I did an Off The Beaten Rack on Scud The Disposable Assassin several years ago. While I was working on it I happened to mention the rare Scud action figure. I've always wanted one of these illusive figures but I didn't know anything about them. Why were these figures so illusive and expensive? I knew there had to be a story behind these toys... and boy was I right. Join me as we explore the sorted past of Shocker Toys and in particular Founder and CEO Geoff Beckett Jr. who's allegedly at the center of a decades long con job on writers, artists and consumers spanning more than a decade at this point! Um...hi. I was actually the guy who originally pitched what actually turned into "Indie Spotlight" to Geoff. I'm happy to talk about any details I can remember (It's been awhile, and I've kinda blocked some of it out), but one thing I will definitely tell you is that ToyBiz didn't steal anything. When we first started talking about it, he asked me to send him a list of titles that we could start looking into licenses for. I created one, and sent it to him. Within HOURS he had posted it as "these are the licenses we are pursuing", but there were absolutely no agreements at that time. It had literally been less than two days. Then less than six months after that, ToyBiz announced their line, accompanied with fully painted test shots. They were definitely waaaaay into production before I'd even pitched the idea to Geoff.

He kinda just took any idea and acted like it was a sure thing, right? We talked about him using his Kachoo figures to make a Julie from The Maxx at one point too (possibly after that license slipped? I forget by now). I know he was also going after Judge Dredd and asked me to try my (very very unstable) hand at a custom for a show once. It's all such a shame, because I genuinely like that SCUD figure.
@JerkComic
@JerkComic 2 жыл бұрын
@@FarOutJunk Really? Oh man, that's a move of brilliance! I would have been on a Julie figure like white on rice! and looking at the sculpts that would have been a great choice actually! I saw his customs would range in quality greatly from sculpt to sculpt, interesting he tried to get you to make one up for him. I've been trying to track down people that did work for him as I would murder to get my hands on some of the Maxx stuff he worked on and had produced that never saw shelves - didn't know he'd made a play at Dredd, that would have fit the design and build really well too. And yeah, it's a big shame imo. I would love to see someone take that Scud design and just retool it from the bottom up and release it now with not crap plastic, it hold up THAT well imo.

@@JerkComic On the REAL! A "Julie Winters" from "The Maxx" action figure or statuette or bust even, would have been popular with even non-comic fans if done right. That Sam Keith aesthetic is off the chain. Fools missed out on that one. Great *Video Journalism* as usual, BTW! Keep it cooking U.J.!

If memory serves, those GWAR toys were supposed to come out in time for the Sounds of the Underground tour. It was an all-day festival/arena tour and GWAR headlined in 2005. They were playing to 10,000 people per night. What a wasted opportunity.

I remember seeing indie series 1 in my local Toys R Us in North Carolina (I think that may be how I got the Maxx) I remember Kabuki hung on the pegs forever. I unfortunately paid for all of series two along with the “exclusives” mucus tick and Barry Tick. I got a Tick, mucus version and dick tracy. Oddly enough, when I got my Mucus Tick, the arms were on backwards. I was able to switch them myself but I posted about it on a forum (might’ve been the Shocker forums) I then got a second Mucus Tick from Geoff for free! It was odd and probably some way to instill trust or something.

I knew I had seen pictures of them in Toys R Us, I still have NO clue how he managed to get them to stock that stuff. Those chains are huge and getting shelf space isn't an easy thing. Always wondered if it was a regional thing or what... And yeah, for whatever reason Beckett would just do that crap sometimes. I guess maybe an effort to win over people who were thinking that all this scam talk might have some substance or endear the internet somehow? Not sure... weird dude, haha. That sucks you got hit but at least you got figures. That's better than 99.9% of people! Thanks for checking this out, hope you enjoyed it and just wait for part 2 if you thought this was crazy!

Yup, I hit on that in part 2 actually. They were SUPPOSED to make a figure of the winners from Season 1 and a few people from Season 2 but only a prototype figure of Feedback from Season 1 and a few Shockinis of people from Season 2 ever showed up at a single San Diego ComiCon, haha. SO MUCH wasted potential. Wish they'd gotten their act together because no lies, I would love to still see that Scud available - not to mention that Maxx! He doesn't get an entire section to himself, there's just not enough to talk about. I do cover every bit of detail I had about him though. He's essentially just a kit bash by Shocker who was a creator of large scale customs figures... the body is Shadowhawk and only Beckett would have thought that showing this fact off would make the toy cooler somehow. Such a crap figure. Need one for the PC though, haha! It's one of like I think about 4 or 5 pieces of Maxx merch I've never owned. Had a chance at one years ago for like a hundred bucks and couldn't bring myself to pay it... looks like I should have done it though as I doubt I'll ever afford one now, haha!

@@JerkComic Well the first thing you find out when you try and fight someone like this is that the Better Business Bureau is useless. It's the equivalent of someone online compiling mean letters from your former neighbors. Second, when you contact the state prosecutor and ask them to take some sort of action against someone IN their state doing terrible things, they ignore you. You can also try and get a whole bunch of people cheated by an individual to unite against them, but generally, people can't be bothered. If you tried to talk to the comic book creators involved in Indie Spotlight, you'll know what I mean. As it was, New England Comics were contacted several times about what was happening with their Tick license and did nothing. Only when people started tweeting at Ben Edlund about the situation did the license get pulled almost the next day. Conversely, Tim Seeley doesn't care.

I personally got close half a dozen times to ordering but never did so I never got shorted, thus "allegedly". I legit have NO clue how this guy never saw any legal repercussions from this. The fact that I could follow so much of this story and track this much mishandled and blatantly stolen money was kind of mind blowing. Sucks they got you for money as I know they did so many others. And another interesting thing that I've learned is that they didn't pay basically ANYONE. I've had everyone from people such as yourself that purchased cases or supposed deliveries that never came in and even ex-employees that were never paid for their work. An absolute embarrassment of a company and person in my personal opinion. I'd love to have a Maxx, Gone and Scud but almost glad I never got them at the time considering the stunts this guy pulled.

I'd been dealing with Geoff since he first announced his Ape-X, and I made fun of it, and he told me he was going to sue me in the early '00s. By the time SCUD was announced, Marvel Legends had already been around for a a few years, so the kind of articulation Shocker was doing was neat, but not really revolutionary - but still definitely above and beyond for a small company. Definitely a riff on ML, though. This much I got from conversations with him back then. Geoff's first appearance was in an old ToyFare Magazine from the early '00s, where he appeared at the bottom of a page with a giant Shoulder Action Figure that looked like it was made from styrofoam by a child. I was hooked from that moment on. They never went into production, obviously. FYI, Metalocalpyse figures did kinda go into production; they were cheap resin figures that looked awful. The only ones that came out were Nathan Explosion and Murderface. I don't know how many were made, but I had a couple and sold them long, long ago because they were so ugly. And yes, all of the Shocker toys I have I got directly from him as a media contact. Never saw them anywhere else! This is an excellent summary of everything I know about this guy and my interactions with him over the years.

I was one who supported them, pre-ordered and even said no to a re-fund in the hopes the figures would come. Having been a part of this story as it happened the doc is well done. However nothing can compare to actually going through it and deal with Geoff personally through forums and e-mails. When I first saw his pitch for GBRjr and the launch of the Facebook page that followed, I thought GTFO no one is believing your shit anymore. I'm out around $200 kind of an expensive lesson but whatever. I did notice recently the Dan Garrett Blue Beetle is now available by Creative Comics and Collectibles who after checking them out, has Geoff listed as an employee on their LinkedIn page. So he's still at it, although it looks like Hack/Slash and Blue Beetle figures were finally produced. I want the figure, but knowing Geoff is behind it I'm not giving them my money, won't even get it from BBTS just of principles. Don't know if this will be in your part 2, but something to check out.

Jealous! I always thought the Tick looked pretty solid. Too bad I'd never pay that price for a toy... well apart from my precious Scuds. Lord have mercy I still can't believe I landed a SDCC model 1 for a decent price. Can not wait to get that sucker on the shelf next to model 2. Now down go getting a Sol model mint on card for a reasonable price! It only took me 8 years to get the first 2, sure it won't be THAT hard hahahah

I actually followed this all in real time and I’m fairly certain I’m still Facebook friends with Geoff it was a big drama fest, I’m glad I never bought anything from him and he almost got me with both the Tick and Cassie Hack he had teased before all this stuff imploded

Yeah I normally don't pile on with the antics and drama, but this was too insane not to talk about - especially considering he's back at it again and I think a lot of people don't know that. CCC his newest company finally managed to get the Hack Slash Cassie out btw, I'm SURE the license is expired and probably not even through that company as I'm talking with AVP and they've said that the creator hasn't been able to get a hold of them since the figure released - go figure right? Hope you enjoyed this one - was an insane ride researching and writing this one!

@@JerkComic I thought that sculpt looked familiar, and yes very much enjoyed going down memory lane on this. There are to many scam artists in the community and it’s easier for all of us when we know who they are

Oh yes. One of the very, VERY few action figures I've ever considered paying triple digits for. Never did, but I've been close more times than I can count. Amazing figure... if it didn't fall apart if you took it out like some lame Go-Bot crap from the 80s that is, hahaha

He still owes me almost $30,000 as shown in the 6:16 mark and over 10 years of Bad press that has ruined our fans faith in us, and demoralized our Artists.

Yes sir brother, tried to clear up ANY confusion that you guys were involved with this. The second part is coming this Sunday and delves deeper and explicitly states that fact as well as shows that you are doing your best and hounding him to get your stuff. Sorry again this all happened to you, but I appreciate you keeping in touch and being so candid and open with me about your experiences and sharing them here so that hopefully we can stop this from happening to anyone else in the future... would be nice if you could get your freakin' figures after all these years too!

@@JerkComic Oh I get that overall, I'm personally just frustrated / Expressing frustration at the situation as the hard work our team did for years prior to the 2012 kickstarter got wiped out because of working with him. And 10 years since we still haven't recovered. 10 years of possibilities and potential wiped out.

@@angryvikings that's one of the things I point out is how hard it hit so many people and how hard you and others have tried to get this all resolved. Such a load of crap. I don't understand how he's never gotten in real trouble!
