The cast was genuinely afraid of the T-Rex. In an interview with Stan Winston, he said "Those actors were dealing with a life size T-Rex that could kill them. So, they didn't have to act afraid, they were afraid" This was also backed up by Jeff Goldblum who said that everyone on set were told to shut off their electronics whenever the T-Rex was turned on as there were real fears that it could cause it to malfunction - putting everyone in danger.

Much like a real dinosaur all that's left is the bones, he said. What they did with the actual robotics, I don't know, but it sounded like they just dismantled it.”

RedSynergy2k the early 2000’s was really when movies started to focus on CG effects. You are soooo right. Jurassic park was so realistic. I miss the days too where i got engrossed in a film and felt like i was there as it was so real. Newer films that are mostly cgi just dont have that feel. Jurassic world (not the newest one) just pissed me off. The way the raptors move is just so unnatural when they are running etc and i dont know if this makes sense but they seem flat, almost as if they dont look 3D. The alien films were the same. Alien and aliens felt realistic, alien 3 was very cgi and it showed and alien resurrection was so piss poor with cgi fakery that i didnt know whether to laugh or cry when i saw it, as alien and aliens are still my all time fav movies ever with jurassic park and the lost world being just behind them. How can cinema go so backwards with the advancement of technology? I guess its to do with cost. Guessing its cheaper to cgi a whole movie than make animatronics. Shame though. We really need a director to put a huge amount of money into making a fully animatronic jurassic park or alien film again. Having said that though, films like jp and aliens will be remembered as classics in time because they are beautifully done, but directors dont care about that, to them its a case of how quickly can i get this film done at the lowest cost to make a huge amount of money quickly. Its sad really. Money makes people not see the bigger picture (excuse the pun).

Purploy JW used CGI, because it wpuld have been imbossible to use animatronics in many scenes. Like the pteranodons and dimorphodons, the scene with the gyrosphere(too many dinosaurs to be made as animatronics and the dinosaurs were also running in that scene), the T-Rex vs Indominus fight scene would have been hard to be made with animatronics and the mosasaur would have been imbossible as well

Yeah, I think no matter how good the cgi is, it still never really feels "there" whereas the animatronics are actually real things

Chunklet for me the fact is that animatronics are already part of the movie which makes the animatronics blend in with the movie resolution as does have too high detailed or low to make it look cartoonish and also suck things like shadows of the t-Rex will seem natural is because that is how our eyes perceived what the shadow of the t-rex to be due to the fact its hard to recreate such details like shadows the best recreations of nature is nature itself as nature is unpredictable but yet subtle enough for recreation but just not top grade kind

When the animatronic is in the rain, it causes the animatronic to shiver, but that is what you would do if you were cold and wet in the rain in real life, to be honest. That animatronic has personality. That’s amazing.

The earlier JP Movie dinosaurs are MUCH MORE realistic than the newer ones tbh. The excitement when the realism is just so fantastically detailed and realistic, now on the newer movies they look quite.. fake which makes it less exciting, and yes I know they are fake and all but I mean the older dinosaur models are much more believable than the new ones.

Gotta love how they made this great, colossal, horrific beast only for it to end up shivering in cold from the rain. Now I just want to give her a warm dino-hug. Also, guess this is what that one outtake in A Bug's Life was referencing when the songbird practical effect broke down (and that beast was a dinosaur too... classy).

I can truly appreciate the Animatronic work in these films, but I think using a mix of CGI and Animatronics in the original Jurassic Park was the best way to go instead of fully robotic. Jp3 Animatronics were God awful in my opinion, besides the raptors. Jurassic World is really CGI-reliant, but I didn't 100% mind, the dinosaurs still looked really good.

Braden Nielsen I agree! I absolutely love animatronics but they definitely have their limitations the mix of cgi and animatronics was done masterfully which is what made the film change history, if it would’ve just been animatronics many of scenes would have not been able to have been done!

And this right here in summary is why the original film utterly demolishes and pees all over the new films. The amount of effort they put into this one scene alone was extraordinary and it truly paid off. You can still watch this over 20 years later and be tricked into thinking they might have somehow actually placed a real dinosaur on the set. It looks flawless and utterly spectacular.

haha I'm so use to the modern world, and up to date CGI and rendering. I dabble in rendering and use blender and what not quite frequently. coming from someone who works with alot of CGI. I still look at this movie in utter shock. this film was so ahead of its time. would have loved to have been in the theaters watching this when it came out. we've come so far, and each day we get further. this will forever be looked back on as something that really kicked off the world of computer generated imaging. each time you look away to grab a snack or blink or use the restroom. you probably miss what i can only imagine is 2 sleepless nights living on redbull, rendering these fantastic images with those old computers. its honestly amazing

Didnt expect to get a reply ! So after emailing with the Stan Winston school of technology. They told me that after filming had been completed for the raining break out scene that due to the rain there was a lot of water damage to rexy and the latex started to rot and she was dismantled. Super sad right ? I’m glad that they were able to reuse the bull T. rex from jp2 for the trex in jp3.

If i remember it right, that water malfunctioning was why the T-rex smashed through the glass roof of the Jeep with the 2 kids holding it up and screaming real screams. It wasn't supposed to happen, but it made it into the final cut of the movie. Yup, the fear of that scene was genuine.

As others have said I think this is a myth, the t-rex coming through the roof was in the script, the only mistake was that a part of the sun roof glass broke at the corner. That said it does look like quite a dangerous scene to film I wonder if they would do that with child actors these days.
