I'm seeing a couple of new folks joining. Welcome! I made this video over three years ago from my love of Kids Inc and what I knew at the time. Although there's so much I've learned about the show since then, it's one of my favorite videos I've done. I'm really happy to see people enjoying it, especially those who actually lived through the show. Hope the nostalgia brings some magic to your day 🪄 Thank you so much for watching!

Just came across this video. I don't think I ever actually saw this show when I was young, but have watched things here and there on KZbin. It's been years since I've listened to Martika and still thought to myself "that's Martika!" When the little bit of the intro played 😆 Whoa I had no idea Murphy appeared on the show. That's so cool. What a talented human she was.

I was 5 when this show started. I watched till I was around 10. I loved it. One of my favorites. And you are absolutely right about there being next to no information about it online. I remember trying to do some research about 20 years ago. It’s sad that Disney isn’t utilizing this and some of the amazing Wonderful World of Disney Sunday night original movies. But that’s another story.😅 Thanks for the video!💚

Big ups to Martika, or Marta Marrero, who played 'Gloria' on the show. She had a huge hit in the 80's with the song Toy Soldier. While widely considered a "one hit wonder," you couldn't escape this song in the late 80's. She too deserves to be mentioned along side the other success stories of the show.

Thank you for this! I went to Elementary school with Renee. I met her when I was in the 5th grade and she was in the 4th. She and I had lunch together a few times. I didn’t know she sang until she performed “White Christmas” at our school’s talent show. Then one Sunday morning, I decided to watch this new show, Kids, Inc. I was so surprised when I saw Renee! I had to move and changed schools soon after and never saw Renee again. I have wondered over the years what had happened to her, and I’m so happy to see some updates. The main thing I always remembered about her was how sweet she was. I was considered the geek and had no friends. I had just come out of foster care and was trying to get used to being home with my family and was way too shy and embarrassed about my family life to talk to anyone. I was at the school for less than half the year, and she was the only one who ever ate lunch with me. I would have remembered her fondly, even if she hadn’t become famous.

I honestly think The All-New Mickey Mouse Club pulled from the Kids Incorporated model. I'm the youngest of my parent's kids and one of my older sisters was in choir and watched Kids Incorporated and turned me on to it in 1984. The All New Mickey Mouse Club started in 1989 and was more of a kid's sketch comedy show like Nickelodeon's " All That", which came later. The kids on The Mickey Mouse Club didn't so much as play themselves but performed in comedy sketches and did musical performances of modern songs but they also later formed an actual musical group within the show that would tour and perform in real life. Kids Incorporated on the other hand followed the normal sitcom format of storytelling. But all of the kids on both shows were required to be able to sing, dance, and act. Both of these shows were iconic and the reason that I later got into the choir and sang in my personal life almost every day. We really do need all of these shows to be on streaming platforms along with shows like PBS's Ghost Writer, Reading Rainbow, Are You Afraid of the Dark, My Brother and Me, and many others.

The New Mickey Mouse Club was based on the original Mickey Mouse Club. My mom worked at a video store in the late 80s and rented the old ones for us. It was horrific and uncool, but she never brought home anything we actually wanted to watch. 😂

Kids Inc getting folded into Disney followed the same path as You can’t do that on Television getting folded into Nickelodian … In fact Disney and Kids Inc and Nick and YCDTOT sort of followed the same competitive rivalry among its fan base as its parent companies… Nickelodeon was “basic cable” while Disney was premium subscription and their was at time a distinct Us Versus them hostility in higher grade school and jr High. Disney was like the KID HBO/Cinemax if you had Disney it meant your parents were rich enough to have TWO premium channels…. At the time i was a Navy Brat and my father was an NCO not an officer… Disney is what the “officers kids” had… Nickelodeon was for chiefs and petty officers…. And that rivalry was Never more evident than when disney would have its biannually week of free promotional programming… and we would get our “taste” of Disney…. Disney kids would go silent for a few weeks then largely talk about and engage us NICK kids with stuff that happened AFTER disney cut off… Meanwhile us Nick kids looked down on the Disney Kids as the rich kids that had all the cool toys, but lacked the earn talent to use them to their full potential …. In contemporary terms you could say we were team Griffendor and disney kids were team slytherin with their matching Nimbus 2001s …. IRONICALLY the thing that made Kids Inc “cool” was the same reason why it faded out of syndication… all that music copyright

I was about to post a comment about this myself. It started out in first run syndication, but ratings were too low to keep it on the air, until The Disney Channel acquired the show. In Chicago, it was on WPWR-TV, then on Channel 60, and was on Sunday mornings, usually around 6am. After the Disney Channel acquired the show, I no longer had access to the show, because my parents couldn't afford to add Disney Channel to the cable TV subscription, as it was a premium channel, until 1998, when then TCI Cable made it a basic Channel in 1998.

it was! That's how I discovered it. Then I couldn't find it again, and re-discovered it during those free weekends that cable channels would put on to convince you to subscribe. It came on right after "Donald Duck Presents" (because the theme song would get recorded sometimes at the beginning of Kids, Inc).

I watched kids inc from the beginning I was just a toddler but I loved it. Had this weird baby man crush on Ryan lambert and then in 87 when he was in monster squad I had to see the movie. My mom drove me two hours to the nearest movie theater that was playing it. We lived in rural Alaska at the time on an army post. We had cable but the post movie theater could really only show a couple movies at a time and monster squad was t one of them. So we drove into Fairbanks I think 2 plus hours just for my to see this movie I was likely to young to see with Ryan lambert. I wanted him to be my big brother lol. It’s weird to remember that far back. Still love that movie and the kids inc theme song always gets me pumped! Thank you!

There was a mandate in the 80s that all kids content had to be educational in some way. That’s why all of the cartoons at the time have some kind of moral at the end of each episode, like He man, She Ra and GI Joe. “And knowing is half the battle” that mandate is also where the “the more you know” star comes from.

I still watch my favorite episodes of Kids Inc to this day...It takes me back to my childhood. I remember having the biggest fan crush on Martika (Gloria). Her voice was amazing, her acting was on another level from the other kids and the camera loved her....I was so excited when her first single 'More Than You Know' debuted at the start of her solo career...but sadly I think Prince getting involved in her music messed everything up for her...She didn't need him or his help in my opinion. Sad that her attempts to make it back into the mainstream a few years back didn't work out..I'm just happy knowing that we will always be able to look back at her unmatched talent and potential as a benchmark for what a natural born superstar really looks like ...Love you Martika ♥️...and great vid Cristy. Great video! FYI, Singer Shanice Wilson literally just did a podcast (R &B Money Podcast) and she talked about the fact that she was on season 1 of kids incorporated. I never knew she was on the show. Just thought I'd let you know just in case you want to hear her talk about it.

Kids Inc was my favorite show growing up in the 80s! The talent on those first few seasons especially was fantastic. I think I still want to sing like Martika! I love that you made this video. My sisters and I watched Kids Inc, and then MMC, everyday after school from like 1990 to 1992. I was so influenced by this show and the characters. Such a fun trip down memory lane, thank you for such an awesome tribute to this great show. Also, I feel like Jennifer Love Hewitt started to be called Love by her 2nd or 3rd season. I always wondered why they called her Robin!

When growing up and we got the "Free week" of Disney Channel, I always was glued to the TV when kids incorporated was on. I remember there was one episode where the focus character was singing this really passionate ballad and I just fell in love. But that was like 30 years ago and I have no memory of who it was! I loved this show and I had dreams of being a Kids Incorporated kid even though I couldn't sing, dance, or play an instrument.

I used to watch this in grade school when it was originally on. It was on right before Mickey Mouse Club on The Disney Channel. MMC was actually my favourite of the two, but I really liked this one as well (sort of like how Seinfeld was on right before Friends, and Seinfeld was my favourite, but Friends was also very good. By the time I got to be around 5th grade or so, I was starting to feel a little too old for the show (the plots felt simplistic and childish) but I kept watching a bit longer because 'Love Hewitt' joined the cast and I had the *biggest* crush on her. I stopped watching both shows by the time I got to middle school, though. So I wouldn't have seen anything 1992-onward. This analysis is a lot more detailed than I thought of when I used to watch it - 5 songs with 1 original song, 3 on stage, etc. I didn't really know anything about popular music when I was that age, so as far as I was concerned, they may as well have all been original songs.

I have never seen any of your videos, but when I saw that this was a video on Kids Incorporated, I had to tune in! When I heard you say that you grew up watching the show I did a double take because I watched it whenever I could & was eleven by the last season and I know we're not the same age. I think it's awesome that your parents thought ahead and taped the show for you to watch later! I wish that I had been able to see more of the show, my family didn't really get cable until the time where it was just MMC playing but even though I like both, I think I have always preferred Kids Inc. Thank-you for this trip down memory lane and if you can find more content to make a part 2 then I will definitely check it out!

Finally! A comprehensive look at the cast of Kids Inc.! I grew up in the New York City area and the NBC affiliate would show episodes at 7:30 AM on Saturday mornings. I was never up that early as a kid, but when I was, I turned on the show. This would have been around 1986 or 1987, and I am not sure if they were only the pre-Disney episodes.

The whole explination about how they were on CBS and then moved to Disney Channel kind of explains a mystery for me. I remember watching this when I was maybe 9/10 years old. Maybe not avidly, but enough to remember the theme song and some characters. I remember it kind of just disappearing one day, and I figured it went off the air. It was disappointing as I had started getting into it. However, back in that era, Disney was on Cable, and Cable was a "luxury" in my circles. So yeah, that's where it went.

You mention the issue of Disney now being subscription based but that was part of the deal back then, too. Aside from free preview weekends you had to pay extra each month to subscribe on top of your regular cable subscription. It was somewhere around $7-10 per month even back then.

Thanks for the great video! Grew up on Kids Inc. and only recently started hunting up old footage of the episodes and songs. Also a HUGE Martika fan from back in the day. “Toy Soldiers” was one of my first single tapes back in the 80s when it came out. Not sure if you’ve seen it, but there’s an interview with Australian television from a few years ago when Martika went on tour there, and the hosts asked her about the children’s choir in “Toy Soldiers” and how JLH and Fergie sang in it. Martika talks a little about Kids Inc. in that interview. Quick, but interesting.

When a show uses copyrighted songs they typically license the songs for certain formats (TV first run, syndication, home video, etc.) for X number of years. Whatever licensing agreements were made for songs on Kids Inc. have undoubtably expired so Disney would have to license the music again to air the show in any way. Even for music Disney owns there are still songwriters who would have to be paid residuals, though that's not as big a hassle as having to license from other companies.

i would say this is the first american glee, the first glee period was Emu's world from 1982-89. It aired on CITV in the United Kingdom (specifically England) and the show would go through many names in its 7 year period. Emu's world, Emu's all live pink windmill show, Emus pink windmill show, Emus wide world, back to Emu's world, to its last name, EMU-TV. I also forgot to mention that Kids Incorporated allegedly planned on having Kelly Rossiter who was on Emus world from 1984-1989 on their show, but CITV declined.

I would guarantee its a licensing issue. Each song would have to be relicensed and every time the episode streams the artist would get paid for it. That is what keeps a lot of movies and tv shows from streaming like Pump up the volume starring Christian Slater.
