We have all seen the News stories.. Every day brings another story about eye watering insurance premiums for Range Rovers. I have recently bought and insured a Range rover sport 21 plate. I also used to work in the insurance industry. I discuss why some people may get a high quote and what steps they can take to reduce the premium. My insurance cost £800 for the year... A little bit different from the £10,000+ premiums discussed in the news. How did I get such a low premium? Watch and find out...

2017 Rangerover Vogue, I held on for 2 hours waiting to speak to a human at my insurance company, I wanted to explain that I parked the vehicle behind electric gates on a private drive and had installed camera surveillance, I had also disabled the keyless go feature which I gathered was the cause of most thefts, they would not recognise any of these measures because the underwriters don't acknowledge them. What chance have we got !!!!

There are plenty of insurers who do recognise these things. The problem is many insurers are just shells/brands for a larger insurer. They use a one size fits all approach and likely do not even have their own underwriters. We have to shop around to get the best for our situation. The days of staying with one company are long gone.

I could give you my top 3 but they might quote high for you. It takes some time and effort which is why people cant be assed and end up with excessive premiums..

For goodness sake, what a load of nonsense, Just shop around like everyone else in the market. I was in Guildford yesterday and every other car is a Range Rover, how do their owners insure them ? I just insured my 17 plate 4.4 Autobiography for £1,200 through Admiral which I thought was very fair. I park on my drive and I live just outside London. The first comment on this feed says he waited two hours on hold before he was told they wouldn’t insure it….. what an idiot !! Why would you do that ? Just go on comparison sites Honestly, everyone needs to grow up and use some common sense.

I have a RR Velar D240 my premium shot up an extra £200 but still hundreds cheaper than the comparison sites who wanted twice as much, did look at upgrading in the near future to a RR Sport but premium for the petrol were way above £2000 so altered to see diesel in same car format cheapest was £796 so it’s a diesel upgrade for sure. Great video thanks for the insight on insurance companies.

The similarities between yourself and my situation is remarkable, I have recently purchased a 21 plate hst sport JLR wouldn’t insure but like yourself I managed a £1090 policy still well above last years HSE quote of £650 but I can live with it, and your spot on the sport is an amazing car can even watch the dash tv parked at the shops, hopefully insurance might reduce next year 🤞

What a great channel i wanted to purchase a Range Rover Evoque on a 2015 plate, it also has the ghost imobiliser, did not know what ghost imobiliser meant but from having seen Mad Maz and the battle truck well that has a ghost button system so i can fully relate the information from ThatGearGuy is invaluable thank you so much as on the internet there are wild stories and none i found explained the ins and outs as you have ❤ Thank you again - best of luck in the future!

I sold my 2017 RRS last month, having owned it from new, I live in the country side a long way away from any city, in 2021 my insurance was £220 per year, in 2023 it was £590, so before the used car prices completely collaspe, I sold it. Now a happy 2023 BMW M540d owner, with £330 insurance for the year 😀just as all the floods started 😞 roll-on summer !

A strange twist regarding named drivers, I have car insurance and so does my wife. A friend of ours has put me on her car insurance (I do actually drive it) and was surprised to find that her premium dropped substantially. Realistically I am sure that statistics driven insurance companies recognise that some elderly drivers are less at risk of an accident if they call on someone a little younger to drive them for the longer trips. A factor that probably skews insurers against many of the Landrover products is that so many disappear overseas never to be seen again. Cynically I also wonder how many TDV6s with snapped crankshafts were disposed of and reported as stolen too...

I recon in the real world only a very small percentage of RR owners are getting reasonable quotes. I gave up and moved on.

Insurance on my RR doubled last year, 3 insurers refused to quote stating "we want to reduce risk in our portfolio". This video seems to be trying brush that under the carpet by saying it only affects the super high end cars which generally require specialist insurance anyway. RR are not only difficult to insure at the moment, but also 2x the cost to insure as they were 3 years ago. It's not hard to prove this, call up a different insurer and ask for a quote. No accidents, driveway, garage, max NCD make no difference.

Everyone will have a different experience based on multiple factors. The video is intended to show this. My quote was very reasonable but I did search for it. Many insurance companies will want to eradicate risk from portfolios at certain times. My experience will not be the same as yours and vice versa. My point is that good premiums can be found with some work for the majority of customers.

I would also add that all car insurance has pretty much doubled. That is a general insurance issue and not a RR one. It is just more noticeable on higher premium policies.

Too many people out there spend too much money on a car they can barely afford and complains they can’t afford the insurance. Stop pretending to be rich. If you can truly afford to slap 100k on a depreciating asset, 5-10k per year on insurance shouldn’t bother you.

Something to consider..it's not so much the cost of the Rover is approaching "super car". Territory..it should be highlighted that the Range Rover is far more common to see and less to keep in the road in general than that of a Lambo. The insurance cost should be corrected downward once proper theft prevention has been installed.

The problem is they are comparitively common compared to supercars. Being common means lots get crashed, vandalised and stolen. Those stats harm premiums. I completely agree regards security. Insurers need to be more engaged when it comes to tweaking premiums to account for enhanced security options. Currently some will do that but many will not. They tend to reside in "the computer says NO" category..

Most of the RR's that suffer from this problem can disable the Keyless system with a simple button press in the car. "Simples"

I found many quotes were cheaper when on the drive rather than inside a garage. I wondered if that was because they get a lot of claims where the damage was whilst they were parking in the garage? More of an issue as cars got bigger. Parents had a MK4 Golf and that barely fitted width wise, you had to be fairly skinny to open the door and get out.

It would be interesting to know the difference in price of insurance between two exactly the same vehicles apart from one with and one without smart/keyless entry... The removal of the key and ignition barrel was always going to cause problems. I worked with the system prior to it going into production on vehicles it was challenging. Pretty good price on the insurance what was the total policy excess ? 👍

£500 excess which is pretty standard for me. I never claim for small things on insurance even if you have zero excess they just load your quote by a huge percentage next time around..

the fiesta being most stolen model is a red herring. Yes there are more total but the rate of theft is much less. Even JLR PR are using this trick. But take rates and latest stat is one in 20 RRS’ stolen!

To answer a comment, of course, I tried the comparison websites, the cheapest was £1780 but none of them allowed you to enter relevant security upgrades and that is why I held on to speak to my previous insurers. You must have multi-cover or some other reason for such a reasonable premium, lucky you !!!!

Funnily enough in the FB reels, today I seen how easy these are to steal using a key relay and a obd box.

That is the same for all keyless entry systems. Crims can also hide out and copy your keys unlocking signal with devices like the Flipper Zero. Range Rovers make the headlines because they cost so much but these devices seek vulnerability in the keyless system as a whole.

@@thatgearguy totally, but by the sounds of it range rovers have a secondary security measure, but it appears that some cheap obd box would easily bypass this. I think range rovers are more liquid to criminals. All the G's want one, plus even if they end up being striped, they are easy to get rid off with a nice return due to the amount that are on our roads. If you steal a Lamborghini, there isn't going to be as much of an open market for parts. I'll see if I can find that real.

This happened to me recently. My insurance went from £350 to £520. Two days later I then received an email stating that my excess, which was £400 (£200 compulsory and £200 additional) would be £1200!. Managed to reduce renewal to £470 but had to swallow the excess hoping I do not have a claim

Thanks for sharing Rimcell. Which vehicle was it? Insurance has gone up across the board. The reasons are multifaceted. They have had increases in electricity and general bills like the rest of us. The insurance companies have also had a pretty awful couple of years with flood damage, wind damage and of course an increase in crime such as theft and vandalism. As most people have discovered the Police are rarely interested in catching car, motorbike, cycle thieves or even house burglars. So these things are happening more often. All this effects how much our insurance premiums cost. Even potholes are a factor as the insurance companies will often end up paying for damage to vehicles. Its like a perfect storm in terms of insurance premium increase. It certainly is not a Range Rover specific problem but it will manifest strongly in larger premiums. With RR being one of the most popular luxury vehicles it is no surprise they are catching flak..

@@rimcell The other suggestion (and excuse me if you are already well aware) is that you must shop around. The industry is now set up so that at certain times of year insurers will offer huge discount for new business. No insurers offer any loyalty discount or benefit for repeat custom. So in effect we all have to swap our insurance companies on a yearly basis to find the best premiums. If you arent doing this you will be paying around 20-30% more than you need to.

They are very reliable too you know, and parts supply is excellent. I live in the Outer Hebrides and my SVR cost £0:87p a year to insure.... (Disclaimer - costs may vary if you live in the in the real world)

Reliability for me has been great. Parts I do not know. Insurance is of course expensive but the point being, it is expensive for most luxury cars. I pay no more for the RR than I would a similar spec Merc, BMW or Jag..

High price insurance for the first year or two ok, but value reduces by 50% in 2-3 years so no longer justifies high price insurance, will be scrap value in 7-8 years so not exactly lambo Supercar category is it really

It is from an insurers view point. Lambos also have very high depreciation save for the limited edition models which retain or increase values. In those terms there is little difference.

Interesting point which highlights that insurance has increased across the board. If you live in certain parts of major UK cities you are going to experience much higher premiums. Even if you live in quiet superbs or rurally it will have increased somewhat.

My London friend bought a new RR last year (Keyless) with no problems. This year his renewal was £20k!! 3 other companies blanked him. He is only paying monthly until JLR sort the theft issue out. Insurance is not merely mathematical and risk based. It's profit driven first. Living in a low crime rate area of Scotland, parking our 2016 Evoque in a garage. Our insurance has gone from £400 brand new to £2,200 in 2024 with no claims, no convictions. They have said our car is now only worth £16,000 yet quote that. Tried to take out third party with little risk to the insurance - but they quote more.🤷‍♂🤦‍♂

This theory does not align with my experience as I own both types of car. I store them together. Full no claims, no points snd both stored in secure garage in the country borh have trackers etc. Porsche 911 Carrera4 GTS 2022 premium £900, RRS Autobiography D350 premium £4k. Porsche cost 50% more than RRS.

Is the RRS new or older model? Did you shop around for insurance or do you stick with the same company for all? There is a benefit when insuring rarer vehicles because statistically they have limited history regards crashes, vandalism and theft. But the difference in premiums wouldnt normally be as large as you are seeing. Thanks for dropping the info. It's the new model. Always shop around but this time existing company (saga) would not even quote. Tried everyone and two different comparison sites. Most would not even quote. In the end only option was Admiral multicar policy added to Porsche policy.

This doesnt make much sense, comparing a Lambo to a Range Rover. A better comparison is the Porsche Cayenne which currently is less than half the price on insurance, thats a new P400 vs Cayenne S. Not all thefts are relay attack related either.

They might be half price for your quote. For me they were a couple of hundred pounds more. There is no set national price for vehicle insurance. It is all based on your specific circumstance which is kind of the point of the video.

Sorry chum your worng i have a jaguar f pace sport had it for 4 years now kept on a private drive not in sight of the road in a small west sussex village. My insurance trebled this year. When i asked why i was told SUVs are all being loaded this year along with EVs as the risk for these vehicles is higher than other vehicles. Shopping around i managed to get insurance just over double last year's premium. The truth is EVs are so expensive to repair and Range Rovers are being stolen almost as fast as jlr can make them, so all SUV drivers are sharing the burden for it.

What the crime stoppers doing, not enough, who regulates insurance companies, how can they refuse to cover, is any government agency to look into this,ie how much these companies can charge or should these companies be nationalised for the people, I am facing similar problem just 4 years old car , no claims, 17 years of driving, secured drive parking, can be parked locked garage, all other security, cameras etc , even then these companies don’t underwrite insurance covers, where the regulations,

@@thatgearguy yeah but in the meantime all JLR insurance are gone through the roof and am talking from experience, I have a disco sport which isn't even a Range Rover but the cheapest quote I get in London is £227 a month and I have 4 years ncb, am 35 and live in a residential area with my car being park in a safe place. Furthermore I have to pay £120 a month for the extended warranty as the car is as unreliable as you can get plus the tracker and other that i need to renew yearly...sorry but there is a real issue with JLR and their reaction seems to be very late and simply due to the fact that their sales are now affected by it

@@thebigfella72 Good info thank you. All these real premiums will help people to make informed choices. So much better than the scare stories in the news. Their can be great benefit to ensuring more unusual vehicles like yours. The lack of theft due to their scarcity works on your side. One such "trick" we used to use was to buy for instance an Alpina B3 rather than the BMW M3. Obviously a ton of M3s got stolen due to their popularity. However few people had even heard of the Alpina models which were uprated M3s in essence. Premiums were considerably cheaper.
