Forgot to mention that we don't really know the "true" Kasumi at the end of the day, only Sumire's perception of her. The fact Coach Hiraguchi's insight is such a shock to Sumire just further proves that Sumi's narrative bias likely plays a part in how we the players perceive Kasumi. It's not a huge deal in this video, since it's Sumi we're trying to analyze here anyway, so it's just food for thought! 🎮TWITCH: www.twitch.tv/ladyvirgilia 🐤TWITTER: @VirgiliaLady twitter.com/VirgiliaLady 🌟PATREON: www.patreon.com/LadyVirgilia GENSHIN LORE CHANNEL~ kzbin.info

So who is actual Kasumi? Fanfiction writers have been speculating who she actually. She is even called original kasumi yoshizawa in AO3. Because we don't know who actual Kasumi is, if she is alive her actual persobality widly varies. Some stories have her to have wild rard abilities, struggling with Sumire no longer depending on her, having her persona, and even having her own arcana, the Charity arcana which is all about kindness. As for why Sumi has only a small bye bye at end there are two possible reasons; a) they were worried that she had too much screentime in the game. Atlus is trying their best to make Sumire not the next Marie and Marie is criticized fpr being too self inserted in persona 4s story. B) there is tons of hidden unused content. One of it has sumire leaving behind chocolate in jokers bag instead of being datable on valentine's day. It explains why she has a minor role in the goodbye. We do know that atlus listens to feedback about characters and it manifests in future games. In the next spinoff we will probably have much more screentime for the redhead as they know that Sumire has been well recieved much better than Marie. Gymnastics is known to be hard. Training for it is like a full time job like a person has to dedicate like 40 hours per week or more. It is the explanation why she isnt in strikers and why she only had a brief good bye in the true ending. Would you like actual kasumi to appear in the next spinoff? Her return could be explained that she is from another dimension or universe.

@@rommelluna9613 Oh DEFINITELY! I wanna know more about the Original Kasumi Yoshizawa. And how she is an influence in nurturing Sumire. Plus unlike Sumire, Kasumi is more hyper competitive. It would have been better if Joker got a farewell text from Sumire before the end. Though sending pictures of her shrine visit and her picture from her coach could technically count.

Given how Sumi said how "People should solve their own problems and not dependent on the Thieves a lifeline long term" when asked by Akechi on her thoughts on the Thieves, Sumi said that as Kasumi so it may imply that is what the real Kasumi believes which only adds to her flaw and since it's mentioned how Kasumi took the lead for Sumi then that in a way makes Kasumi a bit of a hypocrite with Kasumi unintentionally contributing to her sister feeling worthless.

I like how Sumi is implemented in P5R, especially in the beginning. Her status as an esteemed and welcomed honor student really contrasted with Joker’s status and so he comes across as even more of an outcast. Past that, I think she was implemented in a good way since she comes off as a natural fit in a pre-existing narrative. Even though I would have liked to see more interactions with her and the PTs, it made the scenes where she opened up to Joker about her mental health struggles hit that much harder cause he’s probably one of the only people she actually opened up to. The latter half of her confidant have some of my favorite confidant related events, especially the scene in the clothing store. It was great to see Sumire have fun in a genuine way. And yeah, I think there should have been a goodbye on the last day to explain why Sumire isn’t with the group when Joker leaves. That’s always felt weird to me.

Lady, as frustrating as it is that Sumi doesn’t have a proper farewell here, I still want to say this: Thank you. Thank you so much for giving this beautiful redhead a chance to shine in your video analysis. The concept of On, Giri, and Gaman were dabbled here and there in other vids, but not heavily mentioned as much as this video. So the concepts that apply to each character are as follows: Joker - Criminal Justice System Skull - Bancho, Domestic Abuse Panther - Hafus Fox - Filial Piety Queen - Academics Oracle - Hikikomori Noir - Mukoyoshi Crow - Koseki Violet - “On” (benevolence), “Giri” (obligations), and “Gaman” (perseverence) Violet may not be the easiest character to look into, but I am grateful for you giving her this chance. Anyway, speaking of redheads, I hope you are ready to celebrate Mitsuru’s birthday tomorrow.

To add to my comment in this vid, the reason I wished for Sumire’s journey to end on a similar note like Yugi’s did in Yugioh is because, like Sumire to Kasumi, Yugi always let Atem take the driver’s seat in how to live life to the fullest. What I would love for Sumire to do in her journey is to somehow face Kasumi and challenge her in someway, shape or form. Just like the ceremonial Duel between Yugi and Atem, and how beating Atem allows Yugi to show that he is ready to be in his own. To show that Sumire can live for herself, by herself, and maybe be someone else’s Senpai for a change. Sumire lived and endured pain repaying the gratitude and kindness given by Kasumi, Maruki, and Joker. And now, I wish for her to be the Senpai in someone’s life. Sorry, I was kinda rambling.

Even though I'm Dutch and we have... basically zero of Japan's On/Giri/Gaman conventions (in fact we are the most distanced from them since we just don't *do* hierarchy, even less thhan the rest of the Western world), Sumire felt so relatable. Being a failed gifted child myself, and having an (albeit younger) sibling that has surpassed me in both academics and social networks with me having barely any close friends and after 8 years of studying still not having a single bachelor's diploma, I also felt that my failures were also disrespecting everyone that has ever supported me, and that I should try to be more like my brother to be more successfull. Seeing Sumire's struggles and eventual consolation with her situation and self really helped me put my own situation into perspective and helped me on focussing on how I should focus on what makes *myself* special, and stop trying to do the same as my brother... because I am not him, and never will be.

It's a common enough dynamic; Japan is uniquely mostly in that it has formalized it in the cultural consciousness with explicit words. (Even in other Confucian-charged cultures that share the same basic concepts, it's not nearly that formalized.)

I think sumire going back to the Kasumi style felt like less of a dissonance to her character but more of a remembering as she still acts like herself and socializes with the others. I think Sumire goes back to wear Kasumi's style as a way to show her reconciliation with the mental image she has of her sister. It's a way of saying "I am myself, but I carry my dear sister in my heart with me" or something like that. Also, ponytal and contact lenses are straight up more practical than mane with glasses, which goes with her gymnastic thing.

Yes! [Akihiko voice] I've been waiting for this! Time for my obligatory giant comment! (I have a lot to say about Persona characters) I knew Hashino had left, but I didn't know he'd left when Royal was in development. Weird things is, I think Royal and Strikers have vastly improved writing compared to vanilla P5, but that's probably not due to him leaving. Two of the writers who were on Royal but not vanilla were also the main writers for Strikers, Toru Yorogi and Yusuke Nitta, and I really hope they continue to write for P6. Calling her "Sumi"... that's a neat way of getting around the spoiler, I'm surprised I don't see it as often. So on the big twist, can we just give MAJOR acting props to Laura Post? She essentially has to play THREE completely different characters: Sumire-As-Kasumi, the real Kasumi, and the real Sumire. To be fair to Sumi, I suck at the Battling Cages too. Dang thing is brutal. One thing I loved about Fake!Kasumi is just how subtly WRONG a lot of her Confidant felt. There was always something "off", a kind of uncanny-valley about her personality that kept bothering me, but with the reveal that she's really a deeply depressed girl pretending to be her dead sister as a twisted coping mechanism, it all made sense. We can see that with her over-the-top, almost Magical Girl-looking, Persona awakening. This is NOT the painful "facing herself" she needed, just an artificial coping mechanism that's only going to hurt more in the end. The "respect for anyone older" aspect of East-Asian values is interesting to me. P5 shows where it can go wrong and that's something a lot of westerners latch on to, but there's a flipside to it. Asian cultures respect the elderly far more than the west does. When my grandmother spent her final years in a nursing home, the most caring staff to her were all of East-Asian backgrounds, and she and my mother grew very annoyed at how dismissive westerners could be of the aging members of society. (Not so relevant to this vid, just wanted to mention that) Cu Cuchulainn and Scathach were mentor and student, wonder if them being encounters in Maruki's Palace is symbolic. What little we see of Kasumi and Sumire's relationship is interesting. Yes Kasumi was showing "on", but I feel she was doing it in an unintentionally condescending way that was ultimately hurting Sumire mentally. A lot went unsaid between then and I'm sure they could have worked things out if Sumire had the courage to tell her about it, but it went bottled up for so long that the traffic incident happened. Sumire seems to have had a bit of supressed resentment over never having her own feelings considered, always being stuck in her sister's shadow (in more ways than one, talking about Persona). Again, Kasumi wasn't a bad person, it was just a tragedy of unexpressed feelings. (You basically said that in the "Gaman" section) On "gaman", I wonder if it plays into tropes of the traditional Shounen protagonist, always persevering to get stronger. This character trope has fallen out of favour in anime recently, replaced by the Isekai protag who already starts strong and only gets stronger with little effort. I wonder why? Wish-fulfilment, gaman falling out of favour in society, or a bit of both? Sadly there's a bit of an aversion to seeking therapy in the west too, but it's definitely worse in Japan. I held off on going to therapy for a long time and I feel my university years would have been a LOT happier if I'd done it sooner. I always had that feeling of "if I go, I'm admitting that I'm crazy." Side note: the clothing store owner talking about "carnivore" and "herbivore" energy... if I'm remembering my Japanese classes right, those are dating slang over there. Coach Hiraguchi's a pretty underrated character and I wish we got to see more of her. Good point about her portraits reverting at the end of the game. And also 23:53 YES, THIS THIS THIS THIS!!!!! That bothered me so much of my first playthrough of Royal I had to ask people "did I miss Sumire's goodbye or does she really not get one?!" It made me think of a Friends quote from the 2nd last episode. Sumire: "I don't get a goodbye?! Sure it's hard to say goodbye to 22 Confidants, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye gh- IT'S PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIBLE! It's not like I awakened my Persona with you, saved the world with you, dated you oh wait a minute wait a minute I DID ALL THOSE THINGS!!" So overall, Sumire feels like a Persona 4 character arc in Persona 5's world. While all the other PTs had an abuser they had to learn to stand up to, Sumire's abuser was HERSELF. (Some would argue Maruki, but imo what Maruki did was a "seemed like a good idea at the time" that really did prevent her from committing suicide in the short-term, but we'll get into him later) This might not be true of everyone, but these kinds of characters are the ones I really relate to, as someone who suffers from self-esteem issues and, not exactly a fear of failure but more... a "fear everything you do is a failure"? General feelings of worthlessness. I also struggled with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder all through university without knowing I had it until I saw a therapist (it is NOTHING like pop culture says it is, I'd recommend looking it up on medical sites. It's more about intrusive, distressing thoughts than obsession with order and cleaning), so in a way my own mind was literally my enemy for a lot of my life and that's a big part of why Persona 4's Shadows used to scare me so much. The stigma around therapy is awful, because it was only after it that I started to turn things around. (This is why Maruki's a favourite of mine too but we'll get to him later) At the same time, I'm not a big Joker/Sumi shipper, even though a ton of people are. She came SO CLOSE to dethroning Makoto as my favourite romance at Rank 8, but then Rank 9 happened. It's not Sumire's fault, I just came to realize I really don't like how Joker is portrayed/written during P5's romantic Confidant routes, that desk slam and eye stare felt more creepy than endearing to me. I think they wanted him to be a "carnivore", a suave, charming rogue, like a lot of literary Phantom Thieves, but his forcefulness in romance always felt a bit unsettling to me, and with Sumire's mental issues it all added up to a big "nope" at that point. There's also my general issue with romancing characters with mental issues: it can easily feel like "they only changed because of love", which is a big disservice to their growth. I still romanced her on my first Royal playthrough because she's the new favoured romance, but I'll stick to Makoto for future playthroughs. And that's the end of my "essay". Congratulations on finishing the party's analysis videos (rip Mona). I'm really looking forward to the Palace Rulers of course, but also more Trails analysis.

I can't say much about 95% of your post besides "I wholeheartedly agree," but because this is the internet I'm going to take a single point and dissect it with the grace of a 9th grader given a frog in biology class. (!!Royal spoilers to follow, same as those in the video!!) You mention the rank 9 interactions putting you off because they felt more creepy than endearing, and let me emphasize first that that is perfectly legitimate. As a fan who is both western and male, I'm generally indifferent to the "kabe don"/wall pin trope (though the anime "Science Fell in Love and I Tried to Prove It" did a hilarious job deconstructing it for me), and if it's not to your taste, I can't tell you otherwise. I do, however, want to point out a couple ways the game both uses and subverts the trope in that scene, which I found clever. First, the protagonist doesn't actually trap Sumire, since she's sitting across the counter from him. This is nice, because otherwise the scenario can feel, as TVTropes puts it, "a bit rapey." He may lean towards her, but Sumire is physically able to withdraw, and while she was flustered at first, she freely chooses to reciprocate the action. This helped, at least in my perception of the scene. Second, it's one of the few times the protagonist initiates physical intimacy with another character. Throughout the game the protagonist rarely, if ever, moves himself closer to anyone else. In Japanese cultural context (though LadyVirgilia could speak with better authority on this than I), personal space is sacrosanct. It's lampshaded a few times, such as when Makoto asks permission to hold the protagonist's hand during the storm and Sojiro remarks on their closeness afterwards, or how most Valentine's dates ask before sitting next to him in the booth. But even in romantic circumstances, the protagonist moving himself into another person's personal space is vanishingly rare. It's almost uncharacteristically demonstrative (at least when he's outside of the Metaverse), and, again in cultural context, it's the closest thing we get to an actual voiced line of "I really like you, too." I may be reading too much into it, but I choose to interpret that reluctance towards intimacy as part of the protagonist's character. Given his circumstances, he has to be a little gunshy. In fact, the parallels between his hometown encounter with Shido and rescuing "Kasumi" from the creep in Shibuya are explicit, and almost certainly intentional. I like to think the fact that an honest friendship emerges from the second encounter goes a long way towards helping the protagonist through some of his own issues, not least because it helps balance the scales in any relationship that may follow. I share your distaste for any hint of "fixed by love" regarding Sumire's mental wellness, which is why I adore her rank 10 scene. Whether or not they're in a romantic relationship, he is supporting her and inspiring her as she pursues her dream, which is both more realistic and far, far more valuable to her as a person. TL;DR: Kabe don can be creepy, but I like to think Sumire is helping the protagonist almost as much as he's helping her, and that makes for a solid foundation to a friendship, or a relationship if you want to ship them.

@@vellaen8290 I see you points. The thing is, it's not JUST Sumire's romance route where I find Joker's characterization a bit off. There's lines like the infamous "I'm a teacher, you're my student > That's the best part." It's not a common view but I find Joker often comes off as a bit of a sleazebag in this game's romance routes and of all the persona protags he's the one I can actually picture the harem route being somewhat in-character for.

@@BigKlingy Yeah, that's one reason why I have mixed feelings towards P5's theme of rebellion, in this case, it felt like Joker was being audacious, he was just going against what I think is a major, if not universal, taboo in many countries, with an attitude of "just because". Like, just as in real life, I get the vibe in some instances of this game that some of the characters are merely "rebels without a cause" - instead of truly opposing abuse and injustice of some sort, they are just doing what they want solely out of a sense of power from disobeying someone or something, even if that source is not actually harmful.

Argh. It's good to know I'm not the only one disappointed with the lack of Sumire in the ending. I know she's a new character but she joined the Phantom Thieves so late and missed so many romantic events as well. They really should have kept the road trip ending and added Sumire in as well. Also, regarding the loss of her glasses in Rank 10, I felt it as well. I think Atlus should have given the player the choice to change her outfit in the real world via the Equipment menu. I feel that seeing Sumire with her glasses and original hair-down look with renewed confidence would have been triumphant indeed. Of course, keep her original ponytail look as Violet. I always took Sumi recovering the tied hair style as another sign of her being comfortable with herself. I believe she wore her hair down and used the glasses as a small act of rebellion against her sister's desire to look the same. She doesnt need the glasses and the hair down makes her look like she is hiding herself. She ties her hair back up because, damn it, it looks good on her! She doesnt have to shy away from a hair style because her sister used it! That's my interpretation at least. Also, while probably not intentional, I love the meta narrative of Kasumi having the exact same design as female Joker, being called "the one everyone wanted" and getting killed so Sumire could live.

Sumi!!!!!!!!!! She’s very interesting. I’m glad you noted the change in teams from vanilla to Royal, because I do think Royal’s approach is to keep the original themes and intentions intact, but to add in new themes that add new contexts and alter the overall message.

I feel like, while the original P5 is about rebelling against society and rejecting expectations of you, Royal is more about what comes after that: what do YOU want to be.
@grapes9h5

@@BigKlingy absolutely. Which is why it works and is the superior version, because the whole original is still contained within it (including that original ending as one of the many alternate endings) but it adds on the extension of the 3rd semester, while also seeding in the ideas and themes to set it up, throughout. So, that when you arrive at the Royal true ending, you’re concluding the whole story, but much more comprehensively. As you say, the new themes take it a step further and offers something more reflective and deeper.

I didn’t know much about sibling dynamics in Japan before this. It was an interesting look into the twins’s relationship that I never considered. You explained everything really clearly! On a note related to the ponytail and glasses, I wish her thief outfit didn’t look so close to Joker’s. I know that it’s supposed to be a reflection of his influence on her life and that it shows that she tends to follow others before listening to herself. I get that. I just really want her to have her own color pallet and design influences like the others. Really give that ragtag feel of the team. In my opinion, the PT shouldn’t look like they’re dressed to go to the same place. It’s just a nitpick of a really good story.

Speaking in general (as I lack the proper cultural context to comfortably speak on Japan in specific)I think we en-mass need to examine failure from a new lens. Failure - It happens, and I think to fail shows that one has tried. And to try is something that always deserved the utmost support, and respect, as it takes a lot of strength and willpower simply to try things at times. Failure is not a sign of weakness...and does it matter that much if someone fails? What matters more is what is done with that failure, and the ability to after taking the needed time being able to rise back up and to be able to get back in there! So in a sense being supportive of each other, and never mocking or taunting another for failure would go a long way in reducing the fear of failure - and respecting any for trying alone, and when failure does occur being there to support them, so it's that much easier to rise once more. In general so many troubles could be averted, so much pain scooped away, and problems reduced in magnitude for all of us on this odd little blue planet amidst the stars by simply being more supportive of one another and taking the time to sit down, and listen to one another in times of trying. Listening also leads to understanding which is another important power that leads to good.

What I did find somewhat humorous is that Sumire's cooking is good while Kasumi's... isn't. When me and my friend first watched that scene where Maruki changes her cognition and "Kasumi" says something about not knowing why she even brought up cooking as she's bad at it, I turn to my friend and go "Oh... It makes so much more sense now."

A chunk of the persona 5 fanbase actually didn't like Sumire's story arc, but I feel like you really have to go in depth with it, or you have to experience it for yourself. I relate to Sumire SO much because I have an older brother that people expect me to be like (especially my uncles and aunts). The only main differences between Sumire and I is that I'm not suicidal/depressed, and my brother is alive and well. This video and Sumire's arc in general guided me through so much of what I should be rather than what I THINK people want me to be. Yeah sure, I'm 2 years behind my brother, and sure, people think "unga bunga brothers = same person", but I know that we have our similarities (in fact we're actually VERY similar to each other) and we have our differences, but that also means that we both have our own strengths and interests like how Sumire was the person who cooks rather than Kasumi (I think, I may have forgorten). Thank you ATLUS, and thank you LadyVirgilia.

This is really a video on why the Sumire look is the best look. 😎 All jokes aside, with how hard Kasumi/Sumire was pushed in royal I felt like I had to romance her to get the most out of the game. I felt cheated by her ending when compared to some of the other options.

Ah yes, my favorite character in the game! I had already figured out that Sumi was my favorite character long before I played the game, but third semester improved her infinitely, both ignoring and including my own personal bias. Watching this video doesn't just make me realize why I like her, it's making me realize just how similar to her I can be. Not necessarily with the sibling bit, I'm an only child after all, but even looking to her character pre-third semester as "Kasumi", the fear of failure and insecurity that always comes up regardless of putting on a brave face hits a nerve. Regardless of what the context is, there is always a chance that something happens where I worry that I'm gonna do something completely wrong or won't be able to do it without help. I'm so used to being successful and not having much difficulty that whenever I'm unsure of something, depending on what the context is it can do anything from slightly upset me all the way to making me crumble almost instantly. It's rough, and I'm incredibly glad that I have people to look out for me like how Joker does with Sumi, although I definitely still struggle with wanting to appear strong so no one worries about me. Sumi's actual arc in the third semester doesn't hit me _as_ hard, but it still hits since I feel like I always have to meet someone's standards. I have to meet familial standards in school and extracurriculars, and often meet my own standards with the same things that can be much higher than my family's expectations. I always feel self-conscious of what I say around friends to make sure I don't come off badly or even just say something stupid that I can be made fun of for, which feels like a failure to me no matter how small, and loops back to that fear of failure. Pretty much, I get now that Sumi is my favorite character in the game not just because she's well written, but because I relate closest to her. I feel like I'm wearing a mask more often than not to look strong just like how "Kasumi" did for a majority of the game, even though it more often than not feels better to throw away that mask (funny reference even if the song is like the exact opposite of Sumi's arc) and work through my issues with someone else like how Sumi learnt to in the third semester with the help of the Thieves. It always hits different when you realize you've had similar experiences to a character you've been following in a story for who knows how long, and it hits even harder when it's your favorite character in the story. Admittedly even if Sumi wasn't my favorite character to start she probably would be now, but she has been from the very beginning so it hits especially hard. I don't think a story will ever hit much harder for me than the third semester of P5R did, mainly because I played and finished P5R during a rough patch mentally, and understanding exactly why it's hit as hard as it has is a feeling like no other.

Oh yes the character who I somehow fell in love with, twice. I recently just finished my first and second play through of persona five royal back in November and I pretty much fell in love with her immediately, she was so adorable, she reminded me of so many of the friends I had growing up and when third semester rolled around… My notes from this day were one line, I feel like my soldiers shriveled up and died… It was a heartbreaking realization and then going through the rest of the ranks made me both really happy and really sad for many of the interactions because subconsciously I noticed all the inferiority complex stuff she was doing; it really hit hard since I’ve had my fair share of those kinds of thoughts since I’m the younger sibling of a college graduate, they have a masters degree and they have a well paying job out in California. I felt really good to see her confidence slowly but surely go up and how happy and grateful she was if you romance her. I was pretty upset that I didn’t even notice that she had a small interaction at the very end of the game because my friends and I were laughing at each other for reasons that I will not get into because it involves clowning on my one friend, I only realize the second time we went through that she actually said goodbye to you if that means anything. So yeah she’s probably one of my favorite characters in this entire game and in any recent story I’ve seen; shout out to Laura post performance that’s for sure.

The thing about 'sumi that I'd have liked to see is more integration with the original P5 plot, so it didn't feel like you were getting most of her story 100 hours in. This is a general comment about the Royal plot in general, I think, even though I know that a lot of the Royal plot is dependent on the final stages of the OG plot. I'd have liked to see Kasumi get integrated into the PT during the main game, and have a bit more situations where you're in and out of what ends up being Maruki's palace as Maruki's social link advances--though that might end up spilling the beans early I guess. There could have been a good opportunity to foreshadow/hint at Maruki becoming an antagonist after Joker's conversation with him about Mementos for example. Basically, while they integrated Kasumi and Maruki pretty well, it could still be better. And while it didn't really register to me, I can see the problem with Sumire reverting to Kasumi's style after rank 10--though I think it's less problematic at that point because she's at least doing it consciously versus as a result of Maruki's delusion.

Amazing analysis. I agree entirely with your irritations about Sumire towards the end. When she reverts back to the Kasumi style at the end of her confidant I was like: "Cool, I sort of get why you would tie your hair up to honor Kasumi (as she mentions in her phone call to Joker) but I don't get why you would ditch the glasses. Surely, she wears those for a reason." And I feel that at the end she's conveniently written out throughout the narrative of because of her gymnastics training. If Atlus were to go this route where she wasn't present on the final day because she was at training then it would have been cool to get a moment where we see her rushing after Joker before he leaves so that she could have a proper goodbye instead of the short encounter they had bumping into each other.

No one has pointed this foreshadowing at all. Probably because it’s so close to the beginning. When Sojiro was driving Joker to school the first and only time, he mentions a 15 year old girl who died in an accident. That was Kasumi. When I replayed the game it blew my mind.

When I was playing, I took her mentioning that her body not working the way she wants it to as being related to puberty. Because as your body changes and grows, the physical things tend to not work the way you have had them wired before, and balance/trained movements can become awkward. So yeah with that explanation all resolved in my head during the early confidant, I was pretty surprised by the reveal in third semester. As far as narratively, I really liked that reveal. As far as believeability, it was very very low, because there's no way at least some, if not most, students wouldn't have known about the real Kasumi; and thus even if somehow none of the PT knew about it, the rumor mill would have been very harsh toward her and everyone would have learned about it pretty quick.

Thanks for this video. Sumi is by far and away one of my favorite characters in media. Going through her confidant and broke me multiple times. Particularly when she talked about not knowing how to be Sumi. One of the things I struggled with the most after coming out of the worst of my depression was remembering how I used to act. I could only think of the fixations that I had developed or deepened as a way to cope. Even then I questioned if those were legitimate or not. I forgot a lot about my mannerisms. And all of that was terrifying. Seeing the way Sumi interacted with those feelings really struck home. It hurt when I saw how desperate she was during her duel with Joker. It also hurt to see her become so listless after being rescued from the palace. The way she acted there really resonated with my experience. A desire to just be left alone and to ignore the terrible things you're thinking of. What really sold her character for me though was how she learned to deal with those feelings. She doesn't suddenly get better or remember/discover how to be Sumi. Instead she starts finding little things that she enjoys, liking teaching Joker gymnastics stuff or getting her own clothes. Eventually she's able to redevelop her identity enough to become her own gymnast again. This mirrored some of the steps that helped me reach a much healthier mental state. I stopped worrying about who the old me was, and focused on who I was now. Seeing her embrace the support she had around her was also very satisfying. One last thing Having some understanding of those feelings made me immediately hate Maruki. His decision to alter Sumi's perception stood out as disgusting quackery. I appreciate that the game also supported this idea by making it clear that Sumi's mental state had been possibly made worse as a result of preventing her from coming to terms with her feelings. As a result he's one of my favorite villains ever. I've never been able to simultaneously hate and sympathize with an antagonist as much as him.

I'm late to comment on this, but I just finished Royal and found this video. Excellent stuff. I don't have a lot to say that hasn't already been said in comments but the last part of your video I can just say I wholeheartedly agree and was SUPER disappointed that she went back to the "Kasumi" look and that she doesn't get a goodbye at all. I was literally running around the game for so long trying to find her that I had to look up if she actually even got a goodbye. Such a bummer. For the 'going back to Kasumi' look, I wonder if that's one of the holdovers of Hashino leaving, since a lot of those scenes were similar in design, I wonder if they might have lumped that in first before writing in the detail of her story arc/confidant, and maybe those were just the sprites they had ready and didn't have time/didn't want to redesign those scenes/sprites. I really don't know, just something I'm thinking about. Someone else mentioned in the comments that she feels like a P4 character in P5 and that's so spot on. After I finished the game I thought nearly the same thing-- having to confront your Shadow (or be the Shadow, in this case) and fight against the most painful parts of yourself that you don't want to acknowledge exist, and the growing through that in the confidant/social link. I would dare say that her confidant is even better written than many of the P4 characters, but that gets into a whole can of worms about P4's writing that I won't take up space talking about here haha. I said I didn't have a lot to say and then said all this... but I'll end by saying, again, great work and thank you for posting! :)

I personally feel it would have been better if sumire had gotten a different persona, a unique outfit and kept her hair down after her true awakening. So, it really bothers me that Yu gets this heartfelt sendoff where almost all of his new friends are crying at his departure and Ren gets nothing because his friends are too busy giving the police the run around. I didn't understand it in the least and wish it really would have been more like Persona 4's ending. And Sumire's part seems oddly distant if she was your waifu. But at the same time, she's the only one who gets to see Joker off properly. Or, at least, see him off more properly than the others.

24:26 How would I fix both Sumire and the New Ending cutscene? Sumire: If we only talk about the outcome of her character arc, I would obviously make her keep her glassses at least, the hairstyle isn't much of an issue, because when she's in the Metaverse as Violet, she already ties her hair like Kasumi (but she looks better with her hair untied in my opinion). About the rest of her character, I wish she joined the Party during either Shido and/or Yaldabaoth's arc to make her have more interactions with the other PTs (instead of just Joker and Akechi). It would also have been nice if she was more time as Sumire, and less as "Kasumi". New Ending Cutscene: For starters, I'm using the Vanilla Ending as the template for the one I'm building up (I hate the New Ending so much, and nothing will change my mind about that, so I'd like to discuss this as less as possible), and taking the only good part of the New Ending as an adittion. Right after leaving Le'Blanc, Joker would cross paths with Maruki, and he would give him the same speech from the New Ending, before leaving on their way. Then when Joker arrives Shibuya, he would encounter the PTs (and Sumire), and they all leave together on the van (Sumire can perfectly sit in-between Haru and Futaba) to share one last moment of companionship and friendship like in the Original Ending. That way, not only Sumire's last scene would feel by far more proper, but also she would feel as part of the team, instead of the left out one.

With the ending she dose get a Subtle one. it the phone msg before white day with the 2 photo. My fix to the ending would be when you go out of the cafe on the Talk to everyone day you get the msg Maybe change the text a little. what I would change about the ending cutscene is Have the cutseen switch to the man in black suit get out of the car and run up the train station or an Announcement That the train is leaving soon. This helps understand why their talk together was so short if joker was in a hurry the not much time to talk. The final thing I would do is make the email that he get On the phone has a pink background This would make you think that it is an email from sumi and that it was a proper good-bye But because of time/cops she couldn't say it there.

I'm sorry, but this video just proves how flawed the concept of this character is, aren't they twins? what difference of their age is? Few seconds? And we expected to take all this older younger dramma and dynamic seriously, like one has more life experiences than another, there is implied hostility between them like when one was born another started getting less attention, but from begging they always had one another, so the theme of this character makes no sense.

Maybe this is me being petty, but the Okumura arc's bad writing, Sumire's reverted hairstyle, and Sumire not having that proper goodbye makes me want a Persona 5 Royal Patch, but we all know that won't happen... dammit.

The Ryuji vs Morgana scenes were lazy imo. I mean, the idea wasn’t necessarily bad, but they clearly didn’t know how to start that arc naturally unlike the 4 previous ones.

@@sergiosalazar8702, that and the last spotlight. I mean first of all it was very uncharacteristic of Morgana to start arguing with the group, I kind of expected that from Ryuji instead to be honest. Also that last spotlight should have been for Haru, not Morgana, though everyone has already agreed on that part. Edit: Also Ryuji hasn't given a proper apology unlike Morgana (based on what I remember).

Personally, I figured the "lacking" feeling of Sumi's farewell in Royal's ending cutscene gave off the vibe of "As with everything else in life, you might not get all your goodbyes, your closure the way you want in life, sometimes you'll have to live with whatever way they did end".

I really love how Joker is a self-insert character. It makes every romance perfect for each player. I can't see Joker with anyone but Kasumi. Yet most people see Makoto as Joker's perfect match. Here's my bad take: I think it's because I think Makoto is so generic. (Maybe I need to watch the video on her.)

I like this concept. My first time seeing someone allow themselves to die while they become someone else was in a visual novel that I won't name.

Do you think Kasumi had remorse forn ot noticing Sumire's depression ? That's why she saved Sumire even if the danger was so high and lost her life in the process. And are they really twins ? The text is confusing. They do look similar and use the same voice actress. Sumire said she was so little when Kasumi started gymnastic. That she didn't understand. Well if they were twins she would be really younger. But are twins in japan clearly see themselve as older and younger ? The only other examples of that I saw were in Fatal Frame 2, with Mio and Mayu being identical twin sisters. But Mio is always calling Mayu, Onne-chan in Japanese. But for weird reason don't have the same voice actresses. Identical twins have the same voice. Non identical twins are geneticly different so they can't have the same voice... Well it would make more sense if Kasumi and Sumire were identical twins. Because, how could she even thinbk about being Kasumi if they weren't identical. If they were identical, she could expect to have the same physical abilities as her sister. What do you think ? Good analysis ! Sumire is by far my favourite character in P5R :)

Indeed, what a wonderful analysis for Sumi, Virgilia! ...Which makes it so heartbreaking that, believe it or not, there are people out there who hate her character and think little to nothing of it. It's as if, do they even realize that all the things they're saying about her out of universe are things that so crippled her self-esteem in universe? One example, and the comments thereof, here: www.reddit.com/r/Persona5/comments/gn8k80/8_reasons_why_i_dislike_kasumi_yoshizawa/ So anyone who comes across this, if you feel up to it, feel free to dissect these... criticisms.
