@christopherrowe78602 жыл бұрын
The Norfolk Southern-Gregson Street Overpass has been given the nickname the "Can Opener" for that reason, its a real thing and yes so many trucks attempt it every year. The effect happens from the steel plate that was placed to sheild the railroad bridge from potential damage from all the trucks. Much of it is on the truckers for sure, but there really is a lack of alternative paths for truckers, especially when given that the road is a one way.

It's high enough for a lot of the trucks, that one at the end was just an outlier. There are still some Budget/Penske trucks that get some metal shavings off of the roof but leaving the roof intact, and a couple of them do still get their cans opened, but raising the bridge to 12'4" did make a significant improvement to the bridge problem.

The bridge being raised had nothing to do with the crashes. The company that owns the bridge just wanted to level out the train track so that their trains could go faster. Most semis are 13'6". Just know how tall you are, ez. I had a delivery in the Bronx once, made a wrong turn leaving and wound up with a low bridge in front of me, a one way going towards me on my left, a totally blocked one way on my right, and a busy intersection behind. It sucks, but you gotta just sit there blocking traffic with your 4-ways on and call the cops to help back you up. It's easy to prevent by planning your route and only a little annoying if you find yourself in that situation. All you have to do is not hit the bridge.

During my cdl training, I was taught to read and say the height of every bridge I went under. Reinforced the habit of looking at bridges before going underneath them. I still do it 4 years later, although I don’t say it out loud any more. A bridge is never going to jump out in front of you, as long as you’re paying attention. If you’re unsure, and don’t have a measuring tape with you, just don’t try it. Easy peasy.

@@waldo2635 While there *are* (anything lower than 16ft 6in has to be marked, IDK if there's a solid min from a quick google), this bridge is special because this bridge was built before any semblance of standards. Because of this, the city put sewer lines underneath the bridge, leaving little to no room for it to be lowered, and a train track on the bridge, which can't easily be moved without adjusting the *entire track* and all bridges (trains don't like slopes). (Fun Fact: The only reason it was raised is to help with another train crossing, which just so happened to have a positive benefit). src: 11ft8's website

Any thoughts on this issue? How can it be that there isn't some kind of standard or regulation but bridge builders and/or truck builders can follow so that this doesn't happen. Obviously there is already some stupidity at play with the drivers ignoring the sign which tells the height...
@salty_3k506 Жыл бұрын
@@AlecAndersonZxi think bridges used to be lower than today. and now they don't wanna raise it because of so few accidents and there are probably pipes under the bridge and raising the rails seems like a lot of work but all in all, it's just my guess that the trucks are cheaper for the city than changing the bridge.

"The Norfolk Southern-Gregson Street Overpass (commonly known as the 11-foot-8 Bridge or 11-foot-8+8 Bridge post-raising and nicknamed The Can Opener or The Gregson Street Guillotine) is a railroad bridge in Durham, North Carolina, United States, which was designed in the 1920s and built in 1940. The 81-year-old bridge allows passenger and freight trains to cross over South Gregson Street in downtown Durham. The bridge was built with a clearance for vehicles of 11 feet 8 inches (3.56 m). This was a standard height at the time it opened. The standard clearance, since 1973, has a minimum height of 14 feet (4.27 m), which is 2 feet 4 inches (0.71 m) higher than the bridge as built." Glad to know I live in the same state as this accursed bridge

So glad this is in my home state, a mere 30 minutes away! Really need to go out there for a weekend and watch and listen to the casual destruction of trucks by inobservant drivers.

@@cactusjackNV lots of them are just average people who rented trucks and moving, so they don't know the area. Navigation aps don't really warn about stuff like this all the time, especially if you're moving across the country, or are from a place that doesn't even have overpass bridges like this.

@@Bargadiel It's been going on for so long, I wonder if Penske make a profit from it? I assume they don't warn people hiring their trucks. So many Penske trucks get torn open. And perhaps peeling the top off totals the whole vehicle? So they overcharge the customer or their insurer?

I love how they set that massive I beam up on a braced foundation to cleanly peel the tops of the trucks off at 12' 4"

Which would you prefer? Peel the truck roof, or smash the bridge off it's supports? It probably wouldn't move the bridge much, but enough to need a lot more repair than the truck cost, even if it wrote it off.

Here we have railroad bridges there the fast trains comes at 180 km/h OR more ! Those bridges is really concrete tubs with the continuously welded rail with it's concrete sleepers in normal granite balast so the bridge is heavy enough to not really move though after a truck hitting it, the bridge must be verified to be in correct shape.

Hey at least it looks satisfying as fuck to watch them get peeled off like a tuna can.

I love how they raised the bridge to 12’4” and trucks STILL find a way to get taller and destroyed

I have a 2020 GMC 3500 4x4 dually pickup with a large truck camper. I measured the highest point on the camper when loaded on the truck and it was 13’4”. I have that height posted on my dash to remind me to not drive under anything less than 13’6”. I’ve had to turn around a couple of times but I still don’t have any damage…..Guess I won’t be driving to NC anytime soon. Cheers
