The predominant modern image of the mighty Viking warriors has become that of the warmonger and marauding berserker. In popular culture, the Norsemen, portrayed as giant, sword-wielding men with flowing hair and bushy beards, have been reduced to a one-dimensional tribe of ruthless warriors, who cared little for the communities they attacked and plundered.
Men like Ragnar Lothbrok, Eric Bloodaxe, Ivar the Boneless and Bjorn Ironside are portrayed as preying on unsuspecting communities and spreading fear across Europe as they laid waste to all that lay before them, taking what they wanted at the point of a sword.
It is true that the Vikings were, without a doubt, brutal men living in a brutal age. They did use their skills as warriors to relentlessly attack Europe and the British Isles to increase their wealth and territory, but that is not all the Vikings were, and their contribution to world history is far more than warmongering.

And I thought it meant "heavy brooch" or breach for that matter XD. Vikings are turned into some mystical family of raiders and future-focused leaders. Mostly, they did not have that much centralized order, and infighting was legendary.

@@PWAVEY all cultures have been involved in some way. The Irish and Scott's were taken hostage by larger tribes. East and West African tribes battled for territory, rights to land and slavery. Not a new concept. Not one I would support. (Referencing redheads btw). All of our ancestors were warriors.

Scandinavia is Denmark, Noway and Sweden they spoke a common language and still speak similar languages a branch of the Germanic languages, Finland however spak a completely different language it is in the Uralic language group like Hungarian and Estonian, Finland is a Nordic country like the Scandinavian but it is not a Scandinavian language and not a Viking country although some of them adopted the culture as other did

If Ragnar did exist, it's not possible he was at Lindisfarne and the siege of Paris. Let's be generous and say Ragnar was 15 during the raid on Lindisfarne in 793 ( unlikely ) that would still make him 67 at the siege of Paris in 845. We already know he wasn't 15 in 793 because the sagas tell us he was married long before any of these raids. Chances are he didn't exist.

Except that "loð.." means hairy og furry, and "brók" means breaches og pants ... so "hairy-pants". No mention what-so-ever to dirt or non-washing. And there is nothing to support the claim that Haraldur "hárfagri" (literally fine-haired) was just and fair. On the contrary he was a brutal and merciless tyrant and he was the main reason for the "exodus" og men and women from Norway to Iceland. - Please get your facts straight if you are going to do videos on the early history of nations you seem completely unfamiliar with. And king Olav DID use fear and intimidation to pressure christianity on the Icelandic people. Leifur Eiríksson had nothing to do with that. He went back home to the settlement in Greenland, to his christian, Icelandic mother, and might have influenced some people there.

The only problem I have with the Vikiings is that they didn't exist - it's a modern myth. The word "viking' is just the Scandi version of the Old English word "wicking" and it just means heathen bandit or pirate. It does not denote Scandinavians who would have been insulted to be called pirates because most Scandinavians were law abiding farmers just like everyone else. Stoies about the "viking" or "wicking" raids don't usually use the word at all, they just talk about raiders who often (but not necessarily) came "from the north". If you are in Lindisfarne everyone in Northumbria and Scotland are north/norse, as indeed are any Irish (well known for piracy) who frequently sailed around the northern tip of Britain. No region had a monopoly of bandits - they came from anywhere that people had fallen on lean times and were forced steal or starve. So "norse" doesn't necessarily mean northener, let alone Scandinavian let alone "Vikings". The clincher is that an early map of the country - predating the "viking/wicking" raids - shows the entire Severn estuary and river labelled "Wicca". It was briefly regarded as a self governing tribal territory until merged into Mercia. Therefore the only documented region that actually bore the name was in fact in southern England. Sadly, this is one of those stories that has been elaborated in the retelling but based only on imaginative re-interpretations. It doesn't do justice to the historical figures retrospectively designated "Viking", like Rollo of Normandy or King Canute. These were civilised and educated men who emerged from sophisticated and well-informed societies. They weren't out to rape and pillage but to establish order in the post Roman landscape.

Ragnar Lodbroks name does not mean dirty pants but hairy pants. These pants was made out of a fur that should protect him from the fires out of a dragons or a snakes mouth. Why was Ragnar called hairy breeches? The ostensible reason for Ragnarr's nickname, loðbrók 'Hairy-breeches', is the protective clothing he wears in the saga's description of his slaying a snake, the increasing size and ferocity of which had posed a threat to Þóra, daughter of Herruðr, whom Ragnarr wins in marriage by this exploit.
