Found this on the challenger forum replied by an SRT Engineer. A decent explanation. I've had this once or twice on my 2016 Scat 392 not a daily driver. I've done 3 cold starts a month apart since I stored it for the winter with no issues. Here it is: New engines take some time for the piston rings (sometimes seals as well) to break in. As ring tensions have reduced and bore finishes have improved (read smoother) the rings will take longer to seal to the mating surface. In some rare cases, if an engine is run very hard right out of the chute you will get some glazing between the bores and rings which will cause an even longer (or potentially never) break in period. Normal conditions will break in and seal up well within several thousand miles. Make a few hard runs with the car after break in will ususally accelerate the sealing. Some light smoke from the exhaust on start ups (usually cold or warm after sitting for a time) is not an issue. If the smoke is heavy or continuous during driving there may be a mechanical problem, take into the dealer.

Listen a 392 scat pack is not direct injection. It is port injected so a catch can will do nothing. It will actually hurt the engine now if you have a turbo or a supercharger, you should get a catch can for being said that this is port injected and not direct injection. A scat pack should not have one

The oil smoke comes from built up oil in the head. I used to own a brand new 2014 Challenger SRT8 6 sp. manual. I'm very keen on how the engine runs. At first my car was running hot, sluggish, and sucked gas until I got on the highway. So, I found out about the "Oil Catch Can" that's made for Mopars to "catch" the extra oil before it ends up in the head. It costs $66 and is very easy to install by hand. I had to dump it about every 5,000 miles or every oil change. I also installed a K&N cold air intake at the same time. Man, it made the biggest difference!! The engine ran sharp, cool, and clean after that, no matter how little I drove it. And no more oil smoke! 👍

The smoke generated at startup was more than likely caused by you racing the engine at shut down. The oil pressure pushes the oil up into the heads and drains down onto the cylinders. When you turned it off, this leaves the valves open for oil to drain down onto the cylinders. Hope this explains your scare.
@moparsrt1905 Жыл бұрын
That makes no sense. The only way for the oil to drain through the valves into the cylinder is through bad valve seals or through the intake manifold. The heads drain oil back into the block.

That smoke at startup was just a little 'oil blowby' and is normal with large block hemis. The best cure is to get an oil catch can so instead of the oil going back through the intake via the breather, the catch can puts the oil back into the engine rather than the intake. You will notice that without a catch can you will loose a few 10's of a quart over time because it gets burned off through ignition. Just make sure to top her off every six months or so...

“I think, I feel, but have no specific reasons as to why not to buy a SCAT pack?” Huh, I am a SCAT pack owner and knew nothing prior, but this is it in a nutshell. You can add a ton more power. The factory 392CID is a bored and stroked 5.7 block. You are correct there is a lot you can’t do but only because it’s already got high flo heads, shorty headers, and cylinder capacity increased with shorter stroke piston rods and lower profile pistons. If you buy the stage 3 kit for the 5.7L you will get the top end of a 6.4L 392. That block can be bored additionally safely, long tube headers added, cold air intake, PCM swap, exhaust diameter increased, and boost. Right off the rip if you spend $250 for Z Automotive’s Fazer you will get additional drive modes including “Track Mode” which instantly changes the shift points and timing for better performance. He’ll just throwing away your Hockey pucks and putting some real racing rubber on it a little wider than stock would make a huge difference. What I can’t understand is why you are dumping 91 octane gas into a stock SCAT Pack. Higher octane fuel is used to prevent detonation at the advanced timing settings required for running a radical camshaft. A stock SCAT doesn’t even benefit from high octane fuel. You could pump jet fuel into your tank in that car and it won’t make it faster. If you want can swap that entire engine with a Arrington Motosport’s 410CID longblock or complete engine.

About the smoke coming out of your exhaust. I had a similar issue with my Challenger RT. Turns out the valve seals were installed incorrectly at the factory in 2 of the cylinders. It took me taking it to the dealer several times for them to figure that out. Hope this helps you out dude.

New 392s including the RAM pickups also do that on cold start up. It is coming from the valve stem seals, it is normal.

This IS NOT normal. You should not be burning oil on startup
@durstroyer3924 Жыл бұрын
Its not really that the pistons are weak, they aren't. The problem with throwing boost at the 392 is that the upper ringlands are high up on the pistons and the rings are gapped tight, its by design for efficiency and emissions. So when you throw to much boost at it the excess heat generated causes the rings to expand more then the specs allow, they bind up building pressure in the ring eventually cracking or popping a piece of the top of the piston. This issue is resolved on the stock pistons if you open up the gap on the rings, however. If your tore down to the point of regapping rings you may as well put in the drop in mmx rod and piston combo.

@ianbrown94476 жыл бұрын
Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but did you conduct the break in process as directed by the manufacturer? If not then the proper seating of the rings might be the cause of the blow by. Not a mechanic, just saw a few videos about the breaking in of a new dodge challenger. Nice ride and hope you enjoy it for many years to come brother.

After a car has sat over night and has some bad valve guides oil can slip by the worn valve guide and end up in the cylinder. When you make that first morning start up if you have some bad valve guides the tailpipes will smoke. I noticed it was your left bank that smoked. I wouldn't worry about it unless it remains.
@inboundlight77326 жыл бұрын
Yep, it happens to my T/A sometimes too, and it happened to my SRT8 Challenger. Tends to happen more if I park the car on an incline. Most notably it can mean the oil is slightly overfilled and the previous engine run time was very short. It is just blow by getting cleaned out of the intake

You can't check the oil with the engine running and by tapping on the dip stick. If you have any concerns, always check it manually.

I’m a huge fan of keeping cars stock. I’m also a guy who keeps cars for long timespans and wants reliability. Companies invest millions and millions of dollars making performance cars that will be fast and reliable/durable. I’m not messing with it and you won’t be able to use much more than 485 in the street anyways.

The 392 has plenty of usable power. My daily driver is a 2017 SRT Challenger; just good all around fun. Yes, I wish it was like to old days of just adding parts and turning...well it is, but this is way more complicated. I might just do it anyway, but like you say for an additional $20k, I could have got a Helllcat. The truth is, I can't get the power to the ground now. It sounds great just stock. If anything, I would look at something to make it launch better. I could go with drag tires, but that takes away from the daily driver. It is a pretty good all-rounder, and that's why I got it in the first place. Sure, you could spend money invest in an upgrade, but you addressed the more basic question of should you. Making an assessment first is smart.

supercharging not a good idea with the 6.4 because of aluminum. ECU is a non issue because you can get a tuned ECU. You can get some decent HP gains by changing the cam, redoing the exhaust from long tube headers to high flow cats and mid muffler delete. Can even change your injectors and throttle body swap and CAI and change your left headlight to a hellcat hollowed out headlight and make sure your hood scoop is functional. You may have to cut some of the hood liner but that's no biggy. Then get her retuned. You can probably increase WHP to around 430-440 which is a hell of a lot more than stock...

Spark plugs had no gap whatsoever when I pulled the coil packs to check them. Car needs rockers, and a new camshaft as well. 16k miles A8 trans. Mine would also smoke only on cold starts SOMETIMES. It’s weird. Having them check my valve seals as well... & YES I do have a CATCH CAN since around 800 miles on the odometer... & I’m a very spirited driver when I do take my 392 out. Catch can bro, that's the key. True CAI, headers, high flow cats, and a tune will do a lot to wake up that 392 even more, it's all bolt on but you'll void your warranty because it requires an unlocked PCM. If you really want to spend some money, a new cam and ported heads are the next step. No need for a supercharger when you can easily make 600 at the crank with bolt ons, a cam, and heads

What Mr. Matthew Harper said, Oil Catch Can. Look it up. Especially, with adding a supercharger. My two cents, buy a Whipple or a VMP, etc.? Roots supercharger not centrifugal. Roots can be used through the rpm range, centrifugal is used for higher/peak rpms.
