Recently, news of CT scanners being used to X-Ray Pokemon packs has taken the community by storm. This new technology allows users to see the cards inside of packs and other sealed products. Opinions have been mixed, with some some suggesting this will improve the hobby and others treating it as a doomsday scenario for Pokemon collecting and investing.
In this video, I wanted to analyze the probable short-term and long-term implications of CT scanning Pokemon products. Let's discuss!

My friend in the game grading industry said that they have been able to do this for years to confirm contents of sealed products. I think they were more looking for the shapes of game/manuals, I'm sure someone noticed they could also see shapes of text/print.

Great TA, I was going to make a video on this, but you've done it. The only thing I'd argue is you're missing out on the mystery, which is a large part of opening those big chase cards.

I thought I addressed that in the long-term effects. Scanning runs against the spirit of trading cards and the fun of collecting and opening packs. Also, if all the hit packs are identified and resold at massive premiums, few people will have any opportunity of even having a CHANCE to open one. Thanks for the kind words by the way!

Not yet, and there are some highly reputable sellers out there who will preserve the integrity of sealed vintage as long as possible. In the long run though, I suspect you're right.

As much as people will trust the big reputable names in the hobby, none of them have massive inventors of sealed vintage cases, they will never be able to verify anyone who sold them the boxes hasn’t tampered / searched these boxes prior to them buying and authenticating them. (Unfortunately)

Do you think Pokemon will add something to the pack wrapper in future sets to make them unscannable?

I don't enough about the technology or what materials (besides lead) that could reasonable prevent scanning. Personally, I don't think Pokemon has an incentive to change packaging. It would be costly in a number of ways: new materials, research and development, added packaging weight, etc. Not to mention that scanning will push more people to buy directly from Pokemon rather than resellers.

If they could adopt the peelabe Ditto sticker approach for all the holos to either render CT scan ineffective or confused. It’s the metallic nature of the holo that makes the shadow stands out in CT scans, I truly feel the Pokémon company, Upper Deck etc will invest card printing tech to prevent the scanning/scamming😂

Wild - I never would've thought about there being a CT Scan market and a new sub-group of collectors that only collect CT scanned packs/product. I'd be skeptical of any pack sold with a 1st Ed Base Set Charizard though as anyone that would send the pack for scanning and finding out that a Charizard was in there would likely crack that pack and send it to PSA/BGS/CGC for grading

Yes and no. Yes because you can say this pack has this card in it guaranteed, however it'll likely be near impossible to sell as it's likely to be assumed to be a swapped pack.

Idk how anyone could trust a “company” scanning your pack. What if theres something in there worth 100k for instance. What’s going to stop them from swapping that pack out for another? Absolutely nothing

Very well put together points for the pros and cons! I think modern is safe until it is no longer modern. I also think if CT scanning market becomes saturated and cheaper, that I would effect modern. A middle man service is 100% needed to to oversee the process.

A simple fix , remove serial numbers from packs and boxes ,replace them with a simple authentic logo , who will send in their product without knowing tha they won't get the old switcheroo done on them. But one tging i will say is its not hard to purchase a ct scanner and the ct scanners them selves will be made more available to consumers specifically for this amd people will just be be doing it for free to there own products

Nobody will be paying 200k for the experience. I think the value would be 20k like a PSA 9 or else just a little above it.

The pack scanning still costs $75. The $15 is an additional charge for those who don't want to mess around with the software or don't have a compatible computer. Apparently, they will analyze the images for you and provide the relevant ones.

Encapsulation won't do anything, they could just crack it out. I think if the pack is scanned they need to hole punch the back flap or something like that, so potential future buyers know it's been scanned.

Sadly, there's no way anyone who would use these services would go for that.

The encapsulation process would allow scanned packs to be traded/sold with certainty of the contents. The QR Code on the label would link to the CT image database. Those who want to open the pack would have to then crack the case. Eventually, I expect loose packs would be assumed to be "scanned" and earn significantly less money when sold. Just like loose packs now are assumed to be light if they don't include a weight disclosure. There would be no incentive to crack scanned packs at this point, since the market would devalue them. Thinking long-term here.

Of course, the BIG drawback is this would pressure everyone to scan and encapsulate their packs, if they want to participate in the sealed market . . . which is unfair and unfortunate.

All it means is that with older packs you have to now not only assume they were weighed but assume they were scanned. And to assume the seller is lying at all times

Unfortunately, I don't think this will result in more cards being opened and enjoyed. If anything, it will incentive people to not open most packs, boxes, and cases (no hits) and instead play hot-potato with unsuspecting collectors as the final beneficiaries.

Agreed! That's why I think each holo will have it's own price range between the PSA 9 and PSA 10 prices for each specific holo. Probably not getting a PSA 10, but people like to gamble on the best-case-scenario and enjoy the risk-taking experience.

Wrong, scanning can pinpoint centering on the cards as well. You can narrow it down quite a bit what type of grade you can expect. Wish all you youtubers actually took time to research topics before just putting out content to make few $$

@@t-raytrades8451 Have you seen the images? There is no way the condition could be accurately assessed from those scans. Subtle dots of edgewear will be imperceptible, same with holo print lines. These are the more common issues than centering. Even if the centering was reliably determinable, the condition will still be uncertain.

The kid who shined the spotlight on scanning couple of weeks ago, has scan clear and clean enough to show centering to pinpoint. Yes you are correct that centering is not the only thing that goes into grading but it’s pretty important one. Not only that your outlook in the technology to stay at stand still and not get better on how good the scans will get is either you being short sided or just being purposely ignorant to it. More so, the company at center of this scanning thing is now offering $15 scans, it was in their website few different times in past 24 hours with different information on how the $15 scans work so your argument that it’s not bad because it’s not affordable is irrelevant as the cost to end user will be affordable sooner than later as the $15 scans are already being advertised. I generally like your content, but please be responsible in downplaying this issue, unless you have already cashed in a check then it’s understandable you making an argument for the company while still trying to show your being neutral.
