hoarder). However, he has respect for his employees and takes responsibility far more than anyone he ever worked for. Another thing I found interesting is how the mother of the person his employee killed doesn't want the money. She kind of sees through his bullshit - he's only taking responsibility because he knows nothing bad will happen as a result. Balram is really slippery like that; he's extremely good at pretending to be upstanding, but underneath he still spouts bullshit like the mongoose did.

This is a fixed position in the 3rd world state of Vermont. Where wealthy NJ fucks buy cute "farms" and convince ppl to work for min wage for (literally)30yrs because "they're family!". Yet they charge rent for employee housing where they refuse to fix the water for 3yrs- so employees are paying rent (taken directly out of pay with no record of course) for a place they can't shit n shower in. "But they're free to leave!" *someone yells from the back* Yes. But with no vehicle and being noticeably inbred/colored/foreign/ female....different- it's inevitable the scarcity of viable employment that lead them there will lead them back or leave them suffering. That "family" shit drives me up a wall.

I know right? I felt like there was supposed to be a lot more to this video than there was. Maybe it's because the last sixth of the video isn't really 'content?' Like, it feels like he didn't quite get to the part where he ties it all together into a strong conclusion. He mentioned some things about the free market, started to point out how this works in the video game industry, and then . . . that was it?

@@draxiss1577 This video misses on the necessary depth and research to take on the subject matter directly, which was always going to be the case given that doing so would probably mean being someone more like, e.g., myself, who doesn't just watch Jim Sterling, but is also an insider and actively looks for journalistic and historical projects such as Critical Distance, Don't Die, or Digital Antiquarian that operate at some remove from the commercial influences of the industry. What we got instead is a decent starting point for applying dialectical materialism to the industry, which is on point but necessarily a bit unsatisfying - "yes, we have a conflict here," but articulating specific criticisms and alternative philosophies is something for the experts.

As the other commenter says, those with good/expensive prosthetics (especially if they have no real teeth) don't have any lisp. This lisp is because it's over his real teeth and thus larger because of it. IRL vampires wouldn't have a lisp.
