I’ve noticed that for most people under about 65 clowns are often more of an image of terror (even when they’re not designed to be scary) this corresponds to kid’s television with its beginnings in the post war generation. Those of born in the turbulent mid 1960’s and later started seeing clowns as something threatening or scary. Especially with the rise of scary clown movies and real life events of the late 70’s and 80’s. Based on other videos I’ve seen clowns and their appearances may be a kind of primordial fear.

theres been a long history of killer clowns or violent clowns throughout time but its so interesting to me that now clowns are seen as scary by most! the power of american society's influence is crazy!

It's a good video & information but not a lot of people talk about the occult connections with clowns. The red&white aspect has a lot to do with the red&white king or something, i can't remember exactly but there's a lot more to all of the imagery& elements of clowns/clowing. All clowns are a satirical take on humanity& it's structural behaviors. They're reflections, not everyone likes all of the things they see in their reflection like when people started taking away the "wholesome" ideals of clowns just being a giant toy come to life& started allowing themselves to be who they really were while putting on a clown costume. Those people are still clowns, they just don't fit the whitewashing of what people want clowns to be. Just like with photo editing &plastic surgery, those are forms that people usually tend to be more ok with because it can be more aesthetically pleasing. When it doesn't make you feel good it's a problem, like with so much else in the world. Problem is different people think differently.

Do you have any book recommendations on clowns? I had a digital version of clowns by towen and I was absolutely obsessed with it! but I lost it before I could finish it and its far too expensive to get a physical copy so i'm in search of other clown history books!

I've learned so much. Very interesting history. Even Rockso from Metalocalypse makes perfectly sense now, his tragic life is caused by his actions. And he's a greedy horny troublemaker, despite his rather harmless intentions. It's like a clown act, and his addiction is only the catalyst for his misadventures. He is a clown image of a rock star.

Do you have any sort of bibliography? List of resources about clowns?

A lot of these types and forms in this video would yes be "tricksters" etc but the American circus clown is of a different sort - the clown, the modern clown is not a wise trickster, or a holy fool, etc... the modern American clown is largely derived from minstrel shows and blackface characters - look at the makeup - the wide smile, the bug eyes, the big feet, the raggedly clothes, et al.

@@1fakeplastictree No disrespect to the maker of the video, lots of hard work went into it.. My critique, most of the clown content before 1700's is conjecture based on texts that where published, but questionably researched. These books are often sited unquestionably to set up a antecedent justification for current scholarly pursuits. So basically every thing in the first 15 minutes is made up. Yes there are sources but are they accurate? Probably not. The anecdote of the peanuts being thrown in ancient Greece when peanuts come from peru and made it to europe around 1600's is just an example. Also that no research was done by the video maker to interview clowns working today outside of the west is kind of heart breaking. Just take none western artists out of your mouth if you aren't going to interview any yourself. Now to European/ italian Comedia, much like Shakespeare, was not written down, most likely the artists could not read, so who recorded this history? To my mind this leaves to much room for falasy. Sort of like if you took a modern Renaissance Fair and tried to tackle they comedy and entertainment of the 15-16th century. The rest of the video is good enough and well researched up until the modern era. Fellini's film Clowns might give you a better idea of the scope of the post WW2 european style. Some of the actors in the film are famous clowns from that time. Clowns are still working live in the streets and circuses in Europe. This lazy end of the vid that focuses on films and tv shows is most disappointing. Clown is by its nature a live art and not a written one. Editing in media is a kind of writing, so to me film and tv is not clown but simply physical acting. Often using stolen material created by working clowns in circuses currently. Like the direct address of Dead Pool, I've been using that gag since the 90's and it was old then.
