Some advice I've heard, and given, is that "It doesn't matter what 'most people would pay for your original art' because only one person is going to buy it. You don't need to convince a mass of consumers, you need that piece of art to resonate with ONE person and that's it, and they'll be willing to pay you for what it's really worth. You're not competing with Walmart, you're making ART."

I shake my head whenever you start a project, instead of just using wood and resin, you must incorporate the most incredible mind-boggling pattern! I try to carve basic wood into a good sculpture, but YOU HAVE TO go light years beyond our other mere mortal carvers/sculptors!!! It is an absolute joy to watch your videos and work. Interesting fact, those large snails are actually welcome in South African gardens near the coast since they feed on those pesky snails that ruin the plants. Love them.

I really appreciate your take on the financial side of a career in art. I do a ton of textile stuff (knit/crochet/etc) for fun, but have never turned it into a business because pretty much no one wants to pay for 10 hours of labor to knit a hat when you can just buy a machine-knit one. On the other hand, a lot of people I know with sewing businesses (custom dance/skating/etc costumes) say to charge at least minimum wage for your when starting out, and increase from there.
@BMSculptures

Quick tip from a Ceramicist. If you need to get clay out of something like that silicon mold. Wait until its bone dry (Has to be bone dry or it won't work) Once its bone dry fill with water, leave full for about 12 hours just to be sure the water has totally saturated the clay. The clay will turn into a slurry called slip (This is just really runny clay if your clay is slightly damp before you do this is stays as a lump so bone dry is essential) you can then just rinse out the clay by filling and dumping the water a few times. Hope that helps if you ever need to do anything delicate in a tight fitting mould again

Your skill is stellar. Beautiful work. Some of the best designs there are, are from quilt patterns. It might be worth looking into for inspiration. I made a living at making quilts in the past. If you look around there is so much design out there. Even crochet has some unique designs that would work with wood.

Slug mummies optical tentacle, new band name. Seriously great work, the recolour was definitely the right choice. Even bigger props to you for discussing actual pricing, truly revealing.

Surprised you changed the snail, but after seeing the true final result, I'm glad you did. The second attempt at the snail looked so much better with the shell. Brilliant work. First video of yours I've watched, and I'm subbed. Good job

Sluuuuuug Muuuuuummmmy! Now that I have finished the whole video I can fully comment. I, as an artist (even if I haven't sold many pieces), 1,000% believe this piece is worth that price tag. Even if you weren't a former player and established, I would still say that the piece is worth it. I am so glad that I stumbled onto your page. I enjoy seeing your process and love that you give advice and motivation as you voice over your progress. You are one of the few KZbinrs that I put down my own art and fully watch. Keep up the amazing work. I will keep my eye out for your next video.

I would never pay that much, but I think someone out there would. Also, with the amount of hours you put into making this piece, the cost of materials, incredible craftsmanship, i think the price is justified

Oh my goodness, now you can make so many more using your slug mummy! I love both the slugs with and without glitter. However, I agree with you that the wooden shell went better with the clear one because it really allowed the intricate wooden pattern to be the main focal point. The glitter slug would have gone better with a different shell design. Just out of curiosity, did you ever consider having the slug be glow in the dark? It could still be transparent/translucent and the glow in the dark doesn't have to be full strength, allowing it to only emit a soft hint of a luminescent glow, making it seem more mysterious and magical

I really like the first slug body, the waviness, glitter and translucency really made it look "gooey" I'd keep it maybe for another project like if you want to give it another shell.

Before you gave a final price, I had a number in mind. My number was $500 more than what you listed the sculpture for. So I would say that your prices are very reasonable. Can I afford it? No. But that doesn't mean that that is not the value of your artwork. I liked the galaxy slug mummy, but the final sculpture is amazing too!

I love all your work, your passion and enthusiasm, great sense of humor, calm demeanor, and manner of speaking. I also appreciate how you break down how you price your work and elaborate on your entire process and thoughts throughout. ♥ But also, not meaning any offense or pettiness or anything, just forward input from another artist and appreciator of you work: I did VERY much love the pearly slug, but I completely understand wanting to swap it out after it just didn't sit well with you. I honestly might have waited on bonding the pieces, just in case I wanted to test other colors... lol. I'm a sucker for color matching. But, um... while I know it's an opinion and my own taste, I want to try and add that part of this feels objective as well; You use the purple to neutralize the yellowing in the acrylic, which is a brilliant idea... but I feel like this time, it detracts from the project on the whole. By a lot. Again, I understand how the neutral color would bring more attention to the woodwork details, but unfortunately for me, that much attention to the shell brings out the slightly skewed layers of the middle of the carving, where the paler wood X are crooked. And while I know it's hard as heck to get everything aligned perfectly, I think your slug does the whole piece an injustice by emphasizing that imperfection. So, my actually constructive input: I would have gone for a transparent pearl gold, or a softly yellowed ivory with pearl gold mix. Something that reasonably matches the paler wood in the pattern. That way, seeing all of that color pop across the whole piece would help distract from the misalignment, and would still express the great detail through the boldly contrasting light and dark earthy colors. :) ♥
