Sorry, James: but you seem to have your facts in a muddle. If you examine the 128 times when "eon" is used in the NT, the shortest time period to which it refers is that between creation, now and the second coming of Christ. That is why it is commonly translated as "age" or "world." Nowhere in either testament is it used of the time spent by Jonah in the whale. You are probably thinking of the related adjective, "aionios," which appears in Jonah 2:6: but this carries the meaning of 'forever' and translates the Hebrew 'o-lawm,' which generally means "time out of mind (past or future)." (See Strong's definitions, G165, G166 & H5769.)

Yes Satan is tormenting only the living, not the dead. He will be tormented himself at the day of Judgement, not tormenting others. Besides that if Satan is allowed to rule over ppl on hell then that would mean that God has given Satan what he wants, to be a God himself and why should we get punished and not Satan also? Glad you say that. From my research after death, it appears the theme of the Bible states we actually stay in the grave until the resurrection. I have tons of Bible verses for evidence. Still studying this and so could be wrong, but these verses have changed my mindset completely. We do not go immediately to heaven or hell. Some verses to consider: Job 14:10-15 What is a soul? Read Genesis where God says "Adam BECAME a living soul" we don't have souls, we are souls. Nephash is the word for soul in OT. According to Genesis,our body has life because we have a body + spirit of life. Without the spirit we have no life, but the spirit is not an entity of itself. And the spirit is the breath of life that comes from God. Ezekiel 18:4, 20 - "The soul who sins shall die" Job19:25-27 - In my flesh I shall see God. Only once he is resurrected he shall see God. Ecclesiastes 9** John 6:44 Psalm 17:15 - resurrection only Daniel 12:2 - resurrection only Jesus saying "No one has ascended to heaven but the son of man" - no one has been to heaven from Jesus time except him which means between the beginning of time and Jesus no one went to heaven. Psalm 146:4 Ecclesiastes 9:5, 10 Ecclesiastes 3 Job 7:21 Psalm 6:5 Psalm 115:17 Ecclesiastes 12:7 -everyone's spirit when we die goes directly to God. In context of this passage, even the wicked's spirit goes to God when we die. Therefore, the spirit is not an entity of itself but rather the breath of life. Spirit and breath of life are interchangeable in the Bible. Our soul rather is the only part of us that will be resurrected. Our flesh will come out of the grave and that is when we will see God. Job 32:8 Luke 23:46 - Jesus's spirit also went to God just like the rest of the dead do. Zechariah 12:1

At death, the body decays. The spirit , God's breath of life, returns to God who gave it and the soul is no more. It sleeps, knowing nothing Eccl. 9;5, until the resurrection. The dead close their eyes one second and open them the next. For them it seemed only a second, but much time has passed before they awaken.God does not forget the believer in the grave. The seed that was planted in him will give life at the right time. The believers resurrection occurs at the rapture of the church. ALL believers will be awakened from their sleep of death, at the same time, and called up to meet Jesus in the clouds. They are given immortality at that time and are forever with the LORD. Unbelievers are resurrected from their sleep of death 1000 years after the believers resurrection. They didn't seek after immortality, ROMANS 2;7 so they are raised just as they were before they died, mortal. Flesh and blood can not inherit the Kingdom of God. Remember Dorcas from Acts 9 whom Jesus brought back to life, and Lazarus, Mary and Martha's brother who was dead for four days and Jesus brought back to life? They came back with their mortal bodies. He will do the same for unbelievers at their resurrection.They are awakened and given the death sentence. They weep and gnash their teeth in anger over this fate. They will be cast into the hell fires and it will consume them. They will be destroyed, die and perish forever. The parable of the rich man and Lazarus is not a literal true story. It's not about heaven or hell at all. Neither of those two places is even mentioned in the story. Hades is not Hell. It is the resting place of all the dead. The rich man represents Israel, Judah in particular, and Lazarus represents the Gentile nations. Read it again with this in mind. Jesus was teaching a greater truth about the soon coming kingdom of God. Notice all the detail about what the rich man wore. He was dressed in purple and fine linen. This is what the Jewish Priests wore. He lived in luxury every day. The Jews were wealthy. He called Abraham his father. Every jew did this.He had five brothers, as did Judah. The Jews were not convinced when Jesus rose from the dead. Lazarus laid at the gate and was covered in sores. The Jews said that the Gentiles were unclean and this is what the sores meant. The Gentiles were called 'dogs' by the Jews. Read about the caananite woman who said to Jesus in Matt 15-Yes it is, Lord," she said. "Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master's table."They desired the 'crumbs form the Jewish tables. They longed for what the Jews had with God. The place of torment is where the jews are right now. They have been suffering the hatred of the world ever since the church age began. Where one time the gentiles were hated by the jews now it is reversed. Remember Hitler? What nation is always in the news and everyone hates? Israel. We know this is not a literal story because no where in scripture does it teach that angels carry the dead to Abraham's bosom. Abraham's bosom is not heaven nor could all the dead rest in his chest area. Actually the bible teaches that the dead are brought to heaven by God, not angels.psalm 9;15... Also, if you were in a firey hell, you wouldn't ask for a drop of water, you'd ask for a lake to jump into.MANY PEOPLE THINK THIS IS ABOUT HELL AND IT'S NOT.

Jesus is the savior of the world. He does not just offer salvation to the world He saves it. For He was sent to be the Savior of the world and that is what He did. 1 Timothy 4:10 "That is why we both labor and suffer reprouch, because we trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially those that believe." It is a good thing that many believers are turning away from the myth of eternal conscious torment. But Anihilationism is also inadequate. I stopped for awhile at anihilationism on the way to Christian universalism. The Lake of Fire is a mataphor for the passionate all-consuming love of God that consumes anything that is not of God's kind. Not beings, but thoughts and attitudes. We were created IN Christ, as the apostle John declares. So we are essentially of God's kind. Jesus came to rescue the entire universe, including every human being ever created. He as the last Adam undid completely what was instituted in Adam. Rom 5:12-17. If what Jesus did was far greater than what resulted from Adam's sin then it MUST apply to ALL humanity.

Jesus died so you could have life and have it more abundantly. He hates our sin, but loves us. He says he remembers our sins no more. He has cast them into the sea of forgetfulness. You can NOT lose your salvation, even if you sin. Once you have believed, God keeps you. Our deeds do not determine our destination, [heaven or hell], but they do determine our rewards or lack of them in this life and the next, so it is important to be obedient to God. As a believer, you need not worry about your sins sending you to hell. Rejoice, because you have been set free.

It doesn't say "after we received the HOLY SPIRIT and are born again..." This tells us that those who hear about the truth and come to KNOW the truth, yet don't believe it, THEY will have a judgment and a fire to consume them. There is no other sacrifice made for them. Okay! Then give me an answer for this? Paul tells us in Romans 6:23..."For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord." I am sure you read this many times and have heard this verse. If an eternal torment in hells is possible, then you have to be given eternal life to exist there. But if you have eternal life, a gift from God through Jesus Christ, then you would not be in hell. Isn't that correct? If you do not have the gift of eternal life which is given to us by faith in Jesus Christ, then according to Paul, you have eternal death! Wouldn't that be correct? Have you not read where is says in Cor. 8:6..."Jesus Christ through whom all things came into being and through whom we live." If we were to be punished in hell for all eternity then Christ would have to be present there to sustain our life. My brother, figure this one out and tell me what is truth here

God loves you SO much. He actually made a way for you so that your sins would not cause you their consequences of death forever. Isn't man's worse fear in life the fear of death and dying? He took that away from us. He died for us instead. Now we don't have to die. THAT is LOVE. If man doesn't want to have a relationship with his creator, then the only just thing to do is to end their life spiritually. Those who believe will be gifted with immortality and live with God on a new Heaven and Earth. Those who don't believe will perish. It is that simple. When a person dies at an old age or by an accident or disease, we accept that they wont be around any more. Death happens, as bad as it is. Exactly. If there's no chance of correction/ repentance and purification why would a loving God resurrect the lost, give them life, only to judge them and then annihilate/murder them? The idea that God, being all powerful, all loving, and all knowing, knowing the beginning to the end, is going to allow himself to lose most of mankind to a spirit being that he created doesn't make any sense. Or that somehow Satan has the power and ability to put a time limit on God's work. As if God can't reach and offer his salvation from eternal death to the lost beyond the grave, because it's too late or Satan won't allow it, doesn't make any sense. My major problem with Hell, or even the idea itself, is that a person could very well be brought up in a part of the world where this doctrine is not taught or even known about, and yet that person is doomed to fry in Hell? Do you think you'd have the same beliefs you have now if you had been born and raised in some other part of the world? India? The Middle East? China? The deepest deserts and jungles of Africa, where many have never even seen a person outside of their local area? For example, in Sumatra, the population is about 95% Muslim. Do you think you'd have Christian beliefs if you had been born and raised there instead of where you were? Not likely. Would it be fair to judge you because of that fact?

hell is a false, antichristian teaching, based on translation errors and pagan doctrine. The very word comes from norse mythology(hel). The catholic church spread that wicked teaching, as well as many other false teachings. Jesus is the Saviour of all mankind. There will be judgment, no one will get less punishment than what he/she deserves. But not more either. God is just. Everything He does has a purpose. His judgment, ultimately, is corrective in nature. He will draw all to Him(some earlier than others) according to His own counsel. Read 1.Cor 15:21-28, Eph 1:9-10, Col 1:16-20. I am not preaching "everything you do is fine, you'll be saved none the less". All will be saved, but only through Jesus. Sin will be punished, corrected. And every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord(which is only possible by the Holy Spirit-1.Cor 12:3). Every day people have children knowing that they will die. It doesn't stop them from having them. To have a child end up in hell is to have a child that DIES FOREVER, instead of living forever. The chapter you are referring to tells us that there is no rest day or night for those who take the mark of the beast DURING THE TRIBULATION period. That chapter is not talking about hell. Well, when you consider that the word most often translated into "hell" in the Old Testament is "sheol", which literally just means "grave", and that the word "hell" itself came from nearby pagan religions, and that "hell" is not even mentioned in the first five books of the bible (not even as a punishment for breaking any or all of the 10 commandments), and that Jews then and now have no concept of Hell (or the devil), then the idea starts to seem like a "marketing ploy" to get and keep people in line as far as early Christianity was and is concerned. Consider (sorry for the long post): Popular myth : Hell is an established Biblical doctrine that is in the Bible from start to finish. This is not true! Two thirds of the Bible (the Old Testament) does not mention Hell at all. ("Sheol," the Old Testament word that is sometimes translated as Hell, only means "grave" by definition, and it is where everyone in the Old Testament went when they died--good or evil, Jew or Gentile). Thus the Old Testament does not contain the concept of Hell! Think about it... If Hell is real, why didn't God make that warning plain right at the beginning of the Bible? God said the penalty for eating of the tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil was death- -not "eternal life" in fire and brimstone. If Hell is real, why wasn't Cain warned about it, or Sodom and Gomorrah , or any of those who committed the earliest recorded "sins?" If Hell is real why didn't Moses warn about this fate in the Ten Commandments or the Mosaic Covenant consisting of over 600 laws, ordinances, and warnings? The Mosaic Law simply stated blessings and cursings in this lifetime. If Hell is real, why are its roots in paganism, rather than the Bible? If Hell is real, why did God tell the Jews that burning their children alive in the fire to the false god Molech, (in the valley of Gehenna ) was so detestable to Him? God said that such a thing "never even entered His mind" (Jer. 32:35). How could God say such a thing to Israel , if He has plans to burn alive a good majority of His own creation in a spiritual and eternal Gehenna of His own making? **FACT: The King James Bible erroneously translates the word "Sheol" as Hell a total of 31 times in the Old Testament, thus setting a foundation for that doctrine in the New Testament as well as the majority of Bible translations to follow the KJV. Even so, most new translations have completely eliminated Hell from the Old Testament, as honest and better scholarship has demanded. If a doctrine does not appear as seed form in the books of the Law, the Prophets and the Psalms, it cannot fairly be taught as a major biblical doctrine, if indeed it can be taught as biblical at all! Jesus warned the Jews many times of impending destruction, both nationally and individually. This is a far cry from our modern Evangelical interpretation that says not accepting Jesus as your Savior is what sends someone to Hell. Are we perhaps missing the symbolism that Jesus originally intended? If Hell is real, aren't we taking verses out of context when we warn non-Jewish sinners who are not part of the Mosaic covenant God made with the nation of Israel about consequences for sin which have nothing to do with them since they are not under that covenant? Since the concept of Hell doesn't exist in the Old Testament, how could Jesus and his disciples teach that salvation was deliverance from a place that is not even found in their Scriptures? And if He was introducing the subject for the first time, why did He do it so casually, as though His listeners already understood what He was talking about? If Hell is real, since some English translations use the word Hell for the Greek word "Gehenna," in the New Testament, why didn't this same place (Gehenna) get translated Hell in the many places where it appears in the Hebrew form "ga ben Hinnom" in the Old Testament? If the Jews did not understand "Gehenna" as a symbol of everlasting torture, but rather as a place of shame, filth, and defilement (where Israel participated in the grossest form of idol worship), why does modern theology ascribe more to the word than the original meaning did? The teaching of Gehenna has evolved in Jewish teachings to include punishment in the afterlife; but even today, Gehenna still does not mean "endless" punishment to the Jews. If Hell is real how could the Apostle Paul (who was especially commissioned by God to preach the gospel to the nations) say that he had declared the entire counsel of God (Acts 20:27), when indeed he never warned of "Hell" in any of his letters? If Hell is real, wouldn't Paul, of all people, warn of it repeatedly?

i was scared stiff about Hell the first time i saw a Turn or Burn testimony about someone who legally died, saw it, then came back, and saw many, many, maaaaaaany more Turn or Burn videos about people who experienced the same thing, some with very vivid detail. and if even Saint Teresa could get such a vision... but now, in hindsight, i don't know if the first guy was telling the truth, but he truly believes he experienced it, so he's not lying to scare people at the very least. everyone else, on the other hand... But anyway, this sent me down a bad downward spiral of fear and dread. Hell is not a firey place of torment. Ecclesiastes 9:5,10 says that the dead are unconscious. In Ezekiel 18:4,20 we read that the soul dies. Okay! Then give me an answer for this? The bible tells us that no one is immortal but God so how can you have an immortal soul if we are not immortal? Do we somehow have an immortality outside of the authority of God? That is what you are telling me. Paul tells us in Romans 6:23..."For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord." I am sure you read this many times and have heard this verse. If an eternal torment in hells is possible, then you have to be given eternal life to exist there. But if you have eternal life, a gift from God through Jesus Christ, then you would not be in hell. Isn't that correct? If you do not have the gift of eternal life which is given to us by faith in Jesus Christ, then according to Paul, you have eternal death! Wouldn't that be correct? Have you not read where is says in Cor. 8:6..."Jesus Christ through whom all things came into being and through whom we live." rev 20;10 says that the devil and the beast and the false prophet are thrown into hell and will be tormented forever and ever. That's correct. THEY, those three beings, will be. Unbelievers will not live in the fire forever. They can't because they are flesh and blood and will be consumed by the fire. They did not receive the gift of immortality because they did not seek after it like the believers did. Those three, the devil, the false prophet and the beast are not humans. They are spiritual demons who possess a human. The human they possess will be destroyed and consumed and killed in the fire. The demons will be tormented forever in it.

All believers will be resurrected from their sleep of death at the time of the rapture when Jesus calls them up from their graves along with all the believers who are alive on the earth at that time. They are given immortal bodies and meet him in the clouds to be with him forever.1 cor 15;21-24' But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen ASLEEP For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.But each in turn: Christ, the firstfruits; THEN, WHEN HE COMES, those who belong to him.' So, when do we go to be with God and receive our immortal bodies? WHEN HE COMES. Has he come yet? no.

Where everybody who does not believe this message. God is love first and foremost it's his love that makes him holy and perfect. To say that God is going to torment people forever and ever in hell goes against his very nature. So there will be more people in Hell For Eternity than in heaven I don't think so. And then Satan will have gained victory because he will have all those tormented Souls with him. And then we will be in heaven with God thinking about all the ones we love who are being tormented. People have Twisted the word of God to mean something that it never intended. Remember in the Garden of Eden there was a tree of life. We never ate of the Tree of Life. Therefore we do not live forever. God is not going to grant them immortality at the end if he kept it from them in the beginning.

How do you explain 1 Peter 3:18-20? If the spirits of the unrepentant people in the days of Noah (whose wickedness was of such a degree that the Lord saw fit to destroy them by the flood) were obviously very conscious and warranted a visit by Jesus (after His death on the cross but before His resurrection) in what Peter describes as their "prison" wherein He preached His gospel to them, then surely every other sinner warrants the same, and surely they have not and will not be "completely annihilated." There is no way to fully explain the doctrine of "Hell" in five minutes; in addition to understanding the context of every reference to it, it requires an understanding of the Greek and Hebrew words the term was translated from in each of those contexts. This is flat-out false doctrine. You need to do a LOT more research.

Verse 18 tells us that Jesus was made alive in the spirit after he was put to death. Verse 19 says that after he was made alive he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned SPIRITS, to those disobedient SPIRITS from Noah's day. This is NOT unrepentant people. These are demons, or Satan's angels. Since there are not, and have never been, any human spiritual beings EVER, this verse is saying that Jesus went to proclaim his resurrection from the dead to the fallen angels (disobedient SPIRITS) of Noah's day who are being held in prison in the underworld. No believers, including Noah or anyone from the Old or New Testaments, has been given immortality yet. Immortality and eternal life is given at the resurrection of believers when Jesus returns, at the rapture where he raises them from their graves and they "put on" immortality. Please don't be like Hymenaeus and Philetus of 2 Timothy 2:18, who Paul called false teachers because they were telling others that the resurrection had already occured.

Lazarus and the rich man is nagging at me. Thats the only place in the whole bible that mentions conscious torment. But it never did say it was eternal. Purgatory maybe? Hmmm.
