The truth about owning a 392 engine I wish I knew.
The 392 is a great engine producing 485hp / 475 tq, unfortunately due to the weak pistons in it building it up can often be seen as not worth the investment since Hellcat prices have dropped. In this video I explain my perspective on why its smarter to avoid modding the 392 and voiding warranty and instead upgrading to the hellcat which has the better drivetrain components to handle the additional power.

You pull the oil release bolt out of the bottom of the oil pan when it is running. The running engine will hold the oil inside and you just shine a flashlight inside to check it. Simple. 😉😂

Most Challenger owners also own a Prius. I used to clown the Prius, until I saw that $20 of gas gets 300+ miles easy. Ordinary cars beg for 100 miles on $20 of gas. There are at least 5 Priuses on my street alone. Several more on the next block. Not sure why all this hate towards it still exists.

Found this on the challenger forum replied by an SRT Engineer. A decent explanation. I've had this once or twice on my 2016 Scat 392 not a daily driver. I've done 3 cold starts a month apart since I stored it for the winter with no issues. Here it is: New engines take some time for the piston rings (sometimes seals as well) to break in. As ring tensions have reduced and bore finishes have improved (read smoother) the rings will take longer to seal to the mating surface. In some rare cases, if an engine is run very hard right out of the chute you will get some glazing between the bores and rings which will cause an even longer (or potentially never) break in period. Normal conditions will break in and seal up well within several thousand miles. Make a few hard runs with the car after break in will ususally accelerate the sealing. Some light smoke from the exhaust on start ups (usually cold or warm after sitting for a time) is not an issue. If the smoke is heavy or continuous during driving there may be a mechanical problem, take into the dealer.

Very good critique, an oil catch can helps with these
@charlesc7723
@charlesc7723 5 жыл бұрын
The smoke generated at startup was more than likely caused by you racing the engine at shut down. The oil pressure pushes the oil up into the heads and drains down onto the cylinders. When you turned it off, this leaves the valves open for oil to drain down onto the cylinders. Hope this explains your scare.
@moparsrt1905
@moparsrt1905 8 ай бұрын
That makes no sense. The only way for the oil to drain through the valves into the cylinder is through bad valve seals or through the intake manifold. The heads drain oil back into the block.

@vegaswould
@vegaswould 5 жыл бұрын
Most likely from not having an oil catch can. The oil build up in the intake manifold can do that. If you get an oil catch can and the problem still persists after a month or so, then you have a bigger problem. Bad valve guides/seals.

The oil smoke comes from built up oil in the head. I used to own a brand new 2014 Challenger SRT8 6 sp. manual. I'm very keen on how the engine runs. At first my car was running hot, sluggish, and sucked gas until I got on the highway. So, I found out about the "Oil Catch Can" that's made for Mopars to "catch" the extra oil before it ends up in the head. It costs $66 and is very easy to install by hand. I had to dump it about every 5,000 miles or every oil change. I also installed a K&N cold air intake at the same time. Man, it made the biggest difference!! The engine ran sharp, cool, and clean after that, no matter how little I drove it. And no more oil smoke! 👍

I currently own a 14 charger 392. And honestly i bought it bc its a family/muscle car. Yes i knew it'll never be as fast as most pound for pound bc of the weight and its inability to be boosted safely (not saying it can't be, just 6.4 arent as good as the 6.2 boosted). Anyways i put down 498hp and 471tq to the wheels with minor bolt ons and cam upgrade. Its being built now with forged internals and E85 then 175 shot spray. The amount of money i spent i could have had a LS swapped 900hp plus car, but i love my car and im comited now in it. Bottom line, it all depends on your preferences and budget. My car puts down now 543hp 497tq NA with E85 and 683/671 on 175 shot. Mods are: Oil catch can JBA LT w/cat delete JLT CAI Apache max cam (No2 grind) Red eye lifters Demon injectors Forged pushrods Mahle pistons and rods ARP rod bolts/head studs 465 warblo fuel pump Ported TB & Intake manifold Nitrious outlet 175 wet ket Paramount 3200 stall Custom Hp dyno tune BC coilovers Do i regret the amount of money i spent on it knowing i could have something faster or better? The 392 has plenty of usable power. My daily driver is a 2017 SRT Challenger; just good all around fun. Yes, I wish it was like to old days of just adding parts and turning...well it is, but this is way more complicated. I might just do it anyway, but like you say for an additional $20k, I could have got a Helllcat. The truth is, I can't get the power to the ground now. It sounds great just stock. If anything, I would look at something to make it launch better. I could go with drag tires, but that takes away from the daily driver. It is a pretty good all-rounder, and that's why I got it in the first place. Sure, you could spend money invest in an upgrade, but you addressed the more basic question of should you. Making an assessment first is smart.

That smoke at startup was just a little 'oil blowby' and is normal with large block hemis. The best cure is to get an oil catch can so instead of the oil going back through the intake via the breather, the catch can puts the oil back into the engine rather than the intake. You will notice that without a catch can you will loose a few 10's of a quart over time because it gets burned off through ignition. Just make sure to top her off every six months or so...

Last time I had smoke like that coming from the exhaust it was a leak in the head gaskets. Check the seals and see if they just need replaced by chance. Also yours could be a slow leak which is why you didn’t see it in the fuel station. Possibly just leave the car sitting for an hour or so and just check how long it takes for the smoke to reappear on start up and see if the amount increases overtime. From the looks it’s probably just a small leak that built up over night.

Performance, start with exhaust and intake (all the way to the plenum). After that, electronic water pump and air compressor. You can look at hellcat plenum’s, but I’m not sure they match up. Then tune it, either with mopar or at a credible tuner who will guarantee their work. As far as you burning oil, get it looked at by the dealership IMMEDIATELY. I had a marauder that did that and when I took it in a year later, it said I had a misfire that was so bad it was beating my transmission to death. And surprisingly it wasn’t that noticeable.

I would have to agree. The original machine had a base plate of prefabulated amulite, surmounted by a malleable logarithmic casing in such a way that the two main spurving bearings were in a direct line with the panametric fan. The latter consisted simply of six hydrocoptic marzlevanes, so fitted to the ambifacient lunar waneshaft that side fumbling was effectively prevented. The main winding was of the normal lotus-o-deltoid type placed in panendermic semi-boloid slots in the stator, every seventh conductor being connected by a nonreversible tremmie pipe to the differential girdlespring on the "up" end of the grammeters.

I'd say with my short experience if you want to just have a fun daily or street car and no need to mod the 392 is the way to go hands down I think. If I wanted to really have some fun with not modding I'd go with the scat pack challenger with a 6 speed. But I'd honestly end up going with a coyote and modding the piss out of it but no boost anyways. Just too much power for the street even on low boost. Just got my wife the 2019 charger scat pack. I still drive my 2006 mustang gt. Only makes 360rwhp/340rwtq. Cammed and full bolt on. Fun street car. Makes enough power. Definitely enough to get me in way too much trouble. Now this car I'd boost and only do like 500rwhp max. Dont need more than that for a daily. I already drive it into the 12's N/A. I do love my wifes SCAT though. It is sweet!

I own an '18 Charger R/T that I picked up from the dealer literally a year ago yesterday after ordering it from the factory. I haven't touched anything and really don't plan on it anytime soon. For the average person, 370 hp is more than enough cruising the highways and backroads and occasionally putting it to the floor whether it's straight or curved. Honestly, what I really want to do is replace my performance suspension from the Super Track Pak (Which is the only reason I got the option along with slightly better brakes) with the 3 mode suspension from the Hellcat. I have no desire to step up to the 6.4 or the Hellcat, due to rising fuel costs, insurance rates, and maintenance costs. I feed my car what is recommends which is 89 octane right from the start and insurance wise literally went up like $12 from my Charger V6. And the 5.7 is pretty good on gas. I love the ideas of the Hellcat and Scat Pack, they're just not for me with everyday driving.

What type oil are you using? Also replace one quart for Lucas hi performance synthetic oil stabilizer. Cold start smoking blue, definitely preworn piston oil rings, preworn valve seals would smoke blue(burned oil) like most of the time. Not even catch cans can catch that. All they do is keep Intake manifold ports clean, sensors and accurate fuel ratio. Even polluted oil can trick the engine computer and trigger a check engine light.
