In this Our Changing Climate environmental video essay, I look at the environmental and social cost of the military and militarism. I narrow in on the United States military-industrial complex because it is by far the biggest military machine in the world. I look at how the military and the military-industrial complex is a massive polluter in terms of both emissions and chemical waste. In addition, the video looks at whether or not these environmental and monetary burdens caused by the military-industrial complex are justified. Have the multitude of wars the United States has wage been just, or are they manifestations of imperialism. Ultimately, the video connects environmental destruction with military imperialism and concludes that demilitarization is the only truly effective answer to the carbon footprint of the military.

What are your thoughts on the relationship between militarism and the environment? Do you think "greening" the military is a solution? Note: I failed to adequately explore the single biggest cost of the military-industrial complex: the loss of human lives. Watching the piece again, I wish I had done a better job of weaving the ramifications of violence into this video.

I work on a military base as an environmental engineer. I find it ironic that my job is to protect the base from getting fined by environmental inspectors and trying to comply to federal laws, but it's OK for us to continue this trajectory of wasteful spending and environmental "protection" of other countries? as an army veteran, this was tough to watch. i'm sure it was tough to research and make. you're a good man. if you took a deeper look into the military's impact, you'd f*cking cry. you'd have to make a 3 hour movie. food waste, water waste, plastic pollution, depleted uranium, the list goes on. but, if it makes you feel any better, the biggest threat to the military is... the military. i was a combat medic and i've seen it all. obesity, substance abuse, mental illness, sexual abuse, straight-up poverty, the list goes on. the service members who put themselves on the line are getting royally screwed. nobody talks about it because nobody else will listen. it's like climate change: ignorance is bliss. the pentagon is completely baffled because there is no solution. this country will demilitarize itself, other countries will follow or burn... or army robots will take over and kill everyone. circle of life, son.

@@nwsportstilidie Well, I have no idea! But, the problem is: They (the stablishment) would never believe that ALL soldiers would go on strike. Just a small group. When I was a bank clerk in 1985 strike (we were in a dictatorship by that time) I refused to lie when my bosses asked me: "Why were you not working during these days". I said: "Why? Because I was on strike". Most of clerks lied and had no problem. But me? They have discounted/not paid the eight days I've gone on strike plus the two weekends among these days. So I had 12 days not paid during that month (we are paid every month here in Brazil). But, no problem, I was a single young man and living with my parents. I could afford that. The other strikers could not afford it.

Dude, the USA is a nuclear nation. Do you realise that any country stupid enough to attack the United States would basically be commiting suicide? Think about it. There is a reason why nuclear nations are not at war with each other. It is because everyone knows that going to war with a country that has nukes would end bad for everyone. No country would benefit from bombing everything to oblivion so don't expect anyone to come invading your land. If the USA falls someday, I expect it to be from economical pressures or cultural divide within the country itself, some of which would likely be correlated to the economic and social impacts of climate change

Well people do have some control, but I agree it's hard. I don't get why some people and businesses tell people to limit consumption when doesn't that mean less customers for them? When businesses can and should make eco-friendly products, factories, and businesses so they can keep and attract customers too. John Stossel has a video on socialism on the environment, and he and the comments said businesses help the environment more than than regulation, and showed evidence. Idk. It'd be nice if Our Changing Climate can comment on that. It matters to enlighten people cause people vote, push for change, and are customers. Many people spend on luxuries and nonessentials too.

There are whole valleys that you can't access because the military reserves them as glorified campgrounds, or because they're littered with unexploded artillery. They also fly helicopters over our neighborhood a couple times a day for 'practice'. Thinking about how much pollution is created from these exercises is disheartening.

Developped country do not need the US help. And recently, the US has done more to destabilize the world economy than the opposite: US sanctions on China, on Iran, its renegociation of treaties like NAFTA, its threats against other NATO members, the removal of its army in the Rojava territory which allowed for a Turkish invasion, its increased military support for Saudi Arabia and against other US allies (like Qatar which Trump almost allowed to be invaded by Saudi Arabia)...

The USA borrows the money and its national debt increases every year to pay for the military. Eventually the USA economy will implode on itself and will totally collapse. And the military spending will be one of the biggest cusses of the collapse.

I think it's often easier to find non-copyrighted material of Russian military equipment, I've noticed that before creators tend to include more footage and 3D models of Russian equipment. There are reasons for this, I know that US arms companies actually often own copyrights on the weapons they make and are fairly protective of them since they can make a lot of money from that when those weapons are included in games and movies. So I imagine that's the reason.

Why does it seem as no-one got this on their mind? You've hinted at it, but I'd definitely add the emissions of the military manufacturing, especially the heavy industry. This is particularly important to countries like Germany which obviously isn't close to the US military spending (though still to high) but exports a lot of weapons and thereby is very damaging as well

The order that I would scale back would be to close all non essential bases first, and then at the same time change all existing bases to more low waste, energy efficient daily practices. And finally only the essential bases and training facilities would get high amounts of green retrofitting, while the medium-need bases would focus on eliminating themselves through peace efforts and restorative justice efforts in whatever region they've caused harm in.

People typically only see the helplessness they have as a taxpayer toward their contribution to the military industrial complex. Purposefully lowering income to reduce tax debt no longer works due to the societal control of resources. The silver lining may be that becoming a corporation and wisely using the system of tax breaks, credits, and etc. may be a viable way to succeed in business, make effective changes for the better, and legally and ethically reduce your personal input to the military's coerced demands. Capitalism has done the lobbying for us, learn how to use it.

ill give some insight.. alot of the problems you mentioned were started and caused by people born before 1980.. the new top brass of the military understands and is pushing for change in the way things happen and to be more efficient and environment friendly.. lots of background programs in getting cleaner fuel and what not. there is a culture shift. just need all these old timers out of office and the high rank structure... they are set on old shitty ways tbh.. takes time. also the VA takes up alot of the DOD $$

The wastefulness of the military is absolutely shocking and noticeable as soon as you join. However, I feel as if the video said that a department of defense that actually limits itself to defense is unrealistic. But I think it's less realistic than total demilitarization. I believe the necessity of national defense is a fact of life at this point in history. It's not as if it's never been done, Switzerland is a prime example that has required military service for all males (in contrast with the American military which makes up 1% of its total population) but has used its military to remain neutral rather than get itself involved in global conflict. What is necessary, however, is a descaling of our military and a total change in our objectives and practices. It would seem like demilitarization compared to what we have now, maybe that's what he meant.
