Elvis Presley is known today as the “King of Rock and Roll” and one of the most significant cultural icons in popular culture. But behind all of Presley’s success, his manager Colonel Tom Parker was calling almost all the shots.
Parker discovered Presley in 1955 and became his sole representative. He secured a record deal for Presley with RCA Victor which led to Presley's breakthrough with “Heartbreak Hotel.” Parker wasn’t just influential in Presley’s career, he was even influential when it came to Presley’s decisions to join the Army and marry his wife Priscilla Beaulieu.
But Parker was not quite a straight shooter, and many aspects of his life have actually been shady and mysterious. Here’s the truth about Elvis Presley’s manager.

If Presley’s mother hadn’t died so young, the trajectory of their relationship would, I think, have been very different. Problem was that Uber Narcissist Parker knew exactly how to play the wounded and grieving young Elvis. He didn’t leave because he was trauma bonded to a guy who behaved like his savior. The movie did a brilliant job of capturing this diabolical dynamic.

He stole Elvis blind! Who ever heard of a manager taking 50% of your earnings? He also kept songwriters away from Elvis. Can you imagine all the great songs that Elvis missed out on? Then there's Parker's gambling addiction. He worked Elvis into the ground even when he knew he was in bad health and alot of times was running a fever because of chronic tonsillitis so he could gamble in the casinos! Then after Elvis died tried to get Lisa Marie's inheritance!

@@gregclark3268 maybe. Parker was a scheming opportunist who placed himself in the deep south amid hicks. If Elvis got away from him he'd have found other ways to swindle people. Elvis and his father were naive country boys lacking Financial finesse. Gladys did not want her son to go with Parker but Vernon over-ruled her objections. She wanted an attorney to take a look at Parker's proposal. She was intuitive beyond the norm, knew Parker would lead Elvis to a bad end and died early from the strain. @ceb111481
@ceb111481 Жыл бұрын
This relationship was textbook toxic and abusive. And for those of you saying why didn't he fire him for good, spoken like someone who has never been in an abusive relationship. It's not always easy or possible to just leave at any time. Abusers are master manipulators and exert a LOT of control over their victims starting from the very beginning. They know exactly what to do and say to get what they want. It often starts out subtle and gradual and progressively gets worse over time. That is definitely evident in this case as seen in Elvis's declining health and drug addictions. Having Elvis performing 2 shows a night every day of the week is crazy, no wonder he was exhausted, addicted to drugs to get through it, and ended up worked to death. I honestly believe that was exactly what Parker wanted. Someone who is physically and mentally exhausted all the time won't have the energy or the strength to raise objections or fight back effectively. So you could say this relationship was abusive in pretty much every way: psychological, financial, physical. It was so messed up.

Here's something I found out about Parker when he was managing Elvis: In August 27th 1965, The Beatles *(Along with their manager, Brian Epstein)* were in America for a tour until they were invited to have a meeting with Elvis at his place. But the problem when they came to his house, Parker said there would be no picture taking, no press, no recording at the estate. Also, I would have loved it if The Beatles and Elvis recorded a song together, had taken some pictures, and if filmed the entire meeting. I would have also liked it if Elvis had a conversation with Brian. Maybe Brian could have helped Elvis get him out of the deal he had with Parker and be able to go around the world.

The crazy thing especially is that Parker was pretty much the reason why Elvis became one of the biggest musicians in history, but at the same time, he was also the reason Elvis fell to almost literal shit in the end.

I read Elvis s biography he wanted to get away from the silly 60s movies and be a serious actor that ignorant manager wanted to keep making money off of Elvis and so when Elvis was offered the male lead part in A Star Is Born with Barabara Streisand that manager Parker told Elvis to not do it what a big mistake Kris Kristofferson got the part and movie was a smash hit
@leykimayri
@leykimayri Жыл бұрын
I think he did a "serious" movie but it wasn't a success because he wasn't dancing and singing in it. It's what the fans want, not what the artist wants, and his fans wanted to see him sing and dance, not to play dramas. Chances are the "A star is born" would not have been a success with Elvis in the leading role.

I saw the new Elvis biopic movie on HBO MAX last year. I loved it and I also feel bad for Elvis. Tom Parker deserves to be in the Manager Hall of Infamy with Lou Pearlman, the con-man manager of Backstreet Boys and N*SYNC and Allen Klein, the horrible manager who ruined both The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. The only managers that I know of that deserve to be in the Manager Hall of Fame are: Brian Epstein, Andrew Loog Oldham, Murry Wilson, and Peter Grant. It there are any more better managers that deserve to be on the list of great managers, let me know.

Elvis biopic seems to be more about the greed and abuse of the coronel and how Elvis suffered as a result as opposed to his career, much in the way that Dahmer seems to actually be about racism and racial injustice as opposed to brutal murders. I like that they focused on the bigger picture so that we society can figure out how to prevent such tragedies in the future

I don't understand something. If Colonel Parker made a lot of money then why did he need to gamble? I also don't understand people who only care about money as if it's the most important thing in the universe, more important than life itself. That's totally illogical and unfathomable. I also don't get those who think they never have enough money no matter how much they earn. It's very nonsensical.
@cherieodell9048

Being randomly rewarded for something, like you are when you're gambling, causes the most addictive behavior known to man. He couldn't stop gambling. And it wasn't small amounts of money he was gambling with, I'm sure. And God only knows if the casinos were helping to motivate Colonel Parker in certain ways or something.... Elvis was on all those drugs... and there had to be some kind of manipulation going on, and some people are just very good at that. It seems pretty apparent that Colonel Parker must have been good at it. I mean, look at all the stuff that man got away with and what he did for a living all his life! It definitely wasn't a healthy situation, and Elvis literally died because of it. And honestly- I wouldn't be surprised if there isn't even more that no one really knows about all the bad stuff that man did. I'm not all that shocked that it has been discovered that he most likely committed murder and that sparked his desire to move to the U.S. I wonder about the early demise of Elvis's mother. No one else seems to have made any kind of suggestion about that kind of unusual development, but I really do think it seems strange, and when I first learned about that, I thought Colonel Parker had some motivation at the time for that to occur.

Colonel Tom Parker, real name being Andreas Cornelius Van Kuijk, didn't see Elvis as a person. Not to mention the night when Parker jumped aboard a ship from Holland, a 23-year old woman named Anna Van Den-Enden was best to death in her kitchen, could be a suspicion or may be someone else.
