i agree that just chasing social media engagement is a recipe for disappointment and feeling like you're never enough, especially if you're feeling like you need to constantly be producing new finished objects so you have Content™. if your primary goal is always just making things you love, then any engagement is just like a cherry on top, in my experience! i also love wearing & rewearing all my knits, and i feel like more people could share how they style & care for their existing knits so it's not always just about the newest newness. i don't think knitting for specific occasions is really a problem though, as long as making it feels fulfilling for the person making the outfit- like in the grand scheme of sustainability, no hand-knit outfit is worth guilting yourself over compared to the scale of fast fashion, you know? fiber arts can also just be art, which imo doesn't always need to justify its existence in terms of sustainability, it can just be something you create because you wanted to express yourself or fulfill a creative urge you've had

okay YES i love this comment! i'm definitely always trying to knit things i love (for example, i was absolutely obsessed with the heartless top even before it did well online) - but i feel like i still (unfortunately) crave validation from social media haha. definitely something i need to work on in the long term! & generally agreed about making knits for special occasions/as art too, although for myself personally i do want to *mostly* knit pieces that i'll wear & rewear. thank you for the thoughts, i really enjoyed reading your input here 🥰

This is such a great video - I’ve spent the last few years *really* disinvesting from productivity culture and so it’s interesting to think about it in terms of knitting.

thank you so much, i appreciate that! & i've been going down the same path, i used to be *obsessed* with productivity back when i started college & my mindset on it has changed a lot. i think i'm in a healthier place now but always continuing to work on it 🥰

Also, it's kinda crazy that so many of us will compare ourselves and our productivity to fiber art influencers who literally knit, crochet, etc. for a living and don't have a "day job" outside of crafting and creating crafting content. Of course those creators are able to pump out more FOs that those who craft "part-time". Full-time crafting sounds fun in theory but the grass isn't always greener on the other side because those creators may not even enjoy the process anymore because their projects aren't always for fun and are instead intended to garner the most clicks and be made quickly for new content and their livelihoods depend on their hands and wrists staying healthy after straining them day in and day out. (Edit: I just want to say that there's no hate to full time crafters! I just wanted to point out that it's probably not as dreamy as it sounds so give yourself grace if you have a regular job and wish you could just knit all day

that's super true!! i always fantasize about what it would be like to knit for a living but i'm sure it's also pretty stressful in some ways too 😅
