I was prescribed ozempic for weight loss as I had gained huge amounts of weight as a side effect of psychiatric medications. I endured terrible nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea with ozempic and I came to the conclusion that it wasn’t for me so I stopped using it. What helped me with that decision is the fact that the weight would come back as soon as I stopped the treatment. Nobody is talking about high possibility of the weight coming back after the cessation of Ozempic. It’s just not sustainable. I started doing intermittent fasting instead and have lost 10lbs so far, it’s taking longer for sure but this can be my new lifestyle.. it’s easy, doesn’t cost anything and it’s sustainable.

There's definitely moral failing, but not from people who have a diagnosis of being overweight or obese, insulin resistant or diabetic. It's on part of the people who are taking those meds to satisfy their vanity and indulgence, while depriving the people who need it, WHO ACTUALLY NEED IT, from getting it. There's a problem with self-control too, but again, it's the people who have no problem leveraging their financial power to do anything regardless of how immoral it is of a thing to do. I swear this makes me nauseous and on the verge of crying.

Thank you for talking about this! As someone who has been prescribed ozempic for obesity it makes me feel so bad when I see all of this misinfo going around lately. The majority of people seem to think that being overweight or obese is indeed a moral failure and by taking a medication like this someone like me is taking away something from diabetic people. But I will become diabetic if I don't lose weight! Obesity is chronic and I will be struggling against this for the rest of my life. I just want to be able to live healthy life without developing even worse conditions.

Thank you for pointing out weight issues aren't always about a lack of self control. As a Type 1 Diabetic that also has Rheumatoid Arthritis, my weight has been very difficult to manage for several years now, even under the regular care of doctors and on a 1200 calorie a day diet. It's incredibly discouraging when doctors, people who should know better, that are new in my circle of physicians I have to visit simplistically say, "Lose weight," before they even look at my records and notes from previous doctors on what we've tried already to make that happen. It's even worse to hear members of society at large (especially people in the church) share their thoughts. Keep up the great work and thank you for all you do to inform people through your videos. ❤️

30 lbs isn't going to do it unless you have really inelastic or dry skin. I didn't get the "loose face" until I had gotten to the 95lb mark. After 100lbs I started noticing quite a bit of changes. (In my body I started to have the skin infections in the loose skin after about 60 lbs) Now, at 140lbs lost I have found that serious moisturizers and "compression garments" are helping my tummy and jawline to re-firm somewhat. It is all about helping the elasticity of the skin and fighting gravity when possible.

I have operated on patients after gastric bypass surgery and ozempic who have such malabsorption of nutrients that their tissue quality is affected and is very poor. Thank you for making this video from a nurse. There is a shortage of the drugs you mentioned as well as others like Mounjaro. They are really helping people who NEED them. My hope is that more insurance companies will cover these drugs for obesity alone (before developing other related medical conditions) because many cannot afford them without that. It is unfortunate that those who can easily afford to pay those exorbitant prices out of pocket are abusing them for vanity purposes.

Amen! I guess those that have the money to pay out of pocket don’t think of those who actually have medical conditions that need it. Something really needs to be done about that! They can get their prescriptions online with an online doctor who is just there to make money. Seems like medical malpractice for prescriptions to be written for those who are at a normal weight and BMI just so they can get in that “dress” or thinner summer body. How would they even know that they’re prescribing it for someone who is already Anorexic or has Bulimia. Thank you Hollywood for reinforcing the unrealistic body image to those don’t need it or have an issue.

Fatphobia is such a woke sounding word. A phobia is a irrational fear. Obesiry should never be normalised or as seen as beautyful. Diabetes is not sexy, kidney feature and impaired eyesight is not fatphobic, shortness or breath or affected joints is not cool. Most cases of obesity is not related to bad genes, diseases or medications but actual life style choices. Medications have side effects. But people are to lazy to address the root cause and prefer an easy fix.

This is great!! I am post menopause and was gaining weight like crazy and my face was breaking out badly. I was working out and not eating badly (not perfect). I was healthy but hormonally a mess. My doctor referred me to the weight management program - we talked over many options. We settled on Wegovy, but it wasn't available so I started on Ozempic. I am 10 months in and have just lost 50 pounds. I lost 15 quickly but stalled. I decided to join ww - started following the diabetic ww plan. I have been on 3 trips, holidays, etc. It is NOT an easy drug to take - took 4 months for my body to get somewhat used to it. I still have a bad day after the injection. I also have alot of GI issues if I eat poorly. I do not dare drink alcohol. I have had a weight issue my whole life . . . I am hoping that I am making the changes with ww to help with the future. The drug does start to wear off about 5 days in and the appetite does come back and that is when I just follow program and/or decide to splurge a little (hamburger and fries at Hardees). It is a commitment that alot of people won't make. I sometimes miss my old eating self. I meal prep, etc. What I do like about the meds is it doesn't make you hyper and that feeling on speed like other weight loss pills. If anything it makes you fatigued. It is NOT a quick fix and it doesn't work for everyone.

Thanks, Dr. Dray. My daughter's mother-in-law has been on Ozempic for several months; nearly a year. She is one who is taking it appropriately and with appropriate care and oversight, and after many years of her insulin resistance being ignored by her prior doctor. Her blood sugar tests apparently didn't show the insulin resistance, but when the new doc tested her actual insulin, she found her to be a candidate for Ozempic. She's lost 65 pounds; it has been slow. She now can sleep at night (because of her insulin being balanced), which I have some trouble with. So I was looking into it and saw the headlines about the face and wondered about that. I appreciate your videos and so I listened to this one. Yes, that makes total sense about how losing a lot of weight would affect your face. I've seen that in people who have bariatric surgery. Thank you for clarifying. FWIW, my daughter's MIL also takes metformin and has made the changes to her diet and she exercises. (Though she did try diet and exercise before and it was the Ozempic that made the final difference for her.) So your point about it not being just a "drop weight drug" is appreciated. I'm bummed that people are just using it for completely aesthetic reasons. There are those out there who have struggled for years and who need the drug, and now there is a shortage because it's been snapped up by those with the money to pay cash and who are just using it as you say, "to get that summer-ready body."

I agree. I believe often times people don't realize that while losing weight can be a quick fix via surgery and/or medications, keeping the weight off NEVER IS. The only way to maintain the weight loss is through permanent lifestyle changes and that is extremely hard to do. Unless the person is extremely disciplined and able to control their impulses and themselves, the weight that was lost will come back. Unfortunately in this society, not many people are willing to put in the hard work that is required and will blame their failures on a myriad of factors other than themselves and their lack of willpower to put in the work that's necessary.

Hi Dr. Dray! Thank you so much for addressing this medication and mostly, addressing obesity in a respectful and educated way. Besides much of society, I’ve had medical professionals/MD’s who judge and don’t get it. Many of us who have obesity don’t chose to be this way. I probably know more about nutrition than many nutritionists! The verbiage that some professionals use makes an already humiliated person more humiliated. Humiliating someone won’t make them lose weight. I have PSOC and all the “wonderful” things that go along with it. I always told my doctors I don’t want to be the bearded fat lady at the sideshow! After my third child, I just couldn’t keep the weight in control. I went on the low fat craze way back and gained weight. Too many carbs in those to make the products remotely tasty. You name it, I’ve been on it. I am insulin resistant and just at the border of pre diabetes. A1C of 5.7. I work at it though, along with Metformin. I’ve contemplated gastric sleeve surgery as a tool. I’d rather take a medication though. I have autoimmune conditions. Psoriatic Arthritis, Osteoarthritis, Sjogrens, Raynauds and have extensive back, neck and knee problems and of course it affects my hands as it does my back. Some of the more rude professionals as well as others say “Just exercise”, “go walk at least”. If I could I would. I had to have a ramp built because I could no longer go up and down my steps and falls were getting more serious. Even with pain meds , it only makes the pain bearable. I’m starving myself to get my weight down so I can start in my total knee replacements. Thanks to long COVID affecting my GI tract, I went through a month of vomiting and couldn’t eat. The only good thing about it was that I lost weight. I had lost only 6lbs before that. I’m limited to what I can eat now, but I choose to keep my carb count down as that’s the only way I’ve lost weight in the past. Basically, I’m eating the amounts I would as if I’ve had Gastric Sleeve. Yes, I’m hungry and yes the hunger hurts and sometimes makes me vomit. I’m desperate to get new knees. I’m seeing a doctor next week about one of the medications discussed, but even if my insurance approved it, it probably won’t be available. There are a couple stomach meds I’m supposed to be taking since COVID wrecked my stomach but they’re not available anymore either, but not because people taking them who don’t need them! I’m already on Humira and Injections of Methotrexate, so one more little shot wouldn’t bother me. Lol I just wish more medical personnel were as knowledgeable as you are and it’s not even your specialty! I can’t imagine you telling anyone ….”well it’s because you’re fat”! Or “if you weren’t so fat…..”, to a nerve conduction study pushing the electrodes so deep and turn it up so high, that I bruise and about can’t take the pain. The tech doing it said “I have to do it like that because your arms are so fat”! Some were never taught to be tactful and about bedside manor. It’s like they’re trying to tell you something you don’t already know about yourself! I worked in the ED and Birthing Center for 25 years and never would have said some of the things I’ve been told. I also felt I had to work harder and be better than others just to prove I could do the job and I was just as smart as the thin workers. All my jobs I’ve felt like I had to do that with any job I’ve had. I didn’t want to be stereotyped. I work 12 hr night shifts all those years and I continued to work till I couldn’t physically anymore. When it takes 30 min just to get out of the car and up steps into the house, while crying with each step being worse that the one before. That was to also prove my worth. Now I know my worth isn’t in what size I am or how good I was at whatever I was doing. It’s taken a lot of years for society and medical professionals to see a little different and not just lump all us “fatties” into the same pot.

Thank you so much for this. I have had weight loss surgery and I’m glad I did, but I’m sad that I waited for so long because lots of ppl kept trying to talk me out of it, because of the risks. They never talked about the risks of me being 150 lbs overweight. I was very scared of the surgery, so au was easily influenced by their reactions. It seemed so simple in their minds for me to loose weight, because they never had weight issues. This weekend, at a family dinner, we talked about Ozempic and my mother said that if that drug was available then, prior to surgery, she would have totally been supportive of me taking it. My sister was a little baffled, saying that there are side effects, bla bla, that ppl shouldn’t be taking it. I had the same answer, what do you think the risks of being overweight is? What are the other options? Surgeries? What’s more risky? Studies have shown that only 5% those with big amounts of weight to lose, who lose it manage to keep it off. I know lots of ppl who have had surgeries who barely lost anything or gained a lot back. It’s the same with Ozempic. Time will tell but I would have rather have had the option of taking Ozempic, I find it less drastic and risky than surgery.

Weight loss over age 30 will definitely cause people to look significantly older. I dropped a couple of clothing sizes to down a size 2 when I was 32 and my mother BEGGED me to gain 5 pounds because she said I looked 42 instead of 32. She was trying to find me in the aisle of Home Depot one day, and didn't recognize me because she said I looked so old. lol (she's a narcissist, so no surprise). @lw9515 The infantilization of women has been a problem for centuries now, long before the founding of the US. Remember in the US, males who were former slaves with ZERO RIGHTS were given the right to vote decades before females could vote. The US has long been a patriarchal society, as has the entire world. You will find matrilineage, but not matriarchial societies (that we know of). This is just how it has been, sadly (for all of us). If you are a petite female, 5'4" or under, you will experience this infantilization even more so, unless you have very masculine energy. It's unfair, but it's also a fact. I think it's important to NOT react to that, stereotyping and instead just show overt emotional maturity, and professionalism, and be as assertive and confident as your natural personality allows (i.e. be who YOU are), and SHOW THEM who you are. I understand this gets frustrating. The truth is, until someone is 40ish, people aren't going to truly take you seriously period, especially people older than 40 because they've already been there, and most (not all) of them are KEENLY aware of what younger people don't yet know what they don't know. That's true if you're a 6'5" professional male or a 5'2" professional female. YEARS OF EXPERIENCE matters, and the older you get, the more you realize how very true that is, and...my god...that is *especially* true in medicine. In medicine, you *finally* acquire the depth and breadth of knowledge *plus* the critical years of experience you really need around the age of 50-55-60 years old.

I have been on Ozempic for three months. In post-menopause stage of my life, the weight loss and weight maintenance strategies that worked for decades don't cut it anymore. Weight creeped up and A1C levels followed. I gave a solid effort to bring down both, committed and followed through to change how I eat. I knew how to drop pounds before, but I had to learn a low glycemic way to eat. Consulted with a nutritionist. It worked for a couple years but eventually it didn't anymore. I had a really bad reaction to the first-line meds to control A1C. My doc turned to Ozempic for me, which takes special authorization and backup data and begging, it would seem, to get insurance to cover it. Three months on it, and my A1C is just under the danger zone for diabetes. Yay for that. My doc kept me on the lowest dose for an extra month, so I don't lose weight too fast. I'm not mad at that. I've lost 20 pounds. To now, averaging 1.5 pounds per week. That's reasonable. It absolutely kills the appetite. I track what I eat still...to make sure I'm eating enough. I've had no GI issues, but my blood pressure is low for the first time ever. I've had dizzy spells. For that, my dose was decreased. I feel better. I'm still losing weight. I am good with that.

I had been taking ozempic for about 8 months last year. I had been pre-diabetic for a while at this point and ozempic was recommended by an endocrinologist. Several months into taking ozempic I started doing different kinds of treatments on my face and body to treat loose skin. I had laser treatments for my face and SMAS lifting for body (upper arms, back and belly), VelaShape for legs. I lost 68 lbs going down from around 200 lbs to 132 lbs. My body and face look good. No sagging or droopiness. The only major side effect for me is that my breasts lost their volume a lot. It doesn’t bother me to the point of making me unhappy with my body. But I do consider breast augmentation later in life. So the point is that a substantial weight los is a lot of work and a big investment. Something you need to do only under doctor’s supervision. And it’s not only the drug, it’s a complete lifestyle change. And you need to treat side effects of weight los in the presses too. Only it’s way you can gain real results.

My issue is that, unless the manufacturer has substantially increased production of this product, those with type 2 diabetics have not been able to get it. I've been on Ozempic since 2018 for diabetes. While I have lost a good bit of weight, it is more about the good blood sugar control for me. However, with everyone jumping on the weight loss wagon, Ozempic is now in short supply. Reminds me of the HCG craze. I had a friend who spent thousands of dollars on shots and yes she absolutely dropped the weight. The only problem was that when she got tired of shelling out for the shots every bit and more of the weight returned. Under normal circumstance the un-enhanced body can only shed 1 pound of fat (3600 calories of stored energy) at a release rate of 30 calories per day maximum. So you need 120 days to get rid of one pound of fat. You need a caloric deficit created by proper diet and exercise to get there. You don’t want to exceed the maximum rate fat cellular metabolism supports or you will be losing valuable, metabolically active muscle. So all-in-all it takes time and sound nutrition to sustain real fat loss. Sure, get your thyroid and hormones looked at and correct where necessary. Beyond that weigh and track your food. Most people are really not good at portion control nor recognizing hidden calories.

@@rosieposie9564 , you would be surprised how many people will take it just for a 15-20lb weight loss. Think Hollywood or peoples so preoccupied by a few pounds. They are most of the reason that it’s become scarce for people who truly need it. Talking with my pharmacist about this and she says more people who are thinner buy more than those needing it. They may be the only ones who can afford it out of pocket. Thank you for explaining “Ozempic Face”. My doctor prescribed Wegovy for me almost two years ago. Wegovy is the same drug as Ozempic. The difference is the dosage these drugs come in. Wegovy has been a miracle for me. For the first time I have “normal” responses to food and have lost 65 lbs so far. I have 65 more lbs to go to get to a healthy weight. I really don’t care if I develop “Ozempic/Wegovy face! I’m ready to trade my fat for a face full of wrinkles! I love having more energy and less attachment to food! There are people out there that enjoy insulting and bullying others. They want to assume that obese people are moral weaklings. The idea that obesity can be a metabolic problem that can be fixed with a drug, changes that idea from a gluttony problem to a chronic disease problem. So, it takes away their “fun” bullying activities in the case of fat people. 🙄smh. Just like a diabetic, those of us that are severely obese will need to stay on Wegovy for life. It’s not a short term drug. If you stop taking the drug, the weight will come back. It is definitely an interesting time in human history. We are beginning to understand so many chronic ailments, and scientists are finding solutions! I can’t wait to see what problems they solve next!

You’re absolutely correct, obesity isn’t a moral failing. Most of us haven’t been taught to eat the proper human diet. I’ve gone carnivore & lost a lot of weight & still slimming down. My butt, hips & thighs are stubborn & my boobs look like medium deflated balloons. The right bra lifts them back to place & gives me the Serena Williams profile. If I can come down another 30-50lb I’d be so satisfied. Come down through eating right.

Sadly many women in PCOS fb groups are telling others that ozempic will cause them to lose weight even if they don't eat healthy or exercise. One even boasted that she ate pizza every day and did less than 4000 steps :( And during the ozempic shortage thanks to all the overweight people wanting this 'magic weight loss drug') the drug was restricted to diabetics only, and the PCOS women were unbelievably outraged about that. Many cried that they were already gaining most of the lost weight back within a month. A few said that diabetics should 'get their own medication' as ozempic was the only weight loss drug available and the overweight deserved it more. Their behaviour made me feel ashamed to be in those groups.

Every conversation about obesity in 2023 MUST focus on the ingredients in the food we eat. These ingredients set people up for obesity and diabetes (and then, no surprise, pharmaceuticals make money on the effects of that). My wish is that every person become educated about what is really in the food they eat and how it is hijacking their biochemistry. Start by watching the movie "Fed Up." It gives alot of valuable info in an easy-to-understand format. Take back your body! 💗

You are SO right! I have been telling people this very thing for nearly 40 years! Unfortunately, many people become “possessive” about their food choices and make excuses (“It’s my only vice”, “It’s my only pleasure in life”, etc…). Problem is, in the end, they are making wheat will eventually become fatal decisions😢

Ok. A year ago January of 2022 I started Ozempic. I was 230 pounds and an A1C of 11.5. That’s very bad. Now this year January 2023 I’m 166 pounds. I’m no longer diabetic!!! I was for 21 years. It’s a horrible disease!!! It changed my life for the worst. I’m at the maximum dose. It took a year to get to the maximum dose. I have a very sensitive stomach and the worst side effect I have is nausea. It’s brutal. According to my height at 5’8” I’m still overweight. I should be 122 to 150 pounds. 😳. My sister has mentioned that I look sickly and should stop losing. I don’t want to. I’m desperate for diabetes to never come back. In fact, I’m obsessed with losing weight because of the fear it will come back. I want to lose more so when I come off it gaining some weight back won’t trigger diabetes again. The bags under my eyes is worse and my cheekbones stick out more. Idc what I look like as long as that horrible disease never returns.

Great video! I am 66 years old and a type 2 diabetic. My insulin injections make me gain weight. The Ozempic is the only thing that has brought my high blood glucose down to normal levels. It is a life saver to me. I am frustrated with fools who take it to lose weight as they cause shortages every time I try to renew my diabetic prescription. I do work out every day at home and in the gym as well as walking outside. I eat a very healthy menu of foods. Thank you for explaining that weight control depends on more than impulse control. Your videos are always packed with knowledge and good sense.

Thanks for shedding light on this, this is definitely not a new or unique phenomenon. This happened to Al Roker when he lost a lot of weight. Thank you for putting out sound medical information. I am so tired of people who spread medical disinformation causing others to make unsound decisions. I lost 70 lbs through dieting, not Ozempic. Yes, I can see it in my face, my arms, abs and everywhere else and I don't care. I go to the gym, eat properly. This is the body and face I have now. I wouldn't trade it for "before". Ozempic is a great tool where appropriate.

Thank you for approaching problem of obesity from scientific point of view and not the misleading „just eat less and move more“. There are so many things that influence metabolism… I have PCOS. View years ago I started gaining weight despite dieting and exercise. I was regularly complaining about that to my dr. And I was ignored. Gained about 20kg while starving myself, crying, exercising every day, trying keto… All this crap. I finally crossed the official „overweight“ line and then FINALLY my dr. Took it seriously and did blood tests to find out what is happening because after 20kg I am not just imagining it… Hypothyroidism and insulin resistance… I’ve got the thyroid meds and I feel like new person. I think dose might be still too low - but it’s already so much better… I finally started Ozempic to go back to my normal body that I miss so much… So far no side effects. I have doses for 2 months. Maybe later I will share if there was significant weight loss.

Ozempic (semaglutide) injection 0.5 mg, 1 mg, or 2 mg is an injectable prescription medicine used: => along with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. => to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events such as heart attack, stroke, or death in adults with type 2 diabetes with known heart disease. It is not known if Ozempic can be used in people who have had pancreatitis Ozempic is not for use in people with type 1 diabetes and it is a medication only given by our healthcare provider and personal doctor who is also monitoring the prescribed drug. Thanks Miss Andrea for lightening the dangers of internet trends and their misleading effects that have one us because you as a doctor you have heightened senses about the dangers ahead and you ring the caution bell to wake us from their hypnotizing and alluring effects. Thank you so much Miss Andrea god bless you for your kindness giving us knowledge and warn us from harm 💛💖👍😇🙏😄😃😀😍😉

Dr. Dray! I've been loving your videos for a couple of months, and I'm so glad you're addressing this. I'm a PA-C, and I practice in weight management. I've done a lot of prescribing of semaglutide (and now recently Tirzepatide), and there's been a recent influx of patients asking me questions about "ozempic face" and "am I going to gain all of my weight back after I stop taking the medication" or "will I have sagging skin." As a prescribing PA and a person who has also lost 100+ pounds and kept it off, I always emphasize that these medications are only a tool to help while you address the behaviors that led to weight gain in the first place. As you said, many people are predisposed to carrying more weight and, despite doing EVERYTHING "right," may need the help of medication to keep their weight under control long term. And for the rest of people, losing weight with semaglutide is no different than losing weight by simply changing dietary/exercise habits - if you resume the old patterns and don't have a deliberate and slow approach to the weight maintenance process, the weight will come right back. Semaglutide is a fantastic medication and is changing lives daily in our practice. It's so important to have a provider monitoring you and counseling you on the behavioral aspects of weight loss and maintenance to make the most use of this medication. I love your content, and I hope this video helps as many people as possible understand the truth about weight loss and semaglutide.

You have a good grasp of obesity. It’s so sad how many physicians still blame the patient for lack of willpower or just choosing to eat donuts and chips all day. Most obese patients have lost their weight multiple times, proving they do not lack willpower. Our bodies obviously have a strong mechanism to make people regain the weight. It’s not for lack of trying. Thank you for your very correct perspective!
