It is sad to know that the engineer who created the F40 is almost unknown. His name is Nicola Materazzi, he is the person behind 288 GTO, F40, Testarossa (1984), Lancia Stratos, he also worked at Bugatti EB110 and the B Engineering Edonis. For F40 he took care of everything, not only the engine. Around the web can find his interviews, a great engineer and a humble person.

A note about the crazy air intakes. Each one of them serves a purpose, unlike a lot of cars made by Toyota today. On the side, the lower NACA duct forward of the rear wheel is the rear brake cooler, the one above that gets vented to the intercooler on that side. The intake behind the rear-side window, (the one Doug did not know existed) is the combustion air supply for the engine intake into the filter box on that side of the engine. The NACA ducts on the top, just under the wing, are for the oil and transmission oil coolers. Those vents through the lexan rear-window are actually really necessary to allow, not only engine heat out, but even more so for the heat rejected from the two intercoolers right bellow that window. I think the two little NACA ducts on the hood converge into one intake and allow air into the cabin, though I am not entirely sure about that.

Doug doesn't get the basic thrust of the F40. It's a race inspired and executed Ferrari, no holds barred. There are NO styling cues, it's designed for a purpose, as a street race car. This is a real as it gets. From the original release date until today this has always been my favorite modern Ferrari. Enzo approved this.

I've heard several people say it's ugly which I'll never understand yet they praise the Enzo and being beautiful. In the eye of the beholder I suppose, I personally think the f40 has amazing styling and think the Enzo is ugly. The Enzo is a hell of a car as well though I just don't think it's a good looking car myself. Maybe being a 80's kid gives me some bias? Or the fact my first super car I ever got to sit in was an f40. Kinda why I still love the 360, first Ferrari I ever got to go for a ride in and not just sit in it.

This is by far the coolest car Ferrari has ever made, I saw one at a classic car show many years ago and talked for a long time with the owner. He was a 67 year old man who bought the car brand new in 1991 as a gift to himself after selling a company he started in the 80's, a truly great guy, he even let me sit in it! I was so humbled just standing near it, I will never forget that day

I daly drove an F40 in the '90s. It remains the only car I ever regret selling. Not because it has quadrupled in value. It was an incredible driving experience.

Fun fact, the F40 is based on the 288 GTO Evoluzione; which was meant to be raced in the group B category, but eventually got canceled. The 288 GTO Evoluzione is basically a rawer version of the F40 (even the F40 LM) thus outperforms it all the way. Sadly, only six units ever made.
