One of the most important and underrated nutritional topics of our time. Finally, we're waking up to how important it is, relative to sodium. Another important note: DON'T take your RDA of potassium all at once. Your kidneys and body can't absorb the serum (blood) potassium that quickly all at once, which is why it's important with certain nutrients to absorb slow and steady rather than a bolus. Even the massive potassium pill doctors give you are time-released.

I've had severe Hypokalemia once and it could've been fatal. Woke up super tired and felt lazy so I kept staying in bed but after an hour later I figured I couldn't move single muscle in my body. Tried my best but fell down on the floor next to my bed, fortunately my phone was still on a charger so I yanked it down by the cable that was luckily next to my hand and called the ambulance. This paralysis was no joke and I'm fortunate that my heart kept going. My Potassium level was at 1.8mmol. Doc was baffled and said "Didn't know you can survive that."

Good breakdown on the importance of potassium. I have Hypokalemic Periodic Paralysis and have to take two diuretics: Acetazolamide and Spironolactone. I have to modify my diet and workout routine , but it is still possible to live a normal, healthy life 👍
@jlg33156 ай бұрын
i find potassium very confusing. there is no way most of us get anywhere near 3-5000 mg per day. it seems to me a person would have to eat a fairly specific diet daily and a lot of it.
@DevilRitual6 ай бұрын
Do you drink water? in 1l of averege bottle water you have 1.1mg of potassium which is like 33% od daily recommended size. Add to this all food you eat during a day, and bam you are at finish line
@Storiaron6 ай бұрын
Most of us are also iron deficient to varying levels. People just accept suboptimal health as normal if they dont know it isn't normal and could be improved.
@rorykr5 ай бұрын
@@DevilRitualdrinking water has extremely negligible amounts of potassium in it. 1.1mg is next to nothing. You would have to drink 3,000 liters of water per day just to meet your minimum intake off water alone. Treated tap water has around 8mg per liter according the the WHO. That means at most you’d be getting about 30mg of potassium per day from water. That’s not even 1% of the average daily recommended intake.
@rorykr5 ай бұрын
You also have to consider that meat has a large amount of potassium in it as well. If you have an 8oz steak with a potato, that’s already 1,100mgs. Say you had milk and cereal for breakfast, that’s an easy 500mgs. A salad for lunch can easily be over 1000 if you pick wisely, and have meat with it. Fruits for a snack and you’ve got over 500 more mgs.
@LionofTruth1823 күн бұрын
Exactly. It’s near impossible to get it through foods alone.

I would seriously love if you did a video exploring or even ranking. One on bitter greens especially the over looked ones rarely used in North America and one on 'weeds' such as nettle, purslane, dandelion greens and root, lambs quarters, etc. Their is some really great nutrients on these foods and they really deserve a spotlight. Edit.... Dandelion greens is an amazing source of potassium too. It is a very good diuretic but doesn't deplete the body of potassium either in case anyone wants to know.

So to eat your recommended amount of potassium you just neet to eat around 530g of salmon or around 5 avocados if you are a vegetarian. Potassium is always low when I do my week of tracking my food intake and I find it extremly difficult to implement a solution. It is not like vitamin c, were you can eat half a bell pepper and you are good. Potassium is always an effort from your whole diet. Its very frustrating when even the densest sources of it only satisfy your daily need at over a pound eaten... Well what do you mean by diets? When I think diets I think named diets. Carnivore. Vegan. Keto. Low fat. Mediterranean. The reason why there's so many of them is because they don't work for everyone. There's too many variables regarding an individual and their diet even just considering where they are and where they're going. And also importantly what they enjoy and will actually consistently eat. What I'm trying to do is hand you the building blocks to build an individual diet. What are the essential pieces, what are the pieces that can be replaced, exchanged and rotated. Trying to get you to think about what you need because no one else is actually going to be able to tell you that. Sorry there's no easy answers. And if you build that diet yourself and it turns out to be a popular model then great for you. But there really is no easy way to objectively measure such complexities like diets Sorry for the long response I'm just so annoyed that I'm not getting this point across in the videos somehow
