I am from Brazil and I can say the following: 1) Cariuma calls itself a Brazilian company, but its website is in English and not in Portuguese, which is the language spoken in Brazil. There is no address of his alleged factory on the website and there are no physical stores in Brazil. 2) I have never seen any video or report that shows someone from the company planting a tree in the Amazon Rainforest. 3) I don't skate today, but there is a public skate park nearby where I live and I've never seen a skateboarder wearing a Cariuma sneaker (Cariuma, supposedly, manufactures sneakers since 2019). By the way, I also never saw anyone who doesn’t skate wear these sneakers… 3) I'm not sure why I can't really prove it, but I've heard people say that these sneakers are ordered from a manufacturer in Singapore, after receiving certain amounts of money from their buyers. 4) Despite what I wrote and not having such a shoe, it seems to me to be a good sneaker. Much more expensive than it should be, however.

To be honest, I am not on the Cariuma hype train and do not like the design of the Catiba pro since this is the most generic skate shoe design ever but overall fuck Nike big time, and all other corporate suckers flooding the skate culture. I respect and support only real skate shoe brands and did not care much about the rest. To me - Emerica, Lakai, Etnies, Fallen, Es, even Vans is where skateboarding is.
@AlimDixon3 жыл бұрын
I agree, the catiba pro is definitely a very generic shoe. I'd say me personally I'm not so much a fan of Nike but I like the quality of their shoes if that makes sense. The way Nike came into skateboarding and push all of the skater owned companies out the way was very messed up and their is really little to no justification for that. However the shoes that Nike has made their is no denying that in their factories and the designers of shoes are doing something right the way their making them. The topic of shoe quality and skater owned companies is definitely interesting to look at & I'm probably going to do some vids discussing it in the future. During the era of the original team with Prod, Gino, Brian Anderson, Supa…Looking back I felt Nike SB knew their presence would be polarizing, but they at least utilized their resources to make amazing skate shoes (back then) like the Tre and Tre A.D are by far one of the greatest skate shoes ever made. I feel as their presence become more normal over time though, they began downgrading their quality. Like pushing the Janoski’s and making more generic ass shoes with crap quality. Less cupsole, more vulc. Thinner materials smh… Nyjah’s and Ishod’s shoe are the more recent ones that harkened a bit back to that innovative era.

Alright, when Nike came into the skate industry... 20 or so years ago, it decimated skate owned shoe brands. Es was gone for awhile, they poached a lot of their team, and then they saturated the marketplace very much like Cariuma is doing now. Everyone hated Nike, and really it felt like a hostile takeover. The reason these shoes are worth trying: They actually are really comfortable, have way better insoles than the Blazers (frankly I think they feel like a mix of a blazer and van's old school), and they skate pretty well too. I was surprised and a hater until I put them on my feet. The big difference being their manufacturing and production standards are more ethical than Nike, New Balance, and Adidas, if we're comparing corporate brands that have entered the skate scene in the last 15-20 years. Of the three corporate brands mentioned above, Adidas is actually the only one to have transparent production practices, meaning they allow themselves to be audited by third party entities, and disclose where their materials come from, and how they're made. If anything, having a brand like Cariuma take a chunk out of profits from other skate brands, the production and labor practices might change for the better.
@AlimDixon2 жыл бұрын
I agree with like 90% of what you said. Nike & Adidas definingly weren't the good guys at the time. I wouldn't go as far as saying that they decimated smaller skate brands because the skateboarding scene was changing very rapidly & sporadically at the time. Ethically Nike is definitely not the best company & neither is adidas or any of the corporate company's for that matter. Nike & Adidas broke into the skate market, but they were eventually accepted b/c of the quality of their shoes and the relationships they cultivated while within the community. Today Nike SB is a major contributor in the community and brings good quality skate products like any other shop or brand. Cariuma on the other hand brings such low quality that its worst than most skate shoes and it actually hurts the market from how low quality they are. Thats my main problem with it. You have company that doesn't bring quality product & doesn't really contribute or connect with skateboarding community being presented as this type of "good" alternative for new skaters. In my opinion Cariuma uses predatory tactics to trick people into buying much much lower quality shoes thatn they would find anywhere and I mean anywhere else. Whether it be Nike, Emerica, Adidas, Etnies, or any one else that sells skate shoes. So for me I think about the quality, for Cariuma feels like a gotcha-style rug pool scam for young, new, and / or impressionable skaters that can be tricked into buying the worst of the worst in skate shoes. Right now if you buy any pair of skate shoes from any brand, you would get a certain standard of quality. But now that cariuma has entered the scene, I feel like now skaters have to worry about scam companies trying to beat them out of their money with garbage products. Cariuma in my opinion is making what I consider to be a positive & accepting community build on certain stands of fun and quality a much more predatory & scary place.
@adams.gestwicki52922 жыл бұрын
@@AlimDixon I honestly am blown away by how thoughtful of a response you gave. I will say I honestly can't say that the quality is lower than any other pair of skate shoes I've owned, and this is coming from someone who's 34 and has been skating since they were 11, so I've been around the block. I like my Valllely's and they are really fun to skate. End of the day, Cariuma has chosen a tactic that's very overt, in your face, and impossible to avoid. It definitely has shoved its way into the discussion for better or worse. Predatory may be a bit harsh, but I totally get your point and agree with it. It reminded me to research Sole Technology: Es, Emerica & Etnies. Honestly they do a lot to make sure their manufacturing standards and how they source their textiles is all above the current standard of most bigger shoe brands. Only difference is they don't really throw it in your face that way Cariuma does. I'll probably go back to just buying from them, as I love their shoes (Joslin Vulc with Michelin outsoles are nearly indestructible), and they're doing what they can to be thoughtful about how their shoes are made. Seriously thank you again for the thoughtful dialogue and response. Also your video was balanced with both sides of the argument on what to think about this brand, good or bad.

Sounds like the shit Nike, Adidas, and New Balance pulled back in the mid 2000's- 2010's. So it's cool that they came in and drove many core skate shoe brands out of business, but now that this brand outta Brazil is threatening their market share and stranglehold on the skateboard trends it's uncool. People forget Nike paid P Rod huge money to join and promote their shoes because NO skate shop would carry them. Then they stole Koston from Lakai, Nyjah from DC, and the Janoski unexpectedly blew up and became the largest selling Nike shoe of all time. Adidas did the same thing. I see no difference and honestly I hope they steal a huge profit from those non skate companies that killed core skate shoe brands

Had a pair. These shoes actually rip. They have amazing flick and board feel. They skate like a mix between a cup and vulc. If them being sus is the concern then I feel like comparing them to Nike doesn’t make any sense. Nike is famously capitalistic and terrible when it comes to environmental and human rights issues. They also dropped into skating out of nowhere and drove out core brands. Carriuma is owned by a surfer and a skater. It makes sense that they’d want to fuck with skating
@AlimDixon2 жыл бұрын
I agree, Nike is one the worst companies ethically when it comes to human rights and the did drop out of nowhere into the skateboarding community. I can't personally speak to your experience skating Cariuma, but I am happy you had a experience with the shoes. Unfortunately a lot of people had bad experiences with them as well. I feel that where when Nike came into skateboarding they contributed with the quality of their shoes and the cultural connection that already had and with the new one they worked to make (w/ nike sb dunk). In my opinion Cariuma doesn't bring anything good or on par with any other skate brand. Nike was forced to prove themselves & today they have proven to be a reliable skate shoes similar to any other brand like Emerica, Etnies, Vans, or Es. Cariuma just doesn't contribute much and are actually lowering the bar for skate shoes. To me Cariuma shoes seem almost like a scam to trick people in buying low quality shoes that aren't on-par with the market. Nike being the unethical company that it is brings a certain standard of quality with their shoes that every other skate brand does. Cariuma however has been shown not to do that. Im not saying that people shouldn't skate cariuma, skate whatever you like. From customer experience and market research done by myself and many others in skate community have shown Cariuma to be significantly lower quality product, than what you would find anywhere else. So to relentless promote while knowing that it brings no value, in my opinion thats wrong & dishonorable to do.

If you don’t like them that’s fine. the three reasons you gave were that they looked ugly. Which is a fine opinion. But then you said they don’t look like they were made well. Which doesn’t make much sense at all and you never revisited that. Please tell me why because i have been doing a lot of internet investigations on the quality and they seem like good shoes. Then the third reason you gave was that you didn’t like the company because you felt like they bought there way into skate culture. By “bribing” skaters. Which i guess is a point you can make but then you make a big deal about how nikes make you skate better. Nike is a terrible company. They are the OG’s of buying there way into the skateboarding. And they have done things to actually hurt skateboarding in general. And how can you say that sponsorship is bribery. Skate goat didn’t have a sponsor, now he does. That’s the dream. They also have mike V on their pro team and that dude doesn’t need the paycheck. I think they are just good shoes that a way better for the environment and for the people who make them. especially compared to nike where they are world famous for using child labor and screwing over their factory workers. If just want to stick to your nikes that’s fine but you just sound very ignorant to what you are talking about. And it also just seems very lazy of you to show just a bunch of others people’s videos. Doing that’s fine, but you spoke very little in this 12 minute video where the the two main stars were john hill and skate goat.

I mean, just about everything you said was true. What I was mainly trying to say is that Cariuma seems like kind of a random edition in to the skate industry and especially with having absolutely nothing to do with skateboarding while with Nike, Nike a had a good reputation with athletes and skaters before they integrated (bought their way ) into skateboarding. I just feel like Cariuma was just a really random edition and like it was a little weird how everyone jumped on support so quickly thats all . At the end of the day its really no hate towards skategoat, the company or anyone involved. I do actually want to skate shoes sometime in the near future and do a actual proper review on them. That seems like something you'd be interested in and I'd appreciate if you could subscribe so that way you could see my real opinion of the shoes before and after.

Because news flash, they weren’t a skate company to begin with either.

Nike wasn't a skate company but the products they created were being used for skateboarding. When Nike went into skateboarding they were able to provide a good product by building on the relationship the skateboarding community had with the shoe and through the use previous silhouettes. Cariuma however has zero connection to the skate community and more importantly provide a worse product at the end of the day. For it to be treated as reputable company is doing a disservice to the community. Its not a matter of preference because cariuma is much lower quality than even some of worst skate shoes. Pretty sure sponsoring a skateboarder is not bribery
@AlimDixon3 жыл бұрын
As skaters we wouldn't see it as bribery but from an official standpoint it can be. All sponsorships technically are bribery. I understand what your saying but the real question is at what point is it a sponsorship and at what point is it bribery. When a company needs the sponsorships thats when I'd say it becomes bribery; when its more one sided than mutually beneficial. For example Cariuma would be nothing with out Skategoat or Gustavo Ribeiro while companies like Adidas and Nike don't need their sponsorships as much. For example adidas doesn't need Chris Chann to promo them, their sales are not directly influenced by Chris Chann while I believe Cariuma's are directly influence through the promotion of these deals. This is definitly something interesting I want to touch on in the future and if this is something you'd be interested in, I encourage you to subscribe.

@@AlimDixon i dont think even from an official standpoin . A sponsorship is when you pay them with your product or any type of currency for them to promote it
@Blanktarn Жыл бұрын
@@Anatoliyy12 when you get sponsored you are expected to represent the company in a good way. If you want to keep that sponsorship income or amenities, talking bad about that company is certainty not the way to go about it.

I wasn't trying to clickbait, its just in that photo its Gustavo Ribeiro and he looks a lot like Jamie Foy, so I mixed em up by accident.

So basically, you don't understand how business works. Businesses PAY people for their TIME and INFLUENCE to PROMOTE their PRODUCT. You can't really expect to prosper by asking everyone to do thing for free. The only time a lot of these people seem to be doing things for free is when someone like yourself basically uses their content to add length to his video and explain things because he can't. I don't really see very much of your own content in this video. I mean the only real opinion you have in your video is you saying that Nikes make you skate better. It's a little ridiculous because you don't even explain how they make you skate better. You don't speak about how they fit, the materials, the durability or anything that could or would make a person see better in them. When you say that maybe it's a Nike thing? You mean... Like magic? Come on bro. Are you just salty that cariuma didn't hit you up and pay you? I really don't have much of an opinion on cariuma, I was just trying to find out exactly what all the hype was about and how they started and I somehow clicked on your video first and now I'm wasting even more of my time by commenting. You have to have more of an understanding than what you're putting out in this video. Even if someone is on Flow for their local skate shop. They are getting "paid" with decks, wheels, bearings, griptape Etc come on man. Have you never done an English paper? This is how the world Works brother!

I understand what your saying. I don't have any problem with skaters being paid with money or skate products to promote things, I feel that simply when someone is paid to promote a bad product that it is unethical and crosses than line between brand sponsorship and bribery. I feel it becomes bribery when you actively convincing someone that a bad product is good to their detriment. My problem isn't with skaters being paid for their work, I feel that is 100% good for skateboard. My problem is with bad actors like Cariuma exploiting the fact these skaters need get paid by using their influence to bribe them and hence forth make a quick buck off of selling skaters bad shoes. As for the whole Nike thing, it definitely isn't magic or nothing, I could've maybe went into a little more depth. The way nike makes their shoes they make with very light and firm material that kind of blend with your feet providing great board feel, while it kinda off blends to your feet. I simply noticed that Nike skate shoes that I've skated (Nike SB Blazers) feel much more natural than other shoe that I've skated. I'm not that Nike is the best or anything however out off all skate shoe companies we all can agree that if anyone had the money or resources to perfect the technology it would be Nike. I am going to do a part 2 sometime soon wear I actually buy the shoes and review them myself. So if thats something you wanna see you should subscribe.

This is heavy handed commentary. Slow-mo's on words? Come on. Why? The founders are young skaters looking to provide a product that 1. Doesn't exist and 2. Is willing to CHANGE. Why not cut the dramatics and get down to an evidence based review irregardless of the fact that capitalism breeds new businesses. Its not like there a huge, Boomer shoe Company pretending to be something they're not...?!
@AlimDixon2 жыл бұрын
Well, the main problem people have with them is they bought there way into the scene, which isn't inhearlty bad but Cariuma simply isn't a skate company. So there basically high-jacking the industry. So its not so much thats its unethical its more that what their doing is concidered immoral and indecent. However I am working on saving up some money so that I can buy a pair and review them myself sometime soon.
