To Mark's Father I am soo deeply sorry for the pain and suffring yout son went through for no reason other than he was a compassionate and altiistic soul. Sir, the fact that you so effortlessly put all other consoderations aside, to be with your son, is a testament to love of a Father, and the human being you are. his father was actually to blame as well as Europe's obsession with DEI. He said he had misgivings about this woman since she was 20 years his son's senior (red flag) and didn't seem to love his son even though his son was infatuated with her. Well…about 6,000 people a year die of drug overdoses in the UK. Let’s say one larger drug dealer smuggled and sold drugs that ended in 10 people’s overdose deaths, plus all the other ways drugs ruin lives, hurt many kids whose parents are addicts and leads to additional crime, as users commit fraud and theft to afford their drugs. It’s not as painful a death,..but shouldn’t 10 overdose deaths plus all the additional drug harm get more time than one death? It’s debatable.

Anything can be made dangerous. British problem is that they always want to ban something rather than work on the criminals who find creative uses to hurt people. Guns are a great example, Britain lowered gun crime, but crime overall didn’t go down, people still murdered the same just with a different weapon. acid is popular in Britain because it’s hard to detect and also it has lowest sentences in Britain.

What I cannot wrap my mind around is that, he told his girlfriend he was going to go to an ex's house to permanently end things, while she left her OWN bed/apartment to go to a PAID bed/hotel while she already had one, he decides to spend the night at the ex while she wanted to leave and he slept in her bed? And where the heck did the ex get sulphuric acid from? Only 12 years after his death? Wtf is going on in this odd situation? Never ever go to an ex's location to end anything, especially don't sleep in their bed. He didn't deserve this, but people, please don't put yourself in a situation like this.

A fashion student who is 20 years his senior? If that is the pretext to any level of personality disorder, such as trying to control a partner's life, let the lesson be that even an individual oriented toward caretaking owes such a person nothing. Nothing more than a stalking report to the police and a blocked number. The way he made himself vulnerable to her has me shaking my head. What she did to him... I hope someone is waiting for her upon her release from prison in order to give her the sentence she deserved. Nothing can bring back the victim, nothing could have restored his health. Nothing, likewise, can absolve her of her absolute guilt. May she rot.

Not saying this is always the case but most of the times there's already a history of some kind of abuse in the relationship I know I had my share of heart to heart with exes that I myself requested but funny enough it was always in public places, not out of fear but more like meeting at home or privately would be too painful for people that used to be so intimate I think it's actually normal to some degree to look for closure More so if it's a couple with no history of breakups etc That being said it's crazy to think people actually plan this kind of thing, I never even conceived this possibility, cause meeting like this usually just involves some crying? Maybe some people get more heated sometimes and fight maybe but never happened to me tho Meeting your ex to f-ing kill them??? It takes a truly wicked soul to be able to carry out something like that and needless to say, a person who's capable of something like this never felt any real love for their partner, only twisted, possessive and evil feelings You are literally not able to cause harm like this to a person you once truly loved

The case of Mark van Dongen redefined cruelty in the context of domestic violence, showing how a disfiguring acid attack could not only cause life-altering physical damage but also destroy the victim’s ability to function in society, ultimately leading to his untimely death. The psychological trauma that Mark experienced, as well as the irreversible nature of his injuries, has made his case a tragic and poignant example of how far-reaching the effects of such violence can be. His story has contributed to broader legal, social, and cultural shifts aimed at combating acid violence and supporting victims of these horrific attacks.

This case raised so much anger and sorrow I broke into uncontrollable sobbing. A few years ago I had a burn accident that took months to heal … it was only to one leg below the knee but the pain will always be ingrained in my memory. And it was not caused by anything as deadly as acid. Burns have got to be the most painful of all injuries! Just think of a time you must have accidentally burnt a finger or hand… multiple that by thousands of times and you still can’t imagine what this man must have felt. My heart breaks for him and for his father who could do nothing to help him but be by his side. Although his son’s pain ended with his death this man has to live the rest of his life experiencing it over and over not the least being the betrayal of the justice system. What kind of stupidity afflicted those jury members to come to the grossly poor decision that they did. I hope they are haunted by this as well as the disdain of their peers for the rest of their lives. Hate has never been an emotion that I come by easily and Lord knows I’ve had plenty of reasons to cultivate this for the things done to me in my lifetime. Yet the hatred that I feel at this moment for this monster that could perpetrate such a deed, has surprised even myself. There are three years left before she comes up for parole, plenty of time to start a petition with thousands of signatures to prevent this from happening. I hope his father or another close relative would start such a petition, and I will be keeping my eyes open for it. Her lack of empathy and her cruelty is not something that can be cured with a few years sentence. Empathy is not a learned emotion and I don’t care what psychologists disagree with that. People like her don’t deserve to breathe the air of freedom. I hope she dies before she ever walks through the open doors of prison. She has nothing good to offer to mankind. We are told from a young age that monsters don’t exist, but in my firsthand experience there are many walking around us, disguised as human beings.

NO, I DO NOT THINK Berlinah Wallace was sentenced appropriately. She not only physically destroyed this young man's body, but she also destroyed his emotional and psychological being. What she did with sulfuric acid was beyond cruel. Words like: sadistic; atrocious; barbaric; merciless; vicious; savage; inhumane; and depraved; are infinitely more appropriate for what she did. Thirteen years is not nearly enough for the type of thing she did. This man suffered unbearable pain for the rest of his life, he might have been put into a coma, but the pain receptors still take a toll on the body whether you are feeling the pain or not. The Bible says an eye for an eye. But today's laws do NOT allow for this kind of thing, as it would be cruel and unusual punishment. Well then...maybe she should not have done it to this defenseless man, just because he no longer wanted to be with her. That in and of itself is a completely another story. Get on with your life...don't try to keep someone that does not want you! Not only does my heart ache for Mark, but as a parent my heart also aches for Mark's Dad who had to sit by helplessly and watch his son suffer beyond what anybody should suffer, let alone be observed! Thank God Belgian Law allows for euthanasia on request for appropriate cases.

As always, you guys do such an amazing job with these stories. So heartfelt and genuine. Thank you. 💝 As a burn survivor myself, I found myself crying through this. Sadly, it is not hard to get these materials. You can buy muriatic acid at any boat or hardware store. It is stronger than sulfuric. That is sad. I can tell you that only having a smaller idea (I burned the back of my leg on a hot motor, leaving all my skin behind) of what he went through, I still think it was murder. His will to live was gone. And she caused it. I remember my bf changing my bandages and screaming in pain. Begging him, PLEADING with him to stop. It felt like a wire brush scrubbing on a horrid burn. I still have PTSD from it. My guess is that if he had stayed alive, infections and his mental state would have taken his life anyway. She needs to be accountable for that. RIP dear man. My heart is with you and all who have loved you.

I am curious about how you get information about how actually all happened to him. Is it any official source of this information ? I haven't thought about this for many years but I remember him like yesterday. He had a notebook with his pictures, and many people who were in contact ( friends, carers, etc.) were writing in it too. I saw his pain, frustration, and anger, and I saw his happy , funny, joking cooperative him. I do substance identificiation in a pharmacy lab as a pharmaceutical assistant and whenever I see an intern be too casual with sulfuric acid, even lower concentrations, I show them what a single drop of even the deluted stuff does to a sheet of paper.
