Recently, Pokemon investing videos have been filling my recommended feed here on KZbin. But seeing all these videos make me wonder: how easy is it to actually make money replicating some of these investment strategies . . . especially for something new and inexperienced to buying and selling Pokemon cards. In general, I think it’s ridiculous we get taxed on items that went through a sales tax.

It’s so hard to flip things and make it worthwhile since everyone and their mom has their hand out for a fee along the process. I don’t expect free services or anything but it’s a lot of percentages that add up really quickly. I’m only grading for long-term holds.

thats right this is the riskiest investment and the more knowledge u need, flipping isnt for new investors, good thing psa requieres a lot more than ebay to do the process, so many ppl skip it for that reason and good for them, also his taxes is the worst possible scenario?

Very well put togehter presentation as always! Though I believe you forgot to add the shipping & insurance costs both to and from PSA in your data. It is true that the grading of each card is $15 but adding the shipping both to and from PSA with obligatory insurance back from PSA adds up to quite a bit, especially with only just 5 cards.

That’s true. I intentionally left that out since most people (including me in this situation) submit in larger quantities which helps reduce the expense per card. You’re right though if this were just five cards the shipping and insurance would add about $50 to the expenses.

As for eBay, this was spot on. For people curious on how to dodge shipping fee’s, grading fee’s, eBay fee’s, and the same ability to write off a good 90% of all expenses, the answer is a rip and ship. Rip and ships, if done correctly that is, is a much more desirable option for most. Only thing is, it requires time, consistency, patience to build a following, fair pricing, knowledge, etc etc etc. I think it comes down to going through eBay for more fee’s and easy access for sales, or taking the gamble on a channel/rip and ship with the correct methodology and understanding on how to do it to dodge all the extra fee’s. WhatNot sellers with no tax knowledge being the worst example, KZbin sellers with a lot of tax knowledge being the best example. Just my own two cents, great video though! Also, once again, tax knowledge/write off’s is the biggest unspoken thing I feel 99% of people who try to sell cards don’t fully understand. Learning the basics at the very least is huge into lasting as a business VS disappearing come tax seaon.

@@2736492821 consult a tax professional or just do research and apply what works for your business. A lot of trial and error in my own case, but once you get it down/know the basics it helps a lot. Then from there it’s learning the more niche tax stuff that a professional can help with a lot

I always enjoy your videos man. Recently I acquired alot of japanese full art and art rares such as Tyranitar, Raichu from Paldea evolved etc. English versions are 2x to 3x more expensive than japanese. I enjoy the art, and I got both of these for like 12 dollars.

Value is what we see in the cards; regardless of price, if you enjoy the cards and the artwork then it sounds like a great value to me.

The days of buying bulk lots of 1st edition holo cards for less than 100 bucks are gone. You can still buy lots, but the risk is much higher now with the increased cost and uncle sam is more aware the bigger the dollar value on what you buy. Great video!

I would call this flipping which is more about making quick money. And in the case you are grading and enhancing what you buy before selling it so it’s really a business. Investing to me is a much more passive action. You buy, hold, and eventually sell. You might put a little work into buying and selling on each end but in general investing implies your money working for you while you sit on your investment.

I'll cover some long term items too (sealed products), but under this format of showing the process from start to finish, those will need more time to develop.

That’s a fair point. Many people treat them as synonymous, but I agree, the duration and intent make a difference.

I also agree, investing is a different strategy - buy to hold long term. Meanwhile, flipping has the connotation of buying to sell short term. Often as quick as possible. That being said I loved the video, great job with it! You put a lot of effort into your videos and it shows. I enjoyed this one.

Only margins to make a difference would be to sell off eBay (fb marketplace or discord). I have an ebay and I do like selling on their platform. PayPal processing fees 3% (goods & services) versus ebay's listing fees can make those margins more.

That’s true, but eBay is usually a much larger audience and efficient platform. You’re right though, that could make a significant difference in profit margin, especially over numerous sales.

Kinda demoralizing, but very informative and gives me solid targets to focus on when buying and selling cards. I'm not a flipper, I just sell some cards out of collections I buy to fuel the hobby.

Honestly, that's the best starting point and my personal strategy too. Buy collections, keep the ones I need, sell the extras to help fund future collection purchases. It can still be profitable but is also a fun way to engage with Pokemon more holistically.

A lot of searching through eBay and occasionally other platforms . . . I've had plenty of auction misses and collections that just weren't worth it though. It's become much more difficult to find value, but every now and then something comes along@@Dr.Magikarp

The IRS is skipping the $600.00 dollar rule again this upcoming year screw the tax side of it and if they seriously delved that deep into every single person who sells literally anything as a side hussle but I do understand the eBay fees shipping etc…

I think the IRS dropped the mandatory 1099K threshold on selling platforms to $5000 this year as they work to phase in the $600 threshold. For most people, they could probably go under the radar (assuming eBay doesn't send 1099's anyway), but that would technically be illegal and isn't advisable. Personally, I report my earnings and pay my taxes; however, I also complain about it and regularly advocate for lower taxes and better stewardship from our debt-addicted government.

There is no right or wrong answer. If someone wants something bad enough they will buy it no matter the price. I'm a successful dealer. I sell at top dollar, and I get the prices I want. Also know your audience.
