Thank you so much for this. This is honesty, and this is severely missing from the hardline pro-official government position channels out there. It is much better to have this type of frank discussion with people who genuinely care about China than to retreat from these sensitive topics and cede the narrative to those that want China to fail. Please keep being honest when your channel explodes in popularity.

I second everything you say but one caveat I would add is that I think she is breaking Chinese law by posting this on KZbin because she had to use a VPN to get outside the Great Firewall. I do not claim to know all the ins and outs; perhaps she filmed, departed China and posted. Just to be paranoid for a moment, it is also possible that she has authorization from CCP to post because she generally takes a pro-CCP view. By posting this, I am asking Siming Lan to indicate whether she is authorized to post by the government and whether she receives any compensation from the government. Your videos are excellent and much better than typical Chinese posters on KZbin, particularly those with pro-CCP agenda's who are just terrible. You are not terrible; you are reasonably well informed and argue a position reasonably which is why I feel the need to ask about how you are able to post to KZbin and how you are compensated. Sorry, but I've dealt with too many Chinese netizens who are utterly incapable or unwilling to try and understand alternative views. That ability is why I'm intrigued by your posts.

Am I right to say you seem to be offering reasons to justify the big big mess caused by the CCP in handling the COVID situation. The biggest take from your video is no one dares to tell or say the Truth , right , local governments dare not to the CCP , citizens dare not fearing punishment from government . Ironically , why a majority of chinese citizens still think the CCP is legitimate even when corruptions are still rather rampant in the CCP

Thoughtful video on a very complicated situation. Hopefully the demonstrations have had the desired effect and the government addresses the concerns of their citizens promptly. A more targeted approach to as you describe in happening in Guangdong seems to be effective in limiting spread- hopefully this approach can be applied throughout the country. I doubt there would be many in China that would support dropping of all restrictions allowing the virus to spread throughout the country unchecked. This would be disastrous for those at risk (e.g. the elderly) and overwhelm your health system. Enjoy your videos - Keep up the good work!

I think she meant the government has more than one priority. During the pandemic, if breaking the zero Covid record, some low level ccp officials could lose his job. This became a bigger priority than keeping people having an income during the pandemic. China has no social safety nets and even don’t have a food bank!

Agree that Covid is an unusual beast to conquer and no one model provided a comprehensive solution. As someone who worked actively and closely in an ICU medical setting, I can agree that it was difficult at times especially when quarantine and lockdowns only allowed some patients to say goodbye to their families using a tablet, before being placed on a ventilator awaiting the inevitable. Yes, so becoming emotional while discussing this topic is understandable but you persevered and that's commendable. Nice video. Keep up the good work.

no, the 2 term limit is actually fairly new just like in US, and it actually doesn't apply to the presidency but the chairmanship. there are many US president who serve for more than 2 terms. while I oppose the removal for the 2 term limit, that in itself is not an argument that he does not deserve his office. you have to measure him by what he has done, his pro heartland policy may not be desired by everyone, but to the people who need it, and depend on it, this is a critical issue, and keeping that group if people who are most in need, have hope in the future is keep to maintaining stability in the society. have you wonder why some american are robbing shop like it justified? because they feel they are being left behind, without xi unusual policies for the heartland, China would have deevolved into the same madness that plague capitalist economy. so this actually allow the capitalist economy in china to be preserved because everyone feel that they have hope. you can never make everyone successful, but if you can give hope, people will persevere.

Really interesting, thank you. Having lived in various countries in Asia for a long time, it has helped me learn a lot about western culture as I reflect more, as well as of course the cultures I’m experiencing first hand. I’m able to understand reasons why things are they way they are, like the way local authorities in China have to answer to the central government, which leads to failures like the over the top sustained lockdowns. But I’m also perhaps hamstrung by a western way of thinking which is to react “my god, what’s wrong with these people!” which makes me jump straight to questioning the entire political system etc etc. This ability to question, seeking fairness, justice etc, is ingrained in me and is one of the great things about the west. However, this can also be a huge society weakness (which is on display everywhere with anti-maskers, nut jobs, right wing extremism etc etc). The Confucian sacrifice for the collective can produce super safe societies like South Korea, Singapore etc… yet it can then also lead to cruel regimes like North Korea, CCP etc - which would be impossible in the west. Basically, both societies have a lot to learn from each other and through understanding can achieve greatness for humanity.

While Asian regimes may exhibit cruelty towards their own populations, they rarely extend such cruelty to other nations. In contrast, Western governments, like the USA, have a history of brutalizing and oppressing third-world countries and their citizens over the course of decades.

I live in Xi'an. You could feel the frustration building up in the months leading to the protests. I believe China did great the first two years of the pandemic, however you could quickly begin to see there was no exit strategy and that was concerning/frustrating for many people who were constantly getting locked down, losing income and watching their savings dwindle. Accusations that business people who had invested in nucleic acid testing companies were bribing gov workers to keep the lockdowns continuing were also rife. Again, this lead to a lot of frustration and resentment amongst the people. Thankfully it came to an end, but I remember Xi'an for one month or two pretty much came to a standstill. Me and my family tested positive and recovered early on, so the plus side was that for one month after this the shopping plazas and other places of interest were practically dead and you didn't have to queue for anything. Sadly, the morgues were also overran and many vulnerable people passed away. Towards the end, the lockdowns delayed the inevitable. 😞

4:52 Problem for the Party is that the best solution -- importing and distributing Western vaccines which were available and actually effective -- would be symbolically seen as "surrender", and the CPC considers this a fatal threat. Better to just let it rip through the unprepared population, disappearing all the resulting deaths, ignoring the illness and hospitalization statistics, and quietly tracking down and arresting the protesters after (all of which is exactly what happened over the following months). The problem for the CPC is that the right thing has become suicidal for the Party. Nowadays state media pushes for hate against Japan -- even though their own normal radioactive discharge is far more toxic -- to distract from the fact that Party policies have led to the Chinese Yuan becoming almost as worthless as Chinese real estate, both becoming liabilities that practically all Chinese subjects own without alternative.

Great work telling it straight and truthful without masking the underlying issues. I am from Singapore, and we have lockdowns too. However, as the vaccination rates goes up and with the Omnicon variant less dangerous although quite contagious as well, the government now decided that it is safe to start opening up. Otherwise, the economy and the people's livelihood will suffer greatly. This calculated risk management policy allowed some relaxation on public activities but still require all to wear the masks on public transport and hospitals, etc. All my family members were vaccinated and had a second booster vaccination. All of us also got infected by Covid. We did our own test ourselves using the kits that were provided by the government and when we tested positive, we do self-isolation in our own homes and carry on the test ourselves every day, until it returned a negative result. Because we are vaccinated before, our symptoms were rather mild. Basically, I have a sore throat and a slightly higher temperature, but other than this, I am generally fine. The same goes for my family members as well. Personally, I supported China lockdown during the first phase of the pandemic, otherwise, things would have been pretty serious with massive deaths and healthcare system being overwhelmed. However, now that most of the world has started to open up, and if more people in China are vaccinated and the current Omnicon variant is less dangerous, perhaps, it's time to reassess the situation. It may be possible to take a calculated risk to lessen the severity of lockdowns or otherwise, the people's frustrations and their economic sufferings will grow. Understandably, every country's situation is different, and I have faith that the Chinese government will do the right thing. Stay strong and healthy.

Before you go saying that the Singapore way is better than what China is doing, you need to understand the Geopolitical long term thinking of the CPC. I am sure that they have discussed all these issues before making their decisions, because they are basically pragmatic people. Maybe we need to understand the underlying principles they practise in their decision making.

@@adamiskandar5107 You got me totally wrong! I am merely giving an example of what we have done here in Singapore, and in no way suggesting that China should follow suit. I know full well that very country has a different set of conditions and will make policies that suit their unique circumstances. In fact, this is what they are doing right now. Adjusting as necessary. That is why in my last sentence, I said that I have faith that China govt will do the right thing. Perhaps, I wasn't too clear in my articulation of that.

It is dumb for China to make a law banning youtube, but it is very easy for Chinese people to access youtube and this specific law is rarely enforced. The point is that there is a lot of misinformation about China on western media, and there are many Chinese people who feel obligated to speak up for their country. We could also say "what's the point" to western countries banning Russian media and ghosting people's comments, but I'm sure we are all very much aware of western hypocrisy.

It's ironic that China is ruled by an 'supposedly' Communist government on a 'fake' socialist platform but offers 'zero' social welfare. They've changed and mutilated our Chinese characters and even started a revolution to destroyed our Chinese culture. For the past 70 years, the CCP continually disgraced and tainted the name "China" so far as I am concern, the only China I recognize is the one across the Taiwan strait.

I think if the system works as you say then it becomes the duty of the Central Government, to some extent at least, to help out the Local Governments in its efforts of dealing with local problems. this is an interesting and unique video in that it isn't expressly pro or anti china policy and is what i would like to see more of. however, it obviously is very difficult for you to present. with that in mind, what would interest me is the boring middle class. not the 40% in poverty - i'm sympathetic, but poverty looks the same as ever - and not the 10% elites - they also look the same everywhere - but that middle 50% who bounce up and down with different events beyond their control. eg the way you described your govt in the south versus elsewhere. it may still be a lot and maybe not entertaining for anyone else, but it might be if you include short asides like that in the future.

It's likely that many chinese people will be thinking "Is that how it is now? Well, the 'heavenly mandate' had to pass into other hands. Okay, who's strong enough to bully us now? Let him come forward and we'll manage". Emancipation isn't as easy as one might think. It's a question of mentality, and that requires much more than cultural lessons. You only have to look at the Chinese students who are thought to be free of illusions after a stint in the West, only to discover that they are completely impervious to Westernisation. In a way, it's reassuring: some people think they're getting results thanks to modernity, but don't understand its philosophical underpinnings, despite what they say. The lines of Hobbes, Locke, the scholastics and even Confucius remain no more than lines and principles to be known (by heart there too...?) but do not infuse, leaving them blind to certain realities that ensure an inner transformation. So the fruits of modernity can only be bitter or insipid, because they are merely material and still material. The strong powers are often unable to accept that free societies are not weak. It is extremely difficult - not inconceivable - to conceive that a society of free men can compete with a society that has been turned into an instrument of power with no regard for its humanity. Imperial Japan has had bitter experience of this, and today Russia is astonished that little Ukraine dares to resist it and has so far given it a beating, while receiving only crumbs of military aid that is always late and so little by little... I hope that the Chinese will soon be protected from their leaders in the future and from the imposture of the Party-State, in view of the USA.

Dude, you do know that China counts covid deaths differently from the rest of the world? The world count covid death even if you have a slight bit of covid detected in the person's body at the time of death. China only counts if the person had covid and died of respiratory. If China had follow the world's definition, I'm very sure it would lead as #1 in terms of the covid death counts. I'm very frustrated since this is CCP attempting to cover the true numbers to their citizens and the world. It is history repeating it itself since it bring back memories of the disaster cultural revolution. Millions of people died and government is too ashamed to admit any faults at the time. This "saving face" aspect of Chinese culture needs stop. It just lead to sweeping problems underneath a rug until it gets too big and explodes in everyone's face.

First let me say what an absolute delight it is to listen to your beautiful English. I find your reflections of a philosophical nature, where you draw from your extensive reading also a great pleasure. As regards the lockdowns, I would like to share that everywhere they were tried, it was a disaster, and made things much worse. In countries such as Sweden which did not have lockdowns, health impacts did not suffer, in fact, they seem to have been in many ways better in the long run. China's draconian implementation of lockdowns was also a disaster for China in the diplomatic sense. The fear of the Chinese model increased greatly as a result. I would love to see China prove to the world that it respects its great culture, and the intelligence of its own people. You are a particularly shining example of that intelligence and high level of culture.

4:22 "I don't know what that suggests" ... but then I don't know what you're trying to say here. This part about student voices sounds out of place in the picture you're painting, it sounds like a bit of extra info but without the intent to contribute to a point you're making down the line.

Being a Communist in origin country, China is closest to the idea of prosperity for everyone than any other country. Apparently even in China, the government and social system has not advance the concept of prosperity for everyone far enough to deal with social catastrophes yet. In any region or city or town in China during the lock-down, the people that are being hit the hardest economically are usually the poorest people. The local government are still too poor to be able to help the poorest people by themselves. But they could have organized the richer people and get them to donate money to set aside an emergency food supply to endure the lock-down in each local region. The government and richer private citizens need to work together to make society run better. The Chinese government need to educate all Chinese people that they need to cooperate and work together to help each other. One important concept that all Chinese people need to understand is that if you are successful economically, you have a social responsibility to lead and help your people. You need to work with the government to further enhance society. If you forsaken this duty, the government should take away your privilege to be in the position to be economically successful and let someone else fulfill that position. In America, there are many rich people. The USA government has a large budget to do whatever it wants. However, the system is not set up to work together to continually strengthen and enhance its economy. So the rich people only care about getting richer and to exploit the government system to make even more money. And the system is set up so that the government do not take leadership to enhance the economy. This lack of leadership and coordination between the rich private sectors and the powerful government is the downfall of the American system. The people are brainwashed to accept the American system as is and to not want to change it. However, China's government is evolving and is seeking the best way to govern itself. Hopefully, China can learn and do what the rest of the world cannot do. Hopefully, there is enough pride, love, and unity in China to prove to itself that it can do what is best for its people and the world and be the best of humans that human beings can be. Can the Chinese people rise to the challenge and set an example for the world and show what the best of human beings can be?

@@davecook8378 Wikipedia gives the following explanation in the section "Friedmann equation in popular culture" : Several students at Tsinghua University (CCP leader Xi Jinping's alma mater) participating in the 2022 COVID-19 protests in China carried placards with Friedmann equations scrawled on them, interpreted by some as a play on the words "Free man". Others have interpreted the use of the equations as a call to “open up” China and stop its Zero Covid policy, as the Friedmann equations relate to the expansion, or “opening” of the universe Now that makes Sense . Without that knowledge it would be Just plain weird... ;-)

First, let me say that your videos are very informative and you are doing a great service explaining the Chinese view, which could help lower tensions down 🙏. At the beginning of your video, when you explained that in the Chinese ideology one is expected to sacrifice for the greater good, in my opinion, is the root of the ideological difference between China & the democratic west which causes great fear in the west, there are essentially 2 ways to care for the greater good, one is based on the idea that the country can sacrifice individual rights for the greater good (e.g the Socialist Communist way) and the second is that by looking after the rights of individuals you eventually care for the greater good (e.g the Democratic way), the west had a very bad experience with the first approach e.g the Soviets & the National-Socialists, therefore losing individual rights is a big no-no in the west.

Well it’s not my place but i think this zero covid policy is a waste, as covid is not a big treath to life.. the people who died from covid are mostly people who would have died of something else anyhow which is why there is no exess mortality whorthy to speak of. Ofcourse critesizing China especially for this because their means have been whit more force isn’t fair, as the overreaction to covid was global. but it was verry unfortunate for all of us and the chinese people who don’t get welfare compansations especially. I hope this will not happen again.

Thank you for the video. I am an American who lived in Taiwan/China for 19 years. For the first ten years I lived there I thought I came from a superior culture, then one day I realized that the Chinese culture I was living worked much better than the society I came from. The society I came from was filled with crime and violence and the government was fighting two useless wars. In Taiwan, I lived in a very calm, peaceful society where people respected each other and were very friendly and helpful. After returning to the USA I was very disappointed about how they write stories about China. I think western journalists who visit China don't know anything about it so they use cheap tricks and write anti-Chinese propaganda. I Would like to know more about the meaning of the protesters holding up blank paper signs and the mathematical formulas. I suspect the western journalists didn't really know so they made up stories that Americans would believe.

Hi Siming, My son presently lives & works in Mexico and like China - if you want to eat you work, and there is no welfare system that's got your back - they just did it hard ie no Lock-downs, and have come through as well as many other countries, and they haven't had their economy destroyed by lockdowns either. We in NZ are now in a recession largely because of the lockdown mentality - of closing the borders, making people isolate & crippling businesses. The Govt sent us further into debt by borrowing & giving out huge amounts of money to individuals and companies hit hard because of their lockdown policy - so we have some understanding of what the Chinese people have been going through, and that the true cost is unfortunately going to be with us for many years to come. Maybe I should add here a thank you to the Scientist who made the COVID 19 Virus - it was just what the World needed - NOT
