Yeah, I always felt bad for Marlon. When Cristoff was feeding him the lines about how he’d never lie to him, Marlon looks like he hates himself for saying it. And I really think he’s telling Truman in his own way not to trust him… because Truman looks like he got the message. And yeah, I think it wouldnhave to be either that Marlon was another of those unwanted babies, or his parents casually committed him to this lifetime gig. That’s messed up.

This is my favorite Jim Carrey movie. This was released before the big boom of reality tv shows in the US. In 2008, Popular Mechanics included this film in their list of top ten prophetic science fiction films. There is also a mental disorder called Truman Show syndrome, or Truman Show delusion, where a person believes they're being secretly recorded and broadcast on national tv.

This movie was directed by Peter Weir, and it includes one of the best of what I call the Weir Moment. It occurs in every one of his films. It's the moment when the main character experiences some wrenching, terrible emotional revelation - and the audience is _not allowed to see it._ Here, it's when Truman hits the wall and realizes his entire life has been a lie. He beats the wall and screams and weeps, and we don't get to see his face at all. I love this personal trope of Weir's. It emphasizes his deep respect for his characters, how he treats them like real people, giving them the dignity he would accord to any person in the real world - he gives them _privacy._ (Check out any of his other films and you'll find the Weir Moment in all of them, and all of them just as deep and affecting.) The reason they keep pulling Lauren away and shoving Meryl at him is because Sylvia (who plays Lauren) is an extra. She's not contracted to even speak to Truman, let alone have any kind of relationship with him, whereas Meryl has had the contract since she was a teenager (possibly since she was a child if the character is native to his town). Extras CANNOT speak to main actors on camera, not ever. If they do, either the scene has to be reshot (obviously impossible here), or the production company has to jump the hoops to get the extra into the union, and that is something they only ever do if the director decides the extra is worth including in a speaking role. (Expensive; back in the 90's when I was doing extra work, one single line would get you $535 for that day.) That's why Sylvia was banned from the set - her rebellious interaction with Truman required the production company to pay her big bucks for that unplanned scene, plus having writers retool the story to account for the aftermath. Fun fact: Both Meryl and Marlon are named for famous actors Meryl Streep and Marlon Brando. Also, according to Laura Linney (who plays Meryl), the backstory she created for her character included the fact that her contract specified a $10,000 bump every time she had sex with Truman. Acting is a complicated profession!

This movie was made before reality TV was a big thing. The Real World was on MTV but it wasn't nearly like what it would become. When we saw this we couldn't imaging that tv audiences would just watch real people just living. (Or watching people watch movies!!!) Since then The world has become The Truman Show!

Delightful and astute commentary, as always. Thanks. (And I get what you mean about ending it on his catchphrase but I think the way they ended it was also on-point, with the viewers just moving on to the next show. "What else is on?" That's quite telling as well. Disposable TV. Disposable lives.)

A couple of films that are complimentary to this; the first is exactly like you were saying, where people have a 24/7 live streaming Social Media life, The Circle (2017) staring Emma Watson and Tom Hanks. Another film is the opposite, S1m0ne (2002) with Al Pacino, a producer who secretly digitally created an actress for a film and she becomes an overnight sensation.

I remember people saying this was ahead of it's time etc... Nope, the people who said that were probably expressing those thoughts via their "smart" devices. This was/is a dark satire of their own dystopian reality. Just magnified and somewhat broadened. Although that magnification and scope (pun) has become increasingly zoomed in. And they still have no idea. Utterly love your reactions, though. Always brining yourself into the mix, or blend if you will. ❤

If you're looking for recommendations, lots of the director Peter Weir's films would be excellent choices to react to - they're wowsers that tend to take the viewer out a whole new door. They actually call the disorder of believing you're being watched with cameras as Truman Syndrome. They used this movie to name the affliction, but people have felt like that prior to this movie. I have had those thoughts since I was a kid in the 80s. I never believed it for real, but I always thought it felt like I was being watched with cameras and I would make up elaborate stories about it in my head when I was bored (ADHD).

The Truman Show is a great insight to the threat of this world today. Not bloggers/vloggers/streamers, but the elite who conspire to manipulate the world. You don't need a giant studio to create the truman show. You just need to control the media, control the cameras, control the mainstream stories/narratives, and censor all outside "unsanctioned misinformation." First step is convincing the world that the online world is the real world (instead of just a fake virtual reality, which it is), and then the second step is to manipulate and control the artificial virtual world to twist reality as you wish. This is how you pretend to be God of a pretend universe, and AI are just going to be the prophets and truth-speakers of these fake god[s] trying to control the world through their fake, designed false reality.

Truman show is a allegory for man's struggle with God, the devil and the unknown... The producer is God.. he trys Truman, but in the end only wants the best for him and don't want to harm him. The woman is Satan tempting him with hidden knowledge and secrets, trying to get him to leave essentially paradise. And then there Truman or "True Man" who at the end of the movie. Chooses darkness and taboo over paradise
