Pro tip from the film industry sir, when we get reflections from pictures or even mirrors on set, we alter the angle of reflection usually by angling the picture up by putting something behind the frame at the bottom. Just a small rolled up ball of tape or anything really. It will hold, and your ringlight won't feature. The other option is to take the glass out but that's a better solution for unreal life on set, not the home and office.

As a student of Aristotlean logic, let me make a small correction. The slippery slope is indeed a logical fallacy, and it being "real" or "unreal" is not the true state of it's nature. It is, in fact, one of the few that have a clearly defined exception. The slippery slope is committed (not real or unreal) when you simply claim A leads to Z. However, if you can show a causal link between A and B, B and C, C and D, et cetera, all the way to Y and Z, the fallacy is non extant. We've seen A to B, B to C, et cetera, in real time over the last 25 years. The fact is, the slippery slope in this case IS NOT real, as the fallacy has not been committed. Rhetorical, I understand, but I thought you'd appreciate a deeper dive into that.

In an interview several years ago, an Italian historian said something that I think is absolutely perfect for this moment: "Every historian must be a revisionist, in the sense that if new data and proven information become available, history can be changed or rewritten. Archaeologist here (15 years under my belt). I have seen this revisionism first-hand. If events (you use the Bastille as an example) are recorded by people close to or directly related to the event, this was news when written rather than a document intended for future generations. It's the same as current news. If I can not trust what I see on the news as fact or fact-based by journalists, then anything stated can not be relied upon, and all communication is a fabrication (not a rabbit hole I wish to go down). Creating issues for future generations who will look at our information, our current affairs, and our interpretations of them and state that it is 'one truth'. Try telling journalists their articles and reports are a version of the truth rather than a fact-based assessment. Admittedly bias and political persuasion can give multiple interpretations of the same event, conservative media vs liberal media. But a balanced person can look at all sources of the same event and gain an understanding of the facts because, for the most part, several points of the event, regardless of the media sway, will be similar. A prudent example is Octavian's victory over Marc Antony; we know how it happened, as all sources agree; we should, until/ if other evidence is revealed, should be treated as factual. However, the interpretation of why the split occurred and more minor nuances are debated due to opposing historical views. A historian's preview is to show both historical interpretations and give further insight and understanding using hindsight; rather than simply creating a new narrative.

There's many more than 'both' sides of a historical event to collect, collate, compile and reconcile. Don't see things as too monochromatic, as suggested by another comment. In the article breakdown, it seems to me that the historian was specifically distancing himself from his own job, because the purview of a historian is to compile evidence of facts. He seemed to be trying to obfuscate what his own job is supposed to be though - perhaps he's trying to confuse his employers sufficiently that he can start writing historical fiction instead and still draw a paycheck from them? 🤡

Truth exists bothin within and without. You must find the patterns that are in dialogue between the self and the Universe to glimpse it. If you keep weaving the through-lines in these patterns back and forth, you may order the Mind to see these Many'd Truths revealing The Truth. Unfortunately due to the nature of the modern age, so many of us are led to revile the Outside World around us, where the Unseen Truth exists. And through phones and many types of media, we are ever able to disappate and dissolve ourselves into these pornographically Many'd half-truths we find there, that can only exist within Ourselves. Fostering a love for our false self-created realities, fragmented souls falling into smaller and smaller echoes of Ourselves. @@metatronyt That is ignoring that all history exhibits bias. History only has value when informed by archaeology and context. For example, I grew up in the shadows of Civil War statues. I always thought that those "heroes" of the Confederacy were put there during the Civil War. It was only later I learned that they were placed in every Southern city during the 1920s at the height of KKK power. So then, believing a serial adulterer was chosen by God to rule America? Imagining that a withdrawal from a major conflict where there are 13 American casualties and 0 MIAs is the biggest military disgrace in history? Thinking that not paying our bills and announcing that we won't and losing our good standing as a payer will be less expensive to the country with the world's standard fiat currency than incurring debt? Thinking that George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were abolitionists? Thinking that the Civil War was fought over states rights and nothing to do with slavery? Yeah, I see a lot of that. That's why I required my kids to read both "1984" and "Brave New World", our alternate futures. I also hate that black people are encouraged to use the n-word with one another as a "term of endearment." No. Fuck that. Fuck that entirely. If you are a human being alive on this earth, you descend from slaves and conquerors. If you're black and use the N word with other black people, my message to you is this: using a slur to indicate some sort of shared brotherhood that merely represents a history of slavery is beneath you. The worst thing with some of the surface level diversity nonsense like Netflix's Cleopatra documentary is that I would argue that it's the exact opposite of what the supposedly "woke" people claim to want to support. There's a rich and storied history of Black African civilisations and by ignoring them and race-swapping a Ptolemeic pharaoh instead, those true stories are continuing to be erased. It's like someone at Netflix sat down and thought "Well we want to be diverse to be down with the kids but there couldn't possibly be any great black African civilisations we could make a documentary about so we'll just cast a black woman as Cleopatra, and ta-da, diversity!" It's ridiculous and insulting and frankly it's also boring - we need yet another documentary about Cleopatra about as much as we need yet another documentary about Henry VIII - he had six wives doncha know! Black people don't need to be gifted historical figures from other races, because they have a history just as rich and beautiful as any other, why can't we have documentaries about them? That would truly be embracing diversity.

@@faerie5926 I just googled Lost Cause myth, so I might be misunderstanding your claim. But isn't that an example of cherry picking? Ignore the slavery stuff which was the focus of the civil war and instead only talk about the states rights issues. But the states rights issues are historical facts too, with some individuals fighting for the south for only those reasons. The myth would be that the south as a whole was more concerned with states rights then slavery, correct? First I think there is quite a difference between this and the historical revisionism. As the Lost Cause myth as it is not making stuff up. It's siting evidence, but is wrong about how prominent those idea were. It's possible to do this in good faith and simply be wrong. But revisionism isn't based on evidence, and doesn't site any. It calls assumptions evidence instead, and is not possible to do in good faith. Second, I disagree that the Lost Cause myth is conservative. Certainly you could link it to the libertarians that fly the confederate flag (certainly right wing, but not conservatives). But it also comes from the leftists as an argument for why the US didn't fight a war against slavery. But again, I just googled it once, so I might be wrong about what the lost cause myth is entirely.

It’s a pity more people haven’t read Orwell’s ‘1984’. Thomas Sowell stated, ‘History is what happened, not what we wish had happened or what some theory says should have happened.’ There is a dangerous trend towards ‘presentism’, the judgement of past events by the standards (often of some discrete and recognisable group) of today. Often this is associated with the belief that everything is better now than in the past. Both standards thus believed will, of course, be different tomorrow. I think you’ve touched on this in past presentations. One minor point, “...” are inverted commas, not brackets. Excellent analysis though. Thank you.

The game Age Of Empires II (probably the first as well) had written on the box "Historical events shown in this game are not accurate". They didn't have to do it by law. But 25 years ago people still had some integrity and common sense. Now we absolutely need a law that all movies, games and shows need a disclaimer if they try to change the past. But such a law is dangerous in itself, as it gives power to an authority to what can be called the truth and what can't. The ideal solution, which is simply not being crazy, is not an option in the times we live in.

That's something I have noticed too. Society has become a lot like that Jurassic Park quote, "[you] were so preoccupied with whether or not [you] could, [you] didn’t stop to think if [you] should." Just because you can get away with being absolutely amoral and a lying piece of shit, doesn't mean you should. And honestly, our problems are nothing but a byproduct of encouraging people to do away with basic morals and ethics. The law doesn't say you shouldn't lie, but ethically, we should not be lying to people nor trying to backstab them to gain a bit of power or wealth. Now we are at a point where we may need laws in place so we can behave like good people, but that is a road we should never go down unless we absolutely have to.

Such a law would do more harm than good- It's basically the same thing as having a state-approved "Official Historic Truth"; Do YOU trust your government, to dictate exactly what that "REAL truth" is?!? Reality is that NOBODY knows with complete certainty the objective truth of who did what during 911, less than ONE generation ago,in a well-documented, highly technological era, in one of the wealthiest, MOST intensely-surveiled cities in the world... Figuring that stuff out, for events CENTURIES ago, to arrive at one specific "This DEFINITELY Happened" narrative for the Battle of Hastings, or the reign of Cleopatra, is a total lost cause (beyond a TINY HANDFUL of specific facts for each event, that can be known with any certainty... And even THOSE are often pretty questionable...) Better to just teach people that TV AND MOVIES AREN'T TRUTH... Even IF it's "based on true events" or a "historical recreation", and EVEN IF that is made by the very best historians, sincerely trying to be perfectly accurate, you are STILL watching something that's basically fiction, draped over a subjectively-chosen set of real historical sources (which MAY or MAY NOT be accurate, themselves). The problem is with the EXPECTATION that accurate reconstructions of specific events in history is even POSSIBLE (even in proper, academic secondary sources... Or even from PRIMARY sources, FROM that era; Is "KZbin Rewind 2018" an accurate depiction of 2018 KZbin? Is CNN or FOX News an accurate depiction of PRESENT DAY politics?) And expecting that accuracy from ENTERTAINMENT like TV, movies or video games multiplies the insanity of that expectation, by 1,000x. The deliberate re-writing of hiatory is bad... But it will ALWAYS happen, to a greater or lesser degree... The REAL SOLUTION is for viewers to KNOW that they can't expect PERFECT historical knowledge/accuracy ANYWHERE... but that tv and movies is the LAST place they can expect to see it [Better to just SURROUND people with outrageous, agenda-pushing propaganda, and accept that the dumb people will just believe/expect accuracy from that propaganda. While sensible people will reject ALL of it, until they can at least verify each SPECIFIC claim, from more reliable sources, if possible... Which is EXACTLY the system that every human ever, has inhabited....]

Common sense has been the enemy of science ever since eternity and if "history" is aiming to become scientific, it too must throw away common sense in favor of crunching big data. Truth, whether singular or multiple - is irrelevant to science. The pursuit of science is not the pursuit of truth but the pursuit of approximation to reality, this is because truth is unattainable. Science is able to move forward because it abandons truth, whereas philosophers are still arguing in standstill futility to this very day about a meaningless word.

I had the same problem. It's hard arguing against someone who just invents their claims from thin air, because I don't make claims without facts backing them up. The important thing is to not fall into the trap of inventing your counter claims. Instead question theirs. Ask them for evidence. And remember: The burden of proof is on the person making the claim, do not let them try to reverse the burden of proof by asking you to disprove their claim. Proving something, or even just backing it up with facts, is a lot harder than just inventing shit. That's why you're having a hard time. While you're trying to defend your position with facts, the other person is just flinging shit to see what sticks.

The fact that they stubbornly plow forward with the same narrative and insistence of being right about thier version of history would be terribly embarrassing if they weren't so arrogant. There are children , young and old adults of all races that aren't so gullible to believe everything coming from that community of woke . Infact there's several reactionary you tubers educating themselves and others of thier community true history and calling them out for the dishonorable behavior. There's only a small group of them that try to convince others that soon the world will be theirs because they were here first as though the only people on earth were blacks and the rest of us came along really late and stole Europe and the Americas from them . Take heart we've won they're bad losers and cheaters never want to admit they're wrong but soon it will be too embarrassing for them to continue to show thier faces because most already know their narrative and agenda doesn't hold water as they're exposed for hoax after hoax and made up data to play victims while they hide the data that proves them wrong .

You have, unknowingly, given me a cause to dedicate the rest of my life to. I have been a student of history, even outside education, my whole life. It is my passion, and I have wanted to make it my career for over a decade now. (Financial situation is preventing further education at the moment) I will now dedicate my career, as a teacher of history, to the reinforcement of history as the search for the truth, not a blank slate that any powerful group can write on at will. Long before Damnatio Memoriam, the ancient Egytian were also customary of the practice of a new ruler erasing the memory of a previous one, erasing his names on monuments and stele, removing his face from temple and remodeling statues to his own likeness. One of the most notable victim of this was Akhenaton, which ironically is now one of the most famous ancient Pharaoh. Another one was Hatshpsut, which definitely would have earned a movie titled The Woman King.

So many of the younger generation rely on TikToks and entertainment shows for their history and are too lazy to do any basic research. Subscribed and look forward to more! Another aspect of this that needs mentioning is that, like the rest of the "diversity" crowd, the multiple truths proponents don't actually allow anything that goes against their agenda. Demanding the acceptance of multiple truths is merely a transitional phase, whose purpose is to weaken our allegiance to the concept of truth. Once that is achieved, it is much easier to compel the acceptance of an obvious lie as the one and only truth.

There is however perspectives. How a baker in Rome saw the building of the Colosseum would be different than a gladiator, different to a stone mason, different to a member of the ruling classes. The fact it was built remains a fundamental reality, how it was perceived at the time by different individuals is different. If we can understand those different perspectives it is valuable but it doesn't change the fundamental reality.

You are 100% correct. I have loved studying history for 30+ years. I have run into many contradictions of historical and the enemy of true history Hollywood. One off the top of my head that has done so much damage is the mini series Roots. It is shown in history classes in American high schools and it has nothing to do with historical truth. It has created a racial rift in America and only recently some have started learning the historical truth of slavery. Even the author said it was not historical truth, he said he wanted to give his people a mythical story. It's people like this that is causing so many issues. This new wave is just a contentious of what has been happening for as long as Hollywood been around. It is also why I do not call people that act in Hollywood actors but professional liars. Done with my ranting, keep up the great work.

In school I was taught Herodotus was known as the first historian because he used to not just describe what he learned about the past, but also how he learned it, as well as indicate the quality of his source. For many people, such references would not work, simply because of time constraints on the telling of the story. So you often get stories where the standing or reputation of the source is used instead. An older and confident-sounding "expert," reputation supported by a reported link to a university, is then an easy way to establish that commentator's bona fides. Lacking that, we fall into the range of "it is said," "some experts believe," or even "could it be." I'm not saying it is Aliens, ...

In my homeregion, there are dozens over dozens of Castle ruins from standing stonewalls to barely visible ditches. So i am interessted in castles for about fifty years now. I have seen lots of ruins and read(en?) lots of books. Most books tell nearly the same, but sometimes there is a different Idea or theory . In such cases it is good, to know all theories and using the brain to think, what is possible, what is not. Then you can come next (!) to real truth.

I highly recommend, if you have any desire to try to help people like that realize their error (because just telling them nearly never works, and if you get hostile about it they get defensive and just dig their heels in harder: no, you have to let THEM realize they are being stupid and need to re-think things) I would recommend doing something kinda annoying but not illegal: something like, say, handing in an essay that is written backwards. And when they very likely (especially as an actual teacher, not just random person with same thoughts) tell you that it is backwards and therefore it is not done right: you'll get a fail mark for this assignment, so they're giving you a chance to correct this mistake (especially since with this example, most people would just think your printer malfunctioned and you didn't notice so they're pointing it out for you). Well, you should (politely and with a gentle smile and happy tone of voice), refute that no, it IS correct, because it makes sense to you, and there's no such thing as objective reality, right? So, we're both right! Isn't that wonderful? 😃👍 And they'll either clam up instantly, or they'll try to argue that no, it's not the way essays are supposed to be done, ergo it is wrong. Then just keep pointing out that with no objective reality, THEY are wrong, and they're attacking "YOUR truth" which according to them is a major no-no, so, they MUST stop, and MUST accept it as a top-notch essay because YOUR truth is you wrote the best essay ever, and printed it "the right way" at least according to YOUR version of reality and truth. I've done this kind of thing before a handful of times, with various methods (again, stick to something annoying but not an actual CRIME) and with various results. Some were enraged, some puzzled, and a rare 2 of them actually contacted me way later (~7 weeks for one, ~2years for the other) and actually thanked me for making them realize what they were doing. So, on the optimistic notion of "theoretically, the more people we can treat with kindness even when they are essentially an enemy, the better: as kindness is just kinda by definition a net positive on the world for one, and helping THEM *realize* they are wrong compared to something like getting into a heated argument or shouting match: in short they are vastly more likely to believe *themselves* via introspection you can spark, compared to believing a person they already do or soon will consider to be an enemy and what you have to say is seen as an attack (and IS an attack, so, yeah) on them personally; they wont see it as a confrontation of their ideas, they'll take it personally and just turtle even harder.

Thanks so much for advocating for TRUTH-over-FEELINGS, Metatron. Now, more than ever, people need to take a stand against this 'MY truth' ideology. It's opening Pandora's Box. We saw actual devastating consequences of this during the Corona Virus pandemic, where the conflict between science and personal belief led to paranoia, mistrust, and chaos. It was terrifying for me because, as someone who researched horrific events like the Black Death, it was like watching history repeat itself in real time (with human hubris and ignorance proving to be a greater threat than the threat itself). Without the facts and truth, we have no foundation to build and depend on. We are doomed to crumble as a society. I think it's sad that countless generations before us sacrificed their very lives to pursue the Truth. And now we're dismantling that Truth and reverting society back to unstable, chaotic times.

Sadly, at this point you can put me squarely in the "mistrust" category. I'm all for science, but I've already seen so many instances of "science" being twisted to fit certain financially driven narratives. Oil companies funded studies "disproving" climate change, food companies paying for research that shows sugar isn't behind the obesity, diabetes, and heart disease epidemic. Even the original study showing a potential link between autism and vaccination was a total sham designed to drive people towards buying the lead scientist's own vaccine instead! So with so much censorship and suppression of objections, often objections from medical specialists knowledgeable in these fields, surrounding the topic of covid and its vaccinations . . . do I really have any choice but to be distrustful? They got me to take an experimental medication by deliberately misleading me, and I'm supposed to keep trusting them? I'm sorry. I know it's a tangled mess, and I know there was a lot of anti-science and willful ignorance out there. I took a lot of flak for wearing masks and social distancing, and would gladly do so again, but while I am certainly no anti-vaccer I don't think I can say I trust this "science" anymore just yet. I'll try to stay open-minded and see how things go, but . . . yeah.

Lol, okay, Covid was its own thing. And we are still dealing with the after effects of it. But comparing it to the Black Death is a little dramatic. I don't recall stepping over bodies killing over while I am trying to buy meat from the butcher. People would literally die in the streets. People would wail and scream in their houses from the pain of the symptoms. And it's not like entire cities, or 75% of the population died from Cov9d. I know people died -I have known people who have and some who nearly died from Covid. But really, like the Black Death?? How much have you actually studied on it?
