I think Melo's problem was his view about winning. Chauncey Billups even said that Melo cared more about his own stats than seeing the team win. Looking back, Melo's 40 point performance came mostly with his team losing games.

It is tho lol he masks it very well but completely lost me at the end with the Demar angle. Melo was for sure “one of those guys” and for sure a legit 1a. The closest thing he had to a complete roster in 2009 he took a prime and eventual champion kobe to 6 tough games. That Denver team would for sure have beaten Dwight and them. That’s how close melo was to being a champion with a good but not great roster.

Melo is the classic number 2 option forced into a number 1 role imo. With a Phil Jackson-esque coach to keep his ego in check, I think Melo could’ve been a Pippen-type player. But somehow GMs think they have the guy as their number one when they SO CLEARLY do not. Examples in the modern NBA: Trae Young, Demar DeRozan (for a while, ik he finally got traded), Zion Williamson, Devin Booker, Jimmy Butler

College basketball was still the barrier for success. Kobe and T Mac were the outliers. After Melo won the chip at Syracuse I personally thought he'd be way better at LeBron. In retrospect it was silly but you're right a lot of us felt that way in those days

At best I always saw he could be a more consistent Glenn robinson. We never saw anything like lebron but we knew he was legit. I'm from PA originally and we just always viewed college as the stepping stone to the NBA. FAR from a hater man. I did forget about Garnett, he was a star before those 2. Where I'm coming from is there were so many more failures than future HOF'S coming straight from high school. Tyson Chandler, Eddie Curry, D Miles just to name a few. I don’t think people realize that basketball is a job for these players. Sure, you can have a legacy and be remembered for winning championships, or you can make millions of dollars on mid or bad teams where you can get your shots up and keep your value high. People give melo hate for choosing the money and his own personal stats, but that’s how you get the big contracts. At the end of the day, he’s made millions on millions of dollars to play a game most of us stopped playing competitively after high school at the latest.

Regarding the “All-NBA” thing, Melo played in an era where he had to compete against the likes of LeBron & KD both early in their careers and into their prime years. There’s only 3 spots for an “All-NBA” Small Forward and they both played Melo’s position. So yea, considering the fact that he’s going up against 2 Top 5 SF for over a decade straight, most ppl would struggle to make an “All-NBA” team for Small Forwards at all. Let alone 1st.

Only shot 44%, and they kept the ball out of his hands with ginobli and Parker both having higher usage rates then him. Ginobli shot 36% from the field he only had it going from the 3 that series and the line. Lebron couldn’t outlay tony Parker that’s what it was. Bron had a 42% TS, splits of 36/29/69, and barley averaged over 20 with 22 a game with a 36 usage %. He’s why they lost

I’m 31 years old. I saw Carmelo’s professional career from start to finish. I don’t know how to explain it but I just never gravitated towards Melo that much as a basketball fan. I always thought that he was kind of overrated. Yeah he could score that ball but so could Kobe, so could Dirk, so could KG, so could LeBron, so could DWade etc. What was his overall impact on the game? What did all of his scoring do for Denver and New York? Hardly anything. Idk, largely overrated player. Personality wise he seems like a great and magnetic guy but as a player, he was one dimensional and overrated to me.

He def did in 09 and if he wasnt press to go to NY during the trade deadline in 2011 causing them to gut the team instead of him just waiting 5 more months to join a more complete version of that knicks squad , also he had a chance to go to Chicago in 2014 with Butler , Rose and Pau …so he’s had chances to have solid teams and he’s had solid teams , this legendary scorer but only has 1 scoring title and no seasons averaging 30 …. Mid defender , good rebounder and hell of a mid range scorer but he’s just not as good as people think he was
