A couple more fun facts about Donald & Douglas: 1. The Rev. W. Awdry's numbers for them, 57646 and (presumably) 57647, are fictional but are in line with their real life basis, the ex-Caledonian Railway 812 Class. The highest number given to a real 812 by British Railways was 57645, so Donald & Douglas would have been the next youngest members of the class had they been built. 2. The numbering is also pertinent as the 812 Class, first built in 1899, were being withdrawn from service and sent for scrap when Donald & Douglas' debut book, "The Twin Engines", was published in 1960; the last 812 would be withdrawn in 1963. This explains their paranoia of being sent back to the "Other Railway" (read: BR) to likely meet the fate of their kin. 3. The Caley 812's, nicknamed "Jumbos" for their relatively large size by 0-6-0 standards, were extremely successful mixed traffic engines. Although built primarily for freight traffic, their relatively high top speed of 55-65 mph regularly saw them on passenger trains such as the boat trains that met the ferries from Ireland at Stranraer. Not exactly surprising since they had the same boiler type as the larger "Dunalastair" Class 4-4-0 express passenger locomotives. 4. As part of an agreement between the Caledonian Railway and its Chief Mechanical Engineer John McIntosh and the Belgian State Railways (SNCB/NMBS, depending on if you're speaking French or Dutch), some 891 copies of the 812 Class were built in or for service in Belgium, becoming the Type 30 and Type 32 locomotives. Initially they were only used for freight, but after 1909 they also saw use on local commuter trains and sometimes to help expresses on hilly sections. During the First World War, a few of the Caledonian's smaller 294 Class (also nicknamed "Jumbo") were sent to France to aid the war effort and often rubbed buffers with the Belgian copies of their Scottish brethren. No doubt, had they personalities as they do in Thomas, they would have been very confused. Most were retired between 1947 and 1959, with most being scrapped though some saw use as stationary boilers. 2 examples survive today in museums with a third having been saved as a source of spare parts before finally being cut up for scrap in 2002. 5. Only one 812 Class survives today: Number 828, restored to operation in the summer of 2020 at the Strathspey Railway in Scotland. She was built in 1899, the last of the first batch of locomotives of this class.

The main accident could be a reference to banking engines. Locomotives like Big Bertha were designed specifically for this purpose, and performed their duties well. But more often than not, much more powerful engines would be used, and this could cause the rearmost trucks or the break van to break under the pressure. It was more common here in America, but it did happen in the UK as well.

Great video. Though, as a railway man myself, I feel like I should clarify something: in all of your episodes, you say that someone should have been fired for what happened. That's not how it works. You don't loose your job on the railway, only because you made a mistake. Especially not when no one was hurt. Minor accidents like crashing into a signalbox, or loosing control over your train are things that can happen, and back in those days, they bothered even less about them that these days! Be asured that, in most cases, no one got fired.

On the topic of the Spiteful Brakevan not having an inspiration, the closest I know of is the story of the NZR G class, as built as Garratt locomotives. While they wouldn't actually completely destroy a wagon, they were too powerful for their own good, and often ripped the drawbars off wagons!

You know something? Awdry has done some unrealistic things with Thomas before. Thomas is an E2 painted blue (green in TAB), but in real life, none of the E2s are painted blue or green, just brown or black all over. Unlike most E2s since they are rubbi- I mean... incapable of pulling coaches, Thomas is one of the rare E2s out there that is capable of shunting and pulling cars and coaches, proving everyone that Thomas was an experimental engine this entire time.
