I love that we don't see any more of Truman once he exits the studio. We (the audience) saw enough and don't have any more access to his life-very meta. Also, Ed Harris' character asking Truman to stay was pure egomania. Once Truman knew the reality of his existence, the show was wrecked.

Exactly!!! It's great to hear someone else mention this because it is one of the most meta moments in the history of film! The first time I watched "The Truman Show" movie, I felt cheated when they did not show Truman meet up with Lauren (Natasha McElhone) at the end. Then it dawned on me that I had become just like the audience in the film. I wanted to see every detail of Truman's life, but it really was none of my business. That was a moment only for Truman and Lauren. Such brilliant and beautiful writing!!!

@@danwest9900 exactly, the film is, among other things, a commentary on modern voyeurism. The fact that the story would make you feel cheated in the end not to see their reunion is such a clever device to make you think about the film's message.

Well, if you want to go up an extra level of meta - Truman is a fictional character and the movie "The Truman Show" has ended so...he ceases to exist. Truman, like Shroedinger's Cat, is both alive and dead until we perceive him again in a sequel. 🤯

Andrew Niccol uses scifi and things that border on it to deliver some interesting social commentary in his films. Prior to Truman - which was his big breakthrough - he did "Gattaca" (1997) with Ethan Hawk, Jude Law and Uma Thurman. If you have not seen it, I highly, HIGHLY recommend you watch that one too.

I agree completely. The Majestic isn't for everyone, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Carrey did another great dramatic turn in it! I think a large part of its appeal for me is because as a student of history I don't think we talk about McCarthyism as much as we should. It's one of those dark episodes of American history that could too easily happen again in some form if we aren't careful. I really like Good Night, and Good Luck for the same reason.

This IS Jim Carrey's best performance as an actor and entertainer. When I watched it as a teen, I was intrigued by the possibility of even having someone being "watched" 24x7. Well, it's not so much a possibility now than certainty since Google and all mobile phones and alexas are hearing and watching you 24x7 (albeit not to someone's entertainment) but yes. This movie stands the test of time, even if the concept doesn't seem so alien NOW. Truly a wonderful movie. Also, Andrew, your reactions are really getting better with time. There is less hesitancy or 'wooden-ness' to your reactions nowadays. Keep it up, man. 👍

I really liked how invested you were. So was i when i saw this movie. I to think this is Jim Carreys best preformance. Please, please, please! Do a reaction to Amadeus. It´s one of the best movies ever made. You will both laugh and cry. Tom Hulce is really good as Mozart but is still not quite as good as F. Murray Abraham in the part of Salieri. One of the best movies of the twentieth century, in my opinion. A brilliant concept brilliantly executed by Jim Carrey, Ed Harris, Natascha McElhone, Noah Emmerich, and Laura Linney. Noah Emmerich (Marlon) has a sort of similar role (best friend / antagonist) in The Americans and does an amazing job with that as well (and won the Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for that role).

I know that Jim said that he is done acting but it'd be a neat idea if somebody can come up with the script and show what his life has become because where you said he's probably the most famous person on the planet. Just as in Jim Carrey's real life just because you're famous doesn't mean you're not lonely and just in his real life you might find the woman of your dreams and her life might end tragically short and and you know he's free to make mistakes and where he had a system that kept him in line that's gone

That boat pierced wall.... is some scene, some moment. Because that's the limit of your eye. Imagine the sky actually does not have stars and it's a boundary? You know, things like that. You can't actually go everywhere on Earth. And worse, there's a reality outside which is being hidden from you, for God knows what reason. Actually, no good reason at all. It's kind of like Eren. But worse, since the world you're living in is fake. And you don't know how fake. Bounded by humans, who are just like you, not because you wanna be safe from zombies. It's betrayal and reality collapsing. Confusion on 2 levels.

I wouldn't judge too harshly how long it took Truman to grow really suspicious of his world. Many of us are suspicious, even paranoid, "by nature" to some degree because we've grown accustomed to our own world of false imagery, the world not being as it appears, and manipulation/gaslighting. Yes, many things around us in the world are illusory, but it's so common and being revealed as a manipulation is likewise so common that we tend to expect things to be false and to look for curtains to peek behind. But remember: in the same way Truman's life was manipulated from the beginning to have a psychological fear of traversing over water, his entire life and personality has likewise been manipulated, likely to discourage suspicious or paranoid aspects of his personality.

This is straight up always going to be Jim Carrey’s best role and best piece of acting he’s ever done. I love his comedy and slapstick and physical humor but this, like you said is on a whole other level. He manages to combine his strengths in those areas that we are familiar with and incredible dramatic acting and that’s not easy for most actors. It’s a shame he kind of got type cast the further he got into his career because he’s so good at dramatic acting and I’ve always noticed that in many of his interviews he sells himself short and doesn’t really know just how talented he is. I love this movie and it will always be one of my all time favorites. Reminds me a little of “Pleasantville”, it doesn’t quite have the same premise but there are a lot of similarities between that movie and this one. The trippiness for sure. Toby Maguire was the protagonist in that one and it’s very underrated, I recommend it if you haven’t seen it. The way Truman slowly starts to figure things out is absolutely chilling. On the subject of him miraculously not figuring it out sooner. When your a kid, you tend to just kind of go with what the adults tell you, and I guess as he grew up he may have noticed weird things but due to all the adults kind of manipulating his world view was in denial of the things he saw. He wasn’t happy, but it was all he had experienced and he didn’t know anything else, at that point it was easier to accept there were just things he wouldn’t exactly be able to rationalize. I think maybe the fact that he was probably well into his 30s ( well, I mean, when we first meet him at least) and not happy with staying in town and probably dealing with burn out from his job and his wife made him a bit more receptive to the obvious oddities that was the world he was trapped in. He wanted out so he was already looking for any reason to leave. I truly hate the idea of a show like this existing, but as a movie concept I love it. It’s incredibly realistic to the direction reality tv could be heading the more and more real people wish for things to be. We all complain about reality shows being too fake and scripted, well, what do you think is next if people catch on to this- yep, we might have a real life Truman Show experience. Someone who has gone through what Truman did would be screwed up psychologically and emotionally for life. His parents weren’t his real parents, his dad didn’t actually die, he was born into a fake life and every major life experience is fake. The sky is fake the sea isn’t vast and endless, he doesn’t know where Silvia is. It’s all very jarring for him and I could see him not adjusting well at all to real life. He could potentially develop a mental disorder, schizophrenia or severe depression and either wish he were back or would probably be paranoid for the rest of his life not knowing what’s real or fearing that his new life is somehow fake. I watch this and it really just feels like a horror film in disguise. Anyway, that was long, it’s one of those films that I just have so many thoughts on though.

Medical Cameo Fact: In an early scene, a bottle of Vitamin D is on Truman (Jim Carrey) and Meryl's (Laura Linney) kitchen table, needed for those without exposure to the (real) sun. What Script Fact: The Trumania bits, where Truman draws on the mirror with soap and acts strange, was completely improvised by Jim Carrey. Carrey and Peter Weir initially found working together on set difficult (as Carrey's contract gave him the power to demand rewrites), but Weir was impressed with Carrey's improvisational skills and the two became more interactive.

I think Jim Carrey has always been a serious actor. One of the earliest movies I saw him in, Earth Girls are Easy, is a cheesy B movie where he plays one of the aliens. I heard he was so serious about the role that he memorized the gibberish they wrote for him to say sound by sound and would ask them to cut if he said any of it “wrong”. His career didn’t really take off until he started doing comedies, but this shows that that serious actor is still there and, given the chance to shine, is really good. Another serious actor that I recall went into comedy is Leslie Neilson, though he was known as a good serious actor when he did. I think his first comedy role was on Airplane! The role was literally him playing comedy seriously, to great effect. He plays a great straight-man. And I think the rest of his career where comedies where he played similar roles in the same way. He was great at it. These are my two cents; your opinion may vary.

You know watching this film we all think it's wrong what is happening to him. It is immoral & yet millions upon millions of people watch the show regardless also the love interest I think her real name is Sylvia is just as bad. Sure she made that phone call saying how wrong this is but remember she was part of this cover up as she was an actress on the show even though her role was as an extra. Your right brilliant screenplay. Unique & original.
