The more you play, and the longer you play you build a personal library of licks, riffs and fills. Its your personal identity as a guitar player. The way you do bends, pull offs, hammer on's, vibrato also. It becomes your guitar voice. We're all a little different. JMHO... 8) --gary

i think 99.99% of the time this is correct. I saw an interview with Nuno Bettencourt where he had the opportunity to plug in and use Eddie Van Halen's rig. Nuno played a few minutes - and came to the conclusion that he sounded like Nuno Bettencourt playing Eddie's rig!!! Your favourite gear can enhance your playing, but for the most part it's all in the hands - and your heart. Develop your own style and enjoy yourself. Break the rules! There's no right or wrong answer. Peace & love to all 😉

If you're soloing in one position as the underlying harmony (chords) change underneath you, it will add harmonic color to your notes. Rather than always hopping around to keep with the changes, try playing in a spot an notice how the color of what you play changes.

I love the idea of playing modally over each of the chords in the progression. I love your Patreon channel. You mention some of my favorite bands- Zeppelin, Hendrix, Black Sabbath (sort of). If it is possible to teach any of their songs or any of the classic rock stuff on Patreon (or here) that would be awesome. I know you are great at teaching those types of songs from you Simple Chords classes. It seems strange to think you would need a leather jacket in Florida. Keep rockin'. You're awesome.

Love your channel and you humor man. My present challenge is writing accompaniments to the original chord progressions I come up with. Since I’m not going to “write” a simple 1-4-5 (boring), I have trouble placing my progressions within a key or mode (don’t even know if I just used mode correctly). Would love to see you dissect a more complex Big Thief-like progression, for instance, to determine which key to use if you were writing an accompaniment. It would help immensely when approaching my own stuff. Thanks man.

There's a difference between taking the traditional solo and playing lead guitar (as opposed to rhythm guitar). Playing lead guitar involves you carrying the song with chords, melodies and riffs etc. Is that right?

Here is my opinion on guitar soloing: When soloing you must be creative! For instance, say you're playing a song with your band or group, you basically want to play the melody of the song and make it interesting. It's YOUR solo! You can mix it up and come up with something creative, mix it with chords, chord voicings, single notes, etc.
