most of Rev Awdry's stories are based on real events to at least some extent. My favourite is the one where the Wind causes James to whirl round on the turntable. This was actually quite a common event at a Place called Hawes Junction (Now Garsdale) on the Settle and Carlisle line, the turntable eventually getting a timber stockade to stop the wind. The offending turntable survived to be preserved and was moved to the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway (the same place where The Railway Children was filmed)

2:38 fun fact: there was an inspiration for unstoppable , it was in 2001 when csx 8888 ran away from a yard due to a driver error, it would travel for 2 hours at around 50 mph, hilariously attempts to stop the train included the police shooting it to hit an emergency fuel cut off as well as several people who who attempted to board the train but chickened out when they saw what speed the train was really travelling at, a portable de-rail would also fail at stopping the train. In the end another csx loco would chase 8888 and slow it down to 11 mph where a train master was able to jump aboard and stop the train, another loco was also lined up ahead of 8888 to "ram" it if needs were to be.

Thanks for making this! Considdering Edward the blue engine, where the story originated in, was released in November '54, it is almost certain that the Rev. W. V. Awdry took inspiration from this story, as it was described in "The Railway Gazette" back then.

I never knew that so many Thomas and Friends episodes are based on true stories I knew the engines were based on real locomotives but I never knew about the episodes themselves. I’ll have to watch the rest of your videos because it sounds very interesting and I’d like to know more about the history of the TV series that basically started my interest in trains and railway crossings.

Here’s some guesses for the unknown reasons of why the train in Illinois started: 1 - The brakes weren’t on enough. 2 - Like for James, somebody may had wondered into the cab and fiddled with the controls. 3 - The wheels were stiff to move when the crew was on board and trying to start the engine, and it started when they got off to get help.

You ought to read 'Red for Danger' by L.T.C. Rolt. Full of major railway accidents/incidents from the 1840s to 1957. While you're at it, pick up a copy of 'Railway Adventure' as it gives great details of the first 2 or 3 years of the Talyllyn Railway.

Do you think you could do The True Story of Percy Takes the Plunge? The most likely inspiration for it was an incident that occurred on the Alderney Railway in November 1911 (although it is believed that Percy Takes the Plunge was based on an incident that occurred in Burnham on Sea, on which there's very little information). What happened on the Alderney Railway was that engine No. 2 a Peckett 0-4-0ST was pulling a goods train when it derailed off the Alderney breakwater, into the English Channel, due to the rails being waterlogged and covered in sea weed. Removing the reverser was SUPPOSED to be standard practice even before the Alton Illinois, incident. How do I know? I own multiple operators manuals for locomotives that pre-date that event. In each of them, it clearly states that if the engine should be left unattended, the reverser lever must me removed from the control stand. Someone just didn't follow safety protocol. Also, very sorry for your loss. Wishing you the best.
