I've been through SO MUCH CBT in my life 😂 I never realized it was based on stoicism! I've found it very helpful as someone who grew up with one NPD parent and one BPD parent. I never learned how to emotionally regulate as a kid, and I have very bad anxiety because of it. CBT helped me step back and separate my emotions from reality. It's a characteristic of NPD and BPD that the person's emotions create their sense of reality (ex: You didn't reply to my text message quickly, so you must hate me), and growing up with parents who do not behave according to reality warps your own sense of it. I had to learn that while my feelings are valid and deserve space, they may not be rooted in reality (ex: You didn't reply to my text message quickly--but it's because you were busy with your own life and responsibilities, not because you hate me). Some realities are harder to accept (My parents are either unwilling or unable to stop being abusive.) but once I did, I was able to take control of my own life (I don't have to be around people who are abusive, even if they are my parents. It isn't my responsibility to save them, and they do not want to be saved. It is kinder to walk away and let them be who they are rather than trying to change them). But you're right about systems--systems are in place because we all agree they're in place, even though we can feel powerless at times. It's hard to balance knowing that you, as an individual, aren't responsible for overthrowing our oppressive economic system, with the knowledge that you ARE responsible for fighting against it in any way you can. Balancing passion and logic, the fight for social justice and caring for yourself as a human deserving of compassion, is the difficulty of being human, I guess. Im sure it must be better than 20 years ago. My friends never got to attend the GRC in kess than 2 years and routinely paid for many of the procedures and drugs themselves while waiting, in order to keep the ball rolling. Psychological assessment was a requirement and set number of visits were necessary. Those appointments were almost always paid out of pocket by my friends. The length of time to get GRS was so long that most just went to Thailand and again paid for it themselves. Then of course, theres the huge fight on returning home to get recognition as a woman!
