These bikes run very lean on part throttle. A modification I used to do a lot of was to increase the main jet to the next bigger size and the air corrector jets , smaller brass ones , I think from 25 to 40 , but it has been 39 years since my last modjob. The difference in everyday riding is like an extra 100cc worth of torque . This trick works on all Honda s that use these carburetors.

It is running rich, but the mixture screws only affect idle mixture and very small throttle openings. Mixture at wider throttle is controlled by the slide needle. Check that the slide pistons move freely and smoothly in the carb caps. They may be sticking slightly. Check that the choke plates are fully open when choke is off. Re-check the float heights. I'm not sure if there is a circlip on the slide needles on these Keihin carbs, but if there is, try raising the circlip one notch which will lower the needle slightly, weakening the mixture at higher throttle positions. Also check that carb jets are correct. Oh, and also, don't squirt WD40 or oil into the tacho drive. The tacho needs stripping and cleaning with a minute amount of lube, preferably dry graphite like that used for locks.

Great to see love for the Superdream. Is a surprisingly capable two up bike. We went everywhere on mine. A couple of helpers if I may. The ticking at idle is a loose cam chain. The auto adjusters never work. Loosen the locknut, remove the tank and rocker cover. At the rear of the cam ham valley the top of the tensioner is visible. With a small rod or screwdriver rest it on the tensioner and with the palm of you hand whack it down. Tighten the locknut and that should be good. The other is the Tacho being sluggish. That is dirt. Strp the mechanism out, clean and you'll be good to go. Love it, makes me miss mine.

Lovely rebuild job. However i had one and found it dull but reliable, balance chain wore out twice and needed one cam chain. If you put a after market exhaust on it it goes even slower. You can lever the chain tension then lock it off when they get a bit worn. Mine used to do 40 mpg which is bad when you consider the CX 500 did 50 mpg.

The plugs are black indicating that it'd running a bit ritch. The two turns out on each carb are only a base setting. You need to then adjust it accordingly until it's running correct by first heating up the bike and then screwing out the air screw until you hear yhe bike respond in a negative way, then screw the air screw in until it responds in a negative way and screw it back out somewhere in-between those two negative spots is the sweet spot. Do that for both caurberators then take it for a good spin (have your spark plug wrench ready waiting) when you get back, immediately take the spark plugs out. ( this is called a plug chop) a bike that's running hood should make the plugs a biscuit brown colour. Other things you can check is your ignition coils. If you didn't change them they can go eith age and the bike can act perfect when cool enough , but when it heats up it will start to intermittently spit n mess around and not give you the full power (acting like it's starved of fuel) I had a bike do that on me and it took me months to figure it out for myself the hard way. Sometimes they can test fine but still be on the way out so it's best to replace them anyway to rule it out.

The CM400 series of that bike had a slow failing CDI unit. It was only evident on highway speeds and felt like poor acceleration. The capacitors would fail slowly. A replacement fixed everything. Rexs Speedshop in the UK sells a replacement for the Superdream 250. I bet that's your issue.

Mine would only ever reach 60mph under very favourable conditions, and wouldn't have stood a chance of that two-up. You did a grand job with the restoration. Other than the one or two remaining glitches it's practically brand new again!

I owned a new Super Dream back in 1978 (this colour), it seems to be running a bit rich but if you’ve set the air screw correctly etc., so maybe check the internals of the carbs, sliding freely as others have said. Assume you’ve checked the clearances for the tappets on this one if I remember correctly it’s a 6 valve head that might be causing some noise if they’re out, no shims required it’s just a feeler gauge and lock nuts easy peazy. People always slagged off the Superdream, but if you wind them up you can make good progress, I would see a registered 90 mph on a slight incline flat on the tank, and they really handled well …… You’ve done a great job restoring the Superdream thumbs up to you👍👍.

Have you checked the tension on the crankshaft balancer chain ? If it's slack you can move the arm one notch on the spline to get the chain back into tolerance. It's just a clutch cover off to adjust . Hard to tell from video audio but the motor does sound a bit noisy for a super dream . They are normally super quiet engines even under load , revs . Nice rebuild by the way 👌

You’re done a lovely job restoring that Superdream. It really takes me back as I bought a Superdream in 1981 when I started an apprenticeship and needed transport for the 90 mile round trip, riding through the worst winter I can remember 😂. It wasn’t the most highly rated 250 at the time as it is comparatively large and heavy but it suited my 6’2” frame. It coped very well with pillions, even taking myself and my girlfriend (now wife) on a camping holiday. I currently ride a Blackbird so it’s funny to look back and think all that was done with just 27hp! I expect it is just your mic is picking up rather a lot of mechanical noise as you, being on the bike, would know if it actually made such a clatter. The sooty plugs definitely indicate it is running rich.

You could have moisture in the carburetors which collects under the main jets and gets sucked up as the fuel flow increases enough to lift the heavier water? But I would suspect some or all of the electrics from the CDI to the coils via plug leads and caps for being the reason it was abandoned in 1986. The learner 125cc limit was introduced in 1983 so a 250 Superdream wouldn't have been worth fixing after then.

Have you re-checked the valve lash since you rebuilt it? I’m not familiar with this particular model but it does sound very “ticky” that is consistent with the revs going up and down. I saw you adjust the cam chain but sometimes the factory oem spring loaded tensioners, esp when old, don’t always do their designed job very well due to springs softening and or mechanisms wearing/gumming up! With the valve cover off and possibly even with the carbs removed if they obscure your view of the chain and/or access to the adjuster, get the engine between two valves opening/closing (where if you turn the engine over with a ratchet and go back and forth a tiny bit in either direction your going against a valve spring)…while you go back and forth just a tiny bit feel and watch for backlash in the chain and the rear cam chain guide flexing. This IMHO is the best point to adjust the chain. Holding the ratchet in the forward position, load the chain forward to put slack in the rear run of the chain while simultaneously adjust the tensioner out (make it ratchet or whatever style it is). I build dragbikes and use manual adjusters (aftermarket) but you can make the stock adjust pop out however they are designed to work! Good luck with it.

Just a thought; check your float bowls. Quite often when someone is getting ready for a ride they wash the bike with a hose (especially a high pressure hose) and water gets in the bottom of the float bowl. The bike will work fine until approx. 50mph and then when it needs more fuel it starts sucking up water and of course the motor then starts losing power.

Further geeking info regarding my post on the richer jets for the carburetor air corrector. In 1978 the press demonstration Honda 250 dream was in the PitStop workshop and I rode it and a punters one back to back and there was a big difference. I stripped the rocker off the demo bike and the customer bike and found same cam timing and compression ratio. Demo bike inlet ports were hand finished but not really "gas flowed" but the carb jetting was different so I swapped the carbs over between the bikes and the performance difference swapped over also. We gave the demo bike back with the swapped carbs on it back to Honda and didn't tell them . Punters was delighted , and I did the jet swap on several dreams and dozens of super dreams both 250 and 400 , also one cx 500 v twin .

You have done an a brilliant job on this 250N .Had several when they could be bought for a couple of hundred quid especially when the new learner limit came in 1983 for restriction to 125cc.As had been said , degrading performance after getting thoroughly warmed up , may be indicating failing plug caps or the CDI unit .There are also ' fake ' spark plugs being sold on-line that cause these issues .The cam chain is certainly slack through a stuck tensioner blade.

Good to know! I am going to come back to the cam chain on the next upload and hopefully cross every adjustment possible off the list to be sure

Cracking series well done. Just laugh at the haters and don’t take any notice of advice from people who are not where you want to be. Take pride in what you have done and keep the content coming. Blackbird, thunderace, cb250. What’s next 😂 Well done 👍

Well done, Rye! Yes, it does sound a bit rattly, but then again so do many 40 year old bikes! I'm sure it will carry on happily for quite a few thousand miles with no issues..... As far as the lack of power goes, it may be that the ignition isn't advancing - this happened on a bike I had once. The advance was controlled by a wire from the alternator to the CDI box, so presumably the CDI used the alternator output to judge the engine speed? Anyway, this wire had a connector which had all but rusted through. Ran a new wire and bingo, the bike ran cleanly all the way to the red line again! Worth a look and a puzzle over the wiring diagram?

Do you need a petrol additive as the bike probaby was designed to run on unleaded petrol??

Great video, thanks for sharing ! I remember the day of riding little 1980's bikes, and this looks great.

Air cooled bikes often sound bad on video, I think the mechanical sounds resonate through the cooling fins which are picked up by the mic. Just a theory. Also, I think the cam chain tensioner is meant to be set when it's off and the pistons are at a particular setting, or else you're just pushing it out and locking it in loose again👌

I am with Bikesure and they categorically told me they do not insure for pillions, great job with the Superdream though. I once had similar problem with my DT 125 from same era, fuel starvation, I found a big ball of belly button fluff in the carb bowl, I suspect some alleged friend had deposited it in my fuel tank. What I used to love about the 1981 Superdreams was that I could easily pass them on my 1981 DT 125 MX🙃🙃

Hmm .. not so sure, slightly off subject, but I had the 250's baby brother, the CB 125 tb and I remember giving my mate a race on the old A2 and I managed to beat him, he was on his RD125 . The CB 125 had a 12000 rpm red line. I was forever replacing the points on it.

I remember one guy was helping me out with some carbs, saw a hole in a diaphragm , smeared some Hylomar on it, decent bodge till I ran over to Bartons of Bath to order a new set...all three of my Super Dreams ran with barely a fault, the 400N was nice though...
