Note that there are two types of “Netflix Original” content: 1. Productions that Netflix is involved with from the beginning which are expected to follow the guidelines laid out by Netflix. 2. Productions that Netflix gets an exclusive license for where the production isn’t expected to follow every guideline because it was acquired after production or after completion. I worked on a Netflix Original that was licensed after the project was completed. Most of the movie was filmed on Alexa cameras (a camera not on the list). You mentioned a few requirements of cameras on the list. Another thing they have in common is that they have a timecode connection on the camera (at least last time I checked). Thanks for sharing such great content on your channel!

Hey man, i'm currently working on a docu-series i'd like to sell to Netflix. I was thinking on producing the pilot myself (with my production company) then approach Netflix to sell it to them. Any advice would be great on how you suggest to process to maximise the potential to sell it ; i was thinking filming it all in small crew with a canon c70 (approved) and do the interviews the "Netflix way" (cam slightly below the interviewer). The idea would be to reach their production level in the pilot then have them produce the series. Thanks pal

We were just talking about how ridiculous it is the Alexa Mini not being approved is. It's not even just Netflix, ALL broadcasters have a min spec camera they'll accept as part of their original content. From behind the scenes when working in development to get a show sold to Netflix...(which is not easy by the way). Producers will shoot their development content on an approved Netflix camera simply to improve their chances. Most of this is because of how the service spits out the end video after compression etc and they want to make sure the "look" doesn't waver too much. Still not a lot of people who are streaming netflix in full 4k either. I just did some work on a development series being pitched to Netflix and they intentionally shot it on approved camera specs, even though nobody outside of the top brass at Netflix will see it. This is why camera rental houses exist ;)

Great video, people online tend to forget that most movies outside of Netflix aren't shot on 4k cameras at all (most of 'em being 2.5K) because outside of Netflix, the bigger and more diverse film industry around the world favors more the quality of the sensor rather than just the resolution itself.

So, what is important to look for in a video camera? - Usability / workflow - Ergonomics - Image quality - Color space, depending on your level of desire and skill for color grading - Sensor size / interchangeable lenses, depending on what you are shooting - Log profile (and not all of those are created equal) - Audio, including XLR inputs and preamp quality (sure, you can use an external recorder for that, but it adds time and complexity) - Neutral density filters (which goes back to usability) - Good autofocus is very handy, but most pro video is shot with manual focus, so it's not required - Viewfinder / screen quality - Assist tools for framing and exposure (peaking, punch in, zebras, waveforms, vectorscopes) - Enough money left over for good lenses and lighting 4K has become a near necessity today, but that doesn't mean just because the camera is only HD, it's bad. It's probably just older.

Hi Armando, I was wondering which RAW camera to get after seeing the Sigma fp, the new C500 Mark II, the Blackmagic 4K and 6K, etc. and how the RAW workflow works. I downloaded many raw footage from different brands and I cannot believe how difficult is to work with RAW video and the limitations it has. Maybe this is an issue I have with the marketing expectations vs. the reality of the product, you see, when I open any RAW image on Adobe Lightroom, I'm able to recover highlights, lift the shadows, choose a camera profile for the colors and apply any look or preset, but RAW in video is completely different. I was expecting to have the same amount of control as I have in Lightroom. Canon's Cinema RAW Light offer a single CRM file, but it is huge and slow to process in Premiere and Resolve, the provided Cinema Raw Development app is quite limited, the Sigma fp produces DNG sequences that only on Adobe After Effects can be fully tweaked using the full Adobe RAW dialog, but only on the first frame, a workaround is to open a specific frame in Photoshop and then save the settings to load them or use them on AfterFX, the playback and export is painfully slow. The Blackmagic BRAW files can be opened in Premiere by installing the "Blackmagic RAW" driver or plug-in, playback is smooth as butter, but again, the options for tweaking the video are quite limited, the only RAW video file that was somewhat "tweakable" was the RED RAW files, smooth playback, fast render, but as other RAW files, I had to do an extra grading using either Adobe Premiere or Resolve native controls. Many video enthusiast claim that LOG profiles are an intermediate between RAW and compressed video, so why is it that almost all RAW videos appear to be in some kind of LOG profile? Why I do have to apply some LUT over a RAW video that looks to be in LOG format? Considering that when I open a RAW image in any app like Lightroom, I have the full color range. Much appreciation if you could explain this and the complete workflow using RAW formats. BTW my workflow with the EOS R and the Atomos Ninja V from vlogging is the following: -Light setup. -Camera setup (24fps, 1/50, 4K/crop mode for native pixels, C-log 10bit) -Atomos Ninja with BT2020/C-log profile loading the BT2020_CanonLog-to-BT709_WideDR_65_FF_Ver.2.0.cube LUT -Grey card in the spot where I'll be. -Exposure by false color with the Atomos Ninja and grey card. -Color balance with the Atomos Ninja using the RGB parade. -Record in the Atomos Ninja. -Editing in Adobe Premiere from the SATA SSD where the Atomos Ninja recorded. -Export to DNX/.mxf. -Encoding to HEVC/H.265 using FFmpeg from terminal. -Publishing on KZbin/FB. I have a Mac Pro (Late 2013) 3GHz 8-Core Xeon E5 with 32GB Ram, 2 AMD FirePro D700 6 GB and 1TB SSD.

A camera's proprietary log gamut is effectively a "baked-in profile". Unlike RAW capture, it is not independent of color temperature, and is highly sensitive to the camera's white balance. When you use a correction LUT to convert log footage to a particular working color space, you are converting from its original log gamut into the target color space. Log profiles are very low in contrast, excellent for capturing subtle gradations in low-saturation footage, less so for high-contrast subjects. I wouldn't use log to shoot film noir, for example.
