Thanks so much for sharing this. Parker only thought Elvis was his golden egg. He ruined everything that Elvis was interested in. If only Elvis would have replaced Parker after the army, of course Elvis didn't realize the truth yet. Parker just kept deceiving Elvis over and over all the way until his death. Elvis will never be forgotten, and will continue to be loved by millions and millions forever. The only reason Parker is remembered now is because of Elvis, otherwise Parker, as Elvis says in the film "You phony no good piece of trash".

I blame his so-called manager for the last few years of his life being fraught with disappointing shows, prescription drug abuse and the king's obvious boredom with the same old songs performed in the same old venues. Elvis was a first class human being and a star in every aspect of the word yet his career was mismanaged which ultimately killed him much earlier than if he was better taken care of. Just my humble opinion for what it worth after the fact. Much love to all Elvis fans out there!

In addition as to how Elvis Presley died too soon at the age of 42 in 1977. This is also why I feel sorry for the late Elvis Presley. The man who discovered Elvis and made him a star, Col. Tom Parker, was an illegal immigrant from the Netherlands and did not have a passport. So in addition to being under very tight control by Col. Tom Parker, that is why Elvis was never able to fulfill his dream of doing overseas concert tours! I think Elvis should have hired some lawyers to threaten Parker with deportation to replace him, and then should have gotten himself a new manager.

@@randyharris3175 As I said before, because of how Parker was an illegal immigrant, Elvis was never able to do overseas concert tours abroad, Parker also did not allow Elvis to act in very good movies such as Midnight Cowboy and the 1977 movie, A Star is Born, and had Elvis under very tight control in so many other ways. If Elvis dismissed Parker, had gotten himself a new manager who would let Elvis make his own decisions, Elvis would have been able to tour overseas, star in the films of his choice, and make his own musical artistic decisions, and with a new manager, Elvis may have even played at Woodstock.

Hank Snow, Parker's first act he later dropped and portrayed in the film, was legendary in his own right. He had his biggest hit about 4 years after Parker dropped him and had a long string of hits spanning three decades. Dying in his mid 80s married to his high-school sweetheart. Lisa Marie Presley was in tears during the premiere of the new movie, believing this was the first time Elvis' life and career was depicted in a much accurate way on film. If Vernon Presley (Elvis' dad) had become Elvis' manager rather than Col. Parker (by the way, that's van KI-UK, not "van KOOK"...forgive me, this rather uneducated presenter often butchers pronunciations), he would've played a much kinder role in contrast to the Colonel.

It's so sad that Elvis missed out on so many opportunities just because he had bad management. I still don't understand how one man can have so much control over a star. I don't get why nobody stood up to him. Needless to say, Parker was the worse thing to happen to Elvis. Best solution was to have reported him to the authorities or at the very least have investigated him before hand to have some sort of leverage over him to control him or just have him deported back to his country to face the law. I feel like a lot could have been done to prevent him from ruin Elvis's professional career and maybe could of kept Elvis alive longer without him in the picture. I had no idea Elvis didn't want to marry Pricella... Wow.. This put's a new impression on the love story all together. Completely see things differently now. A major theme in the recent movie, “Elvis,” is, “Colonel Parker bad man.” For those who do not who Parker was, he was Elvis’ manager from a little after Elvis’ discovery to until his death. A known claim is that Parker took great advantage of Elvis, being more concerned for his own welfare, in the form of money, than Elvis’ welfare in the form of same and, more importantly, in the form of mental and physical health. In contrast to what the movie portrays, Sonny West, Elvis' friend and personal body guard, a member of the “Memphis Mafia,” had nice things to say about Parker. During a presentation that he gave (Up Close & Personal with Sonny West) after the passing of both Elvis and Parker, he said, "But Colonel, to make a bad decision with all that he had to make ... I'm going to tell you something. I'll tell you this and I mean it from the bottom of my heart. Colonel Parker ... If I could go to my grave and make half of the right decisions that he made regarding Elvis, I would be very happy that I had really, really accomplished more than I ever thought I could … and along with that, I would take all the bad decisions that he's made and I'd take all of them and I'd still be way outbalanced. But, he, he was, uh, his ... his … Elvis was his best interest … and there's been things that have come out against him ... they weren’t intentionally done … like Colonel Parker being the bad guy … you, know … because he wasn’t. He cared about Elvis and he did the best he could and I think he did a hell of a job. I worked with him a lot on tour so I was with him constantly on tour out there and I saw what he did for Elvis.” In the same presentation, in reply to a question about Elvis, West said, “I would say … probably what really sticks out in my mind … if you kind of took everything together about Elvis, with his humility and his warmth and his compassion and his concern and take all of this … and, you can probably wrap it up in one word … is, humanity. His humanity was something like, you just don’t, you know, it’s such a big word but he covered that word very well. It really brings him to it, you know … yeah … humanity.” In a June 22, 1977 interview, before Elvis’ passing, Elvis’ father, Vernon Presley, said, "Colonel Parker is an honest man. And I think that's where the big organization and the big togetherness comes. You know? Once you find out, you don't have to worry about a guy being your manager, what he will do for you ... he handled it ... you do the show ... everything worked smooth.” In West's case, harboring favorable opinions towards Parker might be attributed to Parker producing the money-making opportunities that he did. In the same vein, Elvis, the "bread and butter" of the operations, combined with Parker’s business prowess, enabled a quality of life that West would not have been able to enjoy otherwise. Therefore, his loyalty was to both. As for Vernon Presley’s opinion, at least at the time of the interview, some say that he was snowed by Parker. Like West, Mr. Presley also enjoyed the fruits of Parker's labor - as conniving and manipulative as Parker has said to have been. The bottom line is Parker was able to produce the venues that equated into dollars. Although his antics might have been questioned during the process and much later, the concern at the time that it was happening wasn’t strong enough to change the equation by replacing Parker. As long as the money kept rolling in, the relationship that had been established wasn’t questioned, business as usual as it evolved was the accepted norm.

I am sorry it's just so hard to believe that Elvis could not stand up to Parker. It's too hard to believe that anyone would have that much control over anyone else. Parker must of had some leverage on Elvis and his father, some sort of blackmail to keep them controlled. It's more common than people believe. In fact many managers do that so that their client's won't walk out on them. It's so sad that Elvis didn't get to enjoy all the money he was robbed out of.

Perhaps you are a young person who ''knows'' of Elvis based on these silly biopics that crop up every decade. The real Elvis Presley took zero shit off of anyone (even the US Army). He was polite and humble, but he knew full well who he was. One of the reasons for this myth of ''weak Elvis'' comes from the shrimpy, short, light framed, pretty boy actors who have portrayed him in movies for the generations who never saw the awe inspiring reality. Elvis was a BIG man. NOBODY blackmailed him or ever showed him the least disrespect. He showed up in D.C. and told the Marine guards he wanted to see Nixon and left the number of the room he was staying at. In all of 4 hours, a White House aide phoned and said, ''The President of the United States will gladly receive Mr. Presley''. You've probably seen the picture! I don't mean to be hard, but when people spread this false myth, they insult the man's memory and legacy. Please don't believe that Elvis Presley couldn't stand up to Parker or anyone else. There are scores of documentaries and hundreds of books. Go and learn the truth. Maybe if folks would watch the authentic footage instead of these ridiculously simplified Hollywood fairy tails, these misconceptions could be laid to rest. Elvis was bound by contracts which he signed for the largest payoffs of any other movie star of his era. That is the business. He surely regretted those last couple of movies and surely got tired of the relentless touring. But nobody ever forced Elvis Presley to do anything. No offense, and just saying...

@@westsidesmitty1 Okay I can respect your passion for Elvis. I can agree that maybe not all is true. My mistake..... but don't try to educate me on classic Hollywood and the system back then. I know just as much about classic Hollywood as you do about Elvis. In fact I have read everything there was to know about Hollywood and dirty it was back then and now. And no I didn't Google it. Since I was 14 I was watching silent movies knew the stars. Read autobiographies and cross read others perspectives. Even talked to people like retired set designers. My own mother worked for John Wayne. So I understand passion for something. Maybe I just wasn't that big on Elvis. And I can admit when I am wrong. But never underestimate how young a person is or think that just because they are young they don't know squat. The first silent made in America was the great train robbery 1903 it was 12 mins. long. My favorite director was Marie-Georges-Jean Méliès who directed A Trip To The Moon. Second favorite was Cecil DeMille among others. My favorite actress of all time was Greta Garbo. Yeah so this kid might not know about Elvis but is passionate about classic Hollywood. I know how evil the system is.

@@Lyttits anyone that pushes carnies & drugs on a trusting believing soul is hellbent on deception. freemasons are evil to the core they worship satan. the outcome can never be good for a Christian. Elvis became their sacrificial lamb. to the end, Elvis tried to have control of his own life. sadly it seems that he never achieved that. Benjamin was caught in the same trap. the fight ended in death, or did it.?

Far out Tom Hanks looks terrible now and it's weird to think he's only 6 years older than Tom Cruise but he looks about 30 years older than Cruise.

@@thejamesbondshow9754 You do know Tom Cruise is knee deep in cosmetic surgery? Tom Hanks in contrast has just allowed the natural ageing process to take place.

Tom Hanks looks great in real life. They gave him a fat suit and makeup in this movie. Tom Cruise looked far older 5 years ago, becfor he syaryed botox for his wrinkles. At least, Hanks is all natural.

The Grunge channel almost always portrays Elvis in an inferior or negative light, littered with misinformation. Aside from the other untruths reported, regarding his acting ability, they have intentionally shown insignificant clips from some of his poorest movies. Elvis made some good movies and they could have picked from many well-acted scenes in King Creole, Jailhouse Rock, Flaming Star, Wild in the Country, Follow That Dream...... they should have highlighted the great potential that was crushed by his manager! According to some of the best directors and actors of the day, Elvis was a good actor. They said he was natural and instinctive and could have become one of the greats if given time and the right scripts. They also noted his charm and brilliant comedic timing, as well as his ability to deliver serious drama. Elvis could have been a "Cary Grant-style actor who did both, he liked comedy and serious drama, however, he did not like musicals! I suggest you watch what Elvis considered his best movie, "King Creole" before deriding his acting skills. ✌

All these bad guy stories about Parker are made up. Elvis did whatever he wanted and Parker was his partner from the beginning to the end. Elvis and his dad Vernon along with Parker were in charge regardless of what his loser friends or ex wife sell in their books.

BS, on the contrary, Elvis was a good actor! He had a natural, instinctive acting ability according to award-winning movie directors he worked with, they stated he had the potential to become a really great actor if he was given good scripts!

Ok…..let’s get this straight you got so much wrong here. As the Colonel would say “you’ve been snowed” If all you have used is Alanna Nash’s book ( I know Alanna) then that is a pity, any true journalist you should know to get a more rounded picture and NOT just use one source. You should know there was NEVER any links between the Colonel and any crime in Holland. The Colonel was as a child subject of sexual abuse, his exit from Holland to escape that..l.wouldn’t you. Yes the Colonel did not have papers…in the 1920’s only 15% of people in America did not have papers and could be classed as ‘illegal aliens’. If Elvis did travel overseas the Colonel would have had no problem obtaining a passport…he paid thousands in tax over the years, he had social security number and knew 6 US presidents..he would have no problem obtaining a passport! In 1976 and 1977 the Colonel set wheels in motion for Elvis appear in the U.K….How do I know? I know people who knew them both. Do you? Elvis never wanted the Colonel to interfere in the ‘artistic’ side of his career. The Colonel was Elvis’ promotor, not his mentor or Father figure. Elvis was an intelligent man and anyone who knew him will tell you NO ONE told Elvis what to do! Implying otherwise is demeaning Elvis’ character and intelligence. I could go on. Why because I have been an Elvis fan for 54 years. In the last 12 years I have met and talked with members of Elvis’ inner circle and I now appreciate that the Colonel is not the Bond type villain he has been painted. I also know that even during his lifetime the Colonel was prepared to be the devil for Elvis…that is how much he cared for him!
