Hey everyone. I have a 20B 3rd gen RX7. I highly recommend if you are going to do the conversion that you push the transmission back 3 inches and get custom drive shaft. This is because the subframe that people normally use does not allow the engine to be back far enough and the power steering rack needs to move too much. Basically, I had the subframe kit and the car felt disconnected. I spent an additional 3K to move tranny back and it made all the difference. The car felt like stock again and handled way better.

@Chris Farley Both companies have a reputation for low cost, entry-level cars targeting first time buyers.. Nissan launched the Infiniti brand with limited success but remains viable in some markets. Mazda's reputation is definitely on the low-end market and it's attempts at launching luxury brands such as Eunos, efini and Amati have all been failures.

I had a 76 Cosmo in about 1990, fully loaded, power everything 5spd white, red and blue trim work. I was young, had no money, so wished I had it now. My step dad had a early 70's Rx3, it was about as fast as his 65 hypo 289 Stang. I was really into rotaries in the mid 80's in the Silicon Valley. Ron if your reading this, it's John, Scott's friend, summer of 85, San Jose. At any rate, a Cosmo would be would be the Pinnacle for me, not an Rx4 or a Rx7. The only other would be an Rx3 SP. Not that that would be all that, it's just a cool old sports coupe from Japan. John from Noblesville.

Thank You for the video, very informative. I never thought a 20B would be so expensive to have a reliable and powerful car based around one. You are right, the internet make you believe they are grown on trees but that isn't the case at all, very involved and expensive. Even more so if you don't have an RX-7 already...

My dream car is a naturally aspirated 20b swapped fc3s. Since rotary territory is foreign to me aside from what I read in forums and see in videos, I already figured it would be pricey as hell to have a clean and reliable setup. Since this video cleared that up for me, I'll definitely put that idea off until later in life. In the meantime, I'll just stick with an sr20 swap. 😆
@177SCmaro7 жыл бұрын
Swapping engines is more expensive then a lot of people realize. Just swapping a basically stock rebuilt 2zzge and C60 into a Celica GT cost me around 5500-6000 (the cost of the engine, trans, clutch, ect.) and that was doing all the work myself. And that is an engine Toyota designed to go in there.

I have 2 20B converted FD cars and I can tell you it is really cool but truthfully you can make a 10 second 2 rotor on pump and water meth a whole lot cheaper. That being said, the sound of the 3 rotor is intoxicating and will last longer because you run less boost. The torque is also a huge plus. I suggest doweling and running a smaller turbo on the street. I run a BW efr 9180 on water meth and the car blows the tires out in 1-4 gears. I see 15 psi by 3000 rpm.

Original FD (95% stock) owner here. 'If' I were to do a 3 rotor swap (no way would I do it) I would make it NA. Hell, I'd even consider going old school with a carburetor. I don't want 700 hp, but I do want a reliable power plant without the complications and heat of a turbo. I'd be fine with ~300 wheel hp and the advantage of consistent throttle response you get with an NA engine. I like to drive the backroads and the track, not race on straightaways. The stock FD has plenty of power to get you between the turns on public roads. I had a 91 Miata before I traded it for the RX-7 and had a blast backroad bashing with that car! The original 12a and 13b RX-7s were much more simple back in the day! I'm not a big fan of all of this computerized crap. Simple EFI would be fine for me too. Nice video, btw. Thumbs up and subscribed.

To me putting anything but a rotory in a RX is sacrilege. Yes swapping a 3 or 4 rotor into anything is going to be time consuming and expensive, but it's not about the money if you go that route. My dream is to have a 3 rotor RX-8, sure it will take time (I"m fairly young and I need to do a couple things before I can get just spend 30k freely like that), but it would be my ultimate car goal. From my research, LS swaps cost about 20k+ so why just go for it with the extra 10k? I know you can fit a turbo with a 3 rotor into an engine bay. Can you even fit a turbo if you LS swap it?

People have alot money available to be doing 20B swaps into their FD's. I think this happens more in the US than anywhere else. I know alot of people up here don't do 20B swaps. When we attended DGRR this year, there were at least 4 FD's that had 20B's swapped into them. The rest of us were normal 2 rotors but with a variety of people running twins or single turbos. I think you spend alot of money getting a decent single turbo 13B running in the FD. Let alone a 20B. Can't even imagine the amount of fuel you'll be sucking down.

The 20b is such a special engine I don’t get why more people don’t build high compression NA 3 rotors. Plenty of power especially in the glorious top end. Less stress, less complication and a serious weight loss. Light weight sport cars go with light weight power plants. Throw in ITBs and IMO it’s THE perfect set up. If turbo is your thing, building a high compression, low boost yield BIG power and not so unbalanced in power delivery. I drive an S65 M3 with 415bhp stock at 12:1 CR. Introducing just 6 lbs of boost takes output to 625-650bhp. Rotary engines are no different in that way. Mike Vargas is building this exact set up and proving my point. 450whp on 6psi!!! It is the drivers set up for those no just wAnting straight line pulls which is EXACTLY WHAT THE RX cars are. Comment below and let’s shine more like light to the upcoming holy grail RX 13/20b engine setups. High compression is the best way for true well balanced sports cars. I will build an FB soon to Group C Rallye spec. It dominated in its day and will dominate the streets as well over the accepted path of present day low compression high boost lopsided builds. The talent is already available, this fresh idea is all that’s needed teamed up with the rotary heads attention.

How do you know what letter code the engine is? I've found several 20B engine packages for sale through JDM importers, anywhere from $4500 to around $7000 depending on the importer. Also, I've found a 20B swap kit through a company called Defined Autoworks, $1670 if you don't want A/C, and $2070 if you want to keep A/C. All they require is a shortened lower intake manifold so the engine clears the FD hood, and they offer the modification for around $500. Stupid question, but will the stock 13B-REW manual transmission bolt right up to a 20B? Or is there an adapter or any modification needed? This is all still a dream for me right now, as I have yet to find an FD for sale near me for a reasonable price, but I'm just doing research anyway.

The reason as to why they stopped putting rotary engines in consumer vehicles was mainly due to inefficiency, when the gas crisis happened those vehicles pretty much died and 4 and 6 cylinders started their reign into the average consumer car.

The TRUTH about doing any engine swap properly.... The truth is to do any engine swap like a 13b to a 20b properly is going to cost money. While there may be many people successful in swapping in junkyard V8s, jdm honda engines, etc on the cheap; this does not equate to doing an engine swap properly. Any engine swap done properly to the extent to which you are talking about where you tear down the engine first is going to cost you close to $20,000 doesn't matter the engine unless you can do all the work yourself. There are too many skill sets and tools required in doing an engine swap to the extent you outlined for most people to have and be able to perform well. So some work is going to have to be farmed out which will always drive the cost up. I am not sure how aware you are as to the costs of some other engines especially ones built to compete with what would be typical of a turbo 20b build since it appears that an NA 20b swap is an uncommon swap as the 20b swaps are concerned. An AMS built Subaru EJ long block is typically going to cost you about $15k while any Tomei engine is going to cost $15k-$30k depending on the engine. While having an engine balanced and blue printed may be cheaper than buying a prebuilt performance engine from a shop that spends a lot of money into R&D like AMS or Tomei its still going to be about $10k due to the parts and labor. If you have the skill set to blueprint the engine yourself you are only going to save a couple grand on assembly but odds are you are not going to have the skill set or tools required for any machining of parts to properly balance the engine so you still have to farm out work just to have the engine components balanced before assembly.

Another fact you didn't mention is that not all Cosmos came with the 20B. Many (most?) had the 13BREW engine, making the 3-rotor all the more rare, given that the Cosmo was not exactly a car produced in huge numbers to begin with. I lusted over a 20B swap back in the early 00's but reality kicked in and I ended up building a top notch, S6 internals S5 13BT for my FB. Didn't cost too much and 350hp is plenty fine in a 1st gen......plus she's still smog legal.

I know nothing about a rotary engine! Except they can sound cool and run surprisingly well! I came across this video just asking Google what they cost, and damn! For that kind of loot i can build one hell of a dart block small block Chevy! And I've seen the little rotary cars do well in say a no prep drag race, have seen them in many, small and big tire car's, but ya know what? I've never seen one win the whole event, whether at a track or street. Hell 20-30 grand I could build a nasty big block Chevy! That will make more power and gobs more torque! So I'll stick with a good ol American V-8!!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

I’m more of a numbers guy. So my question is what is the total cost of building / swapping a 3rotor into an FD and what is the yearly costs of maintenance of daily driving a 3 rotor. And if you have any information and answers to the same question but for a 4rotor. Please message me back or reply. Thank you

In the UK I was quoted £10,000 for just the block! Brand new of course, but with new turbo, exhaust, inlet etc your talking £20k+ easy. Just can't justify that in my eyes. I went 1jz with mine but if I win the lottery, maybe one day..

as an owner of more rx7's over the past 40 years i know i beg to differ about the status of a simple 20b as a holy grail and insist the 26J 4 rotor is a much more exclusive and expensive motor. but im still big on the 13b and not the other two because rotary engines are about output versus saving weight and those configurations are pricey but also too hefty when adequate power can be easily obtained from a 13b turbo built by someone who knows what they are doing.

Awesome info about the Cosmo. I never knew that. Mazda should have sold them in the USA
@doktorbimmer6 жыл бұрын
*The United States does not regulate new cars by engine displacement as Japan does, in the U.S. taxes are based on fuel consumption and the Cosmo delivering numbers as low as 8.3 MPG it was simply not going to be imported without paying a huge gas guzzler fine and massive penalties for Mazda... a $7,700 dollar tax on a new Lamborghini is nothing... but for a Mazda it spells no chance of selling enough units to turn a profit on importing them.*

*Actually, the truth is all of Mazda's attempts to sell up-market luxury performance cars have failed miserably... the Eunos, Amati and ɛ̃fini brands were all failures and discontinued... the company has refocused on it core business which it has always be known for... small, cheap, entry level models targeted at the first time new car buyer.*

I think this is a good video that tells people a lot about the 20b swap. However, as a very long time Rx7 owner and modifier, I think it is wrong to give people the impression that they can put a 20b in their Rx7 for as little as $20,000. Maybe you could do it, but I have never seen or heard of anyone actually paying anywhere close to as little as $20,000 for the conversion. (I should note that I did the swap in 2006 and have a lot of time and knowledge about them and many friends who have done the swap as well and know what we all spent.) I think a base swap might get done for $30,000, but that's not going to be any 600-700 hp motor. It will be a base motor making 450-500 whp at most. The reason the costs are so high is that the motor costs, say, $6500. The rebuild with good seals and scalloping and balancing the rotating assembly is going to add at least $5,000 and could be $7500. When you add an ECU, like a Haltech or Microtech for maybe $1500-2000 minimum, you also need a $1000 wiring harness and a number of expensive sensors adding another say $500. You may need things like a new trigger wheel -- $200 --and fuel rails -- $300? -- and better Injector Dynamics injectors at maybe $500. Then, you need some smart coils, like AEM's, at maybe $250 for 3 of them. Add a decent turbo for $5000 and an intercooler for $2000. I'll go along with the Hinson subframe with bumpsteer kit for $2-2500. This is all maybe $30,000 and I think it downplays the cost of labor. I have seen 20b builds that go over $50,000.
@KennyatHumble7 жыл бұрын
The word in play is 'minimum'. Yes, a 20B can be done for $20,000. But that's bare minimum. Done it several times. If you know how to build a motor yourself and do the machine work yourself, it's more than possible. Having the ability to fabricate a subframe, manifold, fuel rails, etc. yourself could potentially make it a little lower. 20B: $6500 Subframe: $2000 ECU: $1500 (Microtech includes flying lead harness), and runs off stock dizzy negating your trigger wheel and harness cost. Stock injectors can still be used. Manifolds can be had for under $1000, Turbos, $500-1000. Rebuild: $2500-3500 with proper access to tools. LS Coils are $150-200 for set of 6. A decent intercooler core ~$300-600. Custom fab your own piping. That means you're running a ticking time bomb of a transmission, more than likely a clutch that wont hold much torque, a diff that will explode after a dig hit, etc. These are all bare minimum basic build, not what I would recommend, but entirely possible.
@nk07237 жыл бұрын
gmonsen you're talking about sourcing an engine and then completely rebuilding it plus putting a bunch of aftermarket stuff on it which you don't really need though.
@gmonsen7 жыл бұрын
Where someone is able and willing to do a lot of the work, you can get a 20b in for $20,000. I really was not -- am not -- disputing that and very glad to hear of a newer rotary shop in Iowa. I would just say that what you end up with is going to be pretty crude and won't be what someone might expect of the swap. If you do none of the work yourself and hire a shop to do everything, I think $30,000 is kind of the minimum.
@gmonsen7 жыл бұрын
The only way you put a 20b in a car for anything close to $20,000 is if you do all the work yourself and are happy with a pretty crude and extremely basic swap when done.

That is also my personal preference...(and may be the route I will try to take eventually) Although the 20Bs in cosmos were meant to be turbocharged so they were not really high compression engines. Performance would suffer a lot to run it just NA on street. Once I thought Racing Beat got it right when they put that alcoholic, screaming NA 3-rotor in Furai, shame that car got burned up...-.- Well, quite a few things still needs developing

Why does the orange FD on the dyno have “Rotors Performance Built Break in Tune 18psi -730whp”? I took that video at our 417rotary dyno day with Gaby Skern. I don’t remember meeting anyone from Rotors Performance and we couldn’t get the FD to make a full pull cause of fuel issues. Did they take this car to you guys later on and it eventually put down those numbers?

We weren't known as rotors performance at the time. The owner of the car is a co owner of rotors.
