It was great to get my paws on Rafays bike to go over it and hopefully help him to get many happy miles out of it over the next few years!

I always appreciate my mechanic, and just accept the costs as part of life. I have patience for many things....working on my vehicles is not on the list. Even if I had the patience, I lack the space for the tools and such required to do much more than oil changes and the small, stupid easy stuff. Rather than deal with the aggravation and time of crawling around on the ground to get to everything, I'll still usually take it to the guy with a lift and tool sets and pay the labor just to get it done right and fast. I'll make exceptions for some side of the road riggings and stuff that only takes me a few minutes. Just bought another Victory Crossroads on Marketplace to answer Rafay's Outtro Crew question. P.S. - Adjusting my shift lever is actually one of the things I'll do (and have done). Even had the angled wrench handy in the tool bag to make it easier. You just decided you were willing to crawl on the ground that day; and who am I to deny you that experience? 😁

You have recently found a good one also which counts for a hell of a lot. Haha I think I've probably converted Rafay to being more on the Hatter side of things also, and that's also why I tried to point out the tools, time and learning aspects. I should have mentioned space also. There really are a lot of extra bits that make investing in doing everything yourself not worth it unless you're going to do it a lot. And it is a beauty :) Hahaha to be fair you did also say you could do it multiple times :P But it is the least I could do for Mr Hatter yano.

In your opinion, at 38k miles, were the valves ever looked at before? Overall for me I still like a low mileage used bike. Gets you low, or no engine wear, most things still fresh, not abused if they can't wrench correctly. Of course ALL fluids will be changed. Tires are one thing which can get you. Might still be original.

I don't think so, certainly looked like the stock application of RTV etc, literally identical to how my bike looked for instance. Should be done at 15kish miles and then they're generally good, so he may never need to adjust them again. I wouldn't ever turn my nose up at a low mileage bike, especially if it's been inside, I was more pointing out you'll still have a lot of the same issues, with the risk of less happy bores etc if there's any rust or whatever. Either way you have time and money to spend eh :) The nice thing about low mileage bikes as you say is generally they're unmolested, which counts for a lot.

Yea I forgot to mention it here but I got lucky that the previous owner just put new tires before I bought it or I would've had more to buy.

Strangely there are very few bikes on FB here. Best starting place is OLX. An interesting demonstration of practical economics. In many ways I think it is the time factor that makes me use a shop. If I have the time I prefer to tackle things myself. I hope this video does make more people look at the second hand market afresh. A good video. Thank you both. 👍

I think it's very much regional, Ireland was much more donedeal than anything else. Yeah I completely understand the time thing, I mean I'd love to have the Valkyrie done but there's just not enough hours in the day. Me too!! There's great value there once you're realistic with the final price of getting a bike sorted properly, be that money or money + time.

The DL1000 is a great bike. I had one when I started to ride. Slightly to small for me at 6'8", but a lovely bike. I even had a PowerCommander on it.

It is! Yeah the older model seems less kind to us tall folk, I'm 6'7 with the tall seat on the 2015 and am very comfortable on it! I'm still thinking of doing the PC6 as well.

I would love to see a big maintenance video for the z900rs. Are you going to check valve clearances based on the US or Euro spec? I've never done a valve service on a shim bike so there's a little bit of a curve for me on the Z.
@TheGorillaBiker
@TheGorillaBiker 3 сағат бұрын
I will be doing the valves over winter and recording it :) USish spec, I'm already over, which doesn't concern me as I would leave it until the euro spec - but I've tracked it so am just going to check them to be safe. It's easier on the Vstrom as it's a gear to gear cam, with the driving gear being chain driven. Getting there is a pain but actually popping them in and out is easy. It's not bad tho!!
