Aussie Vet here. I can understand you would have quite a lot of Vets in the comments section who joined during 9/11 but for me, watching the aftermath of the Battle of Mogadishu on the news was my "Wake up and choose" moment. I was 17 at the time and my cousins had deployed to Somalia with Australia's contingent of Peace Keepers. My enlistment date was 4th of October 1994. Although my deployments were to places like Bougainville, East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan my decision to serve in the ADF was born through what these men went through.

Kind of cool story - a few years ago I was audiobook-ing the Black Hawk Down book so it was fresh in my mind. On a walk at a local park my wife saw a memorial marker and idly said aloud "Rierson". Sort of as a joke I said "Delta Force Specialist Matt Rierson?" And she goes "uh..yes.." Matt Rierson was one of the Delta operators who survived the Black Hawk Down day then was killed the next day in a mortar attack on the airfield. He was from Nevada, Iowa, where I live. Tiny town, weird coincidence. I think if you Google Matt Rierson there's an image of the exact grave marker in the Nevada Park north of my house.

As a former Army Medic I'm quite surprised that the medical unit wasn't recognized with citations. That medical team helped pave the way for saving countless lives during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Much of what I and other medical specialties learned was a result of the lessons from this battle.

I am unbelievably honored to have met Dr. John Uhorchak. He told the same story when he was honored in his hometowns Wall of Fame. I got chills when he popped up on screen. I heard him tell this story 10 years ago when I was 16, and I remember it like it was yesterday. I was a Dover C-5 crew chief at the time. We went to Hunter AAF to deploy the 24th Mech AFTER this tragedy. A day late and too many casualties and deaths later. Politicians dictate American policy, choose wisely. Never fight unless you fight to win overwhelmingly. God Bless our Warriors!

Survivors guilt is crippling. It takes more than religion, more than courage, more than any kind of therapy in existence to overcome. I my opinion it takes a survivor to overcome it, and that person should not feel guilt but gratitude. They survived to help stop it happening again. I will never forget Somalia and what we (USMC) had to do to seperate the Warlords from fighting each other and protecting the UN food transports. I met Mike Durant and this account fills in a lot that is not in the movie or Mikes book. I worked orthopedics at Ft. Leonard Wood hospital after being in the Airborne so I know what these military patients go thru. Big respect to these heroes that were just trying to bring stability and food to hungry people.

Thank you for posting this, it's a different perspective and appreciated! Operation Gothic Serpent / T.F. Ranger and the resulting tragedy hits home for me. I did not know Gordon, but served with Randy Shughart in 2/75, I was older than him but we became good friends - he was my Ranger buddy. After the pull-out and upon returning to the U.S., certain members who knew that we were friends briefed me on what happened. It did not surprise me that Randy would insist on trying to rescue the helicopter crew. But I still wept for not only Randy, but for Stephanie and the family. And every 03 October, I have a beer (or 2) in remembrance and to honor Randy and all our fallen warriors.
