If you are a recreational fisherman in the Gulf of Mexico, the chances are good you heard about the recent announcement of the 3-day red snapper season in federal waters (anything outside of 9 miles from the state's shoreline).
As you can imagine, recreational anglers are pretty upset with the incredibly short 3-day red snapper season. When you consider that the chances of perfect (or even great) conditions during a 72-hour period are slim, this 3-day red snapper season is kind of a slap in the face to recreational anglers.
Unfortunately, there has been a lot of blaming and bad information out there regarding the federal gulf red snapper season, so we went over to Hubbard's Marina to interview Dylan Hubbard to get his take since he has been heavily involved on both sides of the fence (recreational fishing and for-hire fishing).
Make sure to listen in to the full interview as Dylan reveals who's really to blame for these short red snapper seasons along with what we can do about it to make change.
You might be shocked to find out that the infamous "Red Snapper Sea Lords" aren't really to blame...

To both Dylan and Joe, thanks for enlighting us. I have followed this issue for years, and it really disturbs me that politics dominates a "recreation!" I am a CCA member, and a customer of both of your businesses. As a weekend warrior, this is the type of government that really pisses me off. As you said, ARS arn't found off of Johns Pass or Anna Maria. No, I have to go fairly far offshore. Hubbards (or other charter/headboats) is the only way I, and many others like me will ever be able to get to areas that hold Snapper. But even if I could go out with a buddy, I couldn't legaly catch an abuntant species, but that guy over there, because he paid money to some beauracracy can, thats called BS. It's not about science, its about money. If it was about science, and a depleted or endagered species, the environmentalists would slam the door. Err...

Excellent and very informative guys! I'm in Chicago where the governing body for Lake Michigan region announced a reduction in stocking of King Salmon. This is our most prized and coveted fish in the water that generates a couple billion dollar industry here. Aside from charter captains, we struggle to get the recreational fisherman off the sofa to speak up. You are so very right....if we do not mobilize together, the government will overreach and strip us of the resources. I've also seen you on HFF channel and you're the man! One of the most educated and passionate anglers I've seen in a video. Super cool you're so giving of information from fishing to topics like this. Keep it up! 🤘🏽🤘🏽

So, it's time to get Academy, Walmart, Bass Pro Shop, Cabelas, Shimano, Abu Garcia, Penn, Shakespear, Dick Sporting Good, Fields and Streams, all boat makers, all outboard/inboard makers, etc.. to pay their parts and join our fight and form National Anglers Associaton (NAA) (like the NRA). It's their livelyhood too. Without fishermen buy their mechandizes, they will go under. This joint partneship will be much much bigger than the commmercial sector and have more money and resources to do the fighting. Let rally to have a nation wide protest day and let our rep know we vote who are on our side. Tell all the local media too, so they will show up to make new. The squeaky wheel gets the grease . BTW, don't post meathaul or provide survey, any thing they know will be used to against you!

It's not just the Gulf, they're well populated on the Atlantic side also. Video proof - seek out KZbinr "Salty Kayak". NMF needs to conduct studies where the fish naturally congregate - natural or artificial bottom structure, not in the area where even the casual fisherman won't fish because even he knows his odds of catching a fish is remote.. Study Salty's videos, look at the numbers of ARS he releases when fishing and then tell us that the ARS is an endangered species.

We catch our limit in state waters out of Mexico Beach almost every time. Would be more often, but we have to run away from the triggers (closed season, lol). Boats everywhere, catching snappers over a relatively long season. Each season the catch gets better. How can it be that a 3 day season in Federal Waters (with fewer people going out) even touches the population.

+Rob Miller Me too! I began watching Capt. Wilson Hubbard when he had his fishing report segment during the nightly newscast on WLCY-TV Channel 10 back in the 1960's. The Hubbard deep sea fishing boats were sailing out of Pass-a-Grille at that time and his television program really got me hooked on offshore fishing. In later years his program segment was on Ernie Lee's "Breakfast Beat" on WTVT Channel 13. I knew Capt. Hubbard personally over the years and I once asked him what it was like getting up so early in the morning to do his program on Breakfast Beat. Capt. Hubbard looked at me, sighed and said, "It isn't easy!". He was a remarkable man and would be very proud of the dedication and hard work that Capt. Dylan Hubbard is doing for salt water anglers today, following in his grandfather's footsteps.

Hey this video doesn't touch on the point of who votes on these new regulations. There is only one noaa vote out of 12. It is commercial guys and for hire guys that vote on these regulations. The for hire guys are suppose to be representing the Rec guys. did you notice they got 49 days and everyone else got shitted on. The For hire guys were given an option from Commercial and NMFS you go along with the new regulations and you will get 49days and if you guys keep inline there will be IFQ cut out for them in the future. Or go against Commercial and NMFS and be penalized with the same season days as every other person and get nothing. If you look at every council members form the gulf states and the rec members 80% of them are charter guys/for hire. So where do you think for hire stands. Don't try to tell me the states are out of compliance. all of these out of compliance states enacted a snapper tracking system for rec's. To track the fish caught during last years snapper season. Noaa produced numbers out of left field that completely contradicted the numbers that the states gathered. But the only numbers used were Noaa's and NMFS and who agrees with their numbers Commercial IFQ holds.

Thank you Captain for clarifying this information. I always wanted to know who set these rules, but thank you for your honesty...See you soon. In the near future have you all thought about having a shuttle to pick fisherman's up who doesn't have transportation, but wants to fish..Just wanted to ask...lol..Bless you all

hey, loved the video and totally agree with you on the federal mismanagement of our fisheries. how do i get involved with this and related groups if im constantly on the move and no reliable transportation to the meetings as well as the potential odd times of said meetings. and is the $35 membership annual or lifetime. any advice helps as a recreational fisherman who cares about the actual sustainability of our fisheries.

I understand that this is how many people make a living in the state, but you guys are overlooking the quantifiable evidence on the health of this species. The red snapper has a spawning population of only 5 percent. That is critically low. And yes, I know you are at odds with NOAA but they have actual marine biologist studying the species, not anecdotal evidence. Thanks for the video, a great talking point. sero.nmfs.noaa.gov/sustainable_fisheries/gulf_fisheries/red_snapper/overview/

Talking point, no. Truth, yes. If you think NOAA is counting red snapper and believe the numbers they throw out, I have some land to sell you just south of Dog Island. What I say comes from personal experience, not reading or listening to others or sitting behind a desk in D.C. Red snapper numbers have not been this high in modern history, take it or leave it. Don't believe it, fine. Charter a boat and see for yourself. I don't make my living off the Gulf, just fish here about 100 days a year.
@briand7489
@briand7489 7 жыл бұрын
Your individual experience have no bearing on the actual health of the species. The factual biologist who study the fish are the people to listen to. There are a few independent studies that I implore you to review, just google. There are people counting fish (have been for years), they are experts, the government isn't a red snapper controlled cult who are vowed against fishermen, and biomass numbers are not anywhere near there natural level. I hope you can join in on helping to protect our beautiful state; perhaps look at the dead reefs in other parts of the globe as a warning sign.
@Hisslave1
@Hisslave1 7 жыл бұрын
Brian D, it would be nice if things worked that way, but biologists aren't making the decisions or the regulations. Unelected, political bureaucrats make them and they are definitely politically driven. To say individual experience has no bearing is well, untrue. As I said, I fish around a hundred days a year. I have NEVER in 50+ years on the water seen a NMFS boat or employee. You'd think to do all these studies and gather all this information that they'd have to do a little hands on but evidently they don't need any "individual experience" to make decisions. Where do you live and how much experience do YOU have to say that red snapper are not near "natural level"? I find it absolutely amazing that there are so many experts out there that have never even seen a red snapper. Or do you work for NOAA?

Shit dude. You got me, i'm a payed NOAA shill. Inform the police, ill go quietly. But on a more serious note, I do actually live on the coast of Florida and I've seen reds before, even touched one with my pinky. Quite the experience. I hope Hubbard's Marina showed you that a little evidence and explanation goes a long way.
