In Brazil's MC community around 2018 this used to be so common, like youtubers selling "regedits" for "low latency" and "pvp smoothness", it's so funny seeing it again

From what I've seen, there's also a big community in Brazil solely focused on showing off the many different minecraft pvp modpacks (sorta Lunar Client, BLC ripoffs). These all seemed to stem from a video series "How to code a Minecraft PVP Client" from a youtuber named Eric Golde

yeah, this regedit thing is pretty famous in this "free fire" game community, here in brazil this fortnite mobile knockoff used to be pretty famous and i remember seeing people saying they were using "regedits" to become better at the game, i remember one day this kid came to my house with his phone asking me to remove a virus, apparently it was slow and it was showing ads, ads that, with words that can prevent youtube to delete this comment, showed females with absent clothes, when i asked him how he got the phone to that state he said he was trying to, in his own words, "download an op regedit", when i asked what the hell he meant by that he explained to me how these regedits were like hacks and would make him very good at the game, then i explained to him that this "op regedit" thing was completely bullshit and that regedit was something made to computers to edit some settings and that it isnt some cheat to use in games, yada yada yada, and i factory reset the phone, after that i did some research and found out more about this thing, and also how bad this games community is, its bizarre how misinformation is common in this community, its full of people making videos sharing viruses disguised as something that will do miracles like making the game run faster or make you better at the game, and its disgusting how they are doing this in a community thats full of very young, and consequently, stupid children

Changing the MTU will definetly improve network stability, but calculating the MTU size is a pain since you need to estimate what is going on when sending packets. Also a lot of trial and error is involved. Though, usually the default MTU is enough, I had to change it thanks to having a scuffed routing: IPv6 -> DSLite -> IPv4 -> VPN -> IPv4 -> Gateway -> IPv6 -> Remote Server With roughly 30 hops or more inbetween

as someone who is studying computer networking, these edits do absolutely nothing good. a lot of the changes either enable something that is already enabled by default (synattackprotect, sackopts), decrease your networking performance (mtu, mss, ttl), or just downright do nothing (systemresponsiveness, networkthrottlingindex) and change things that have nothing to do with the types of connections you'd be making while playing a game (maxuserport, disablestrictnamechecking, and the maxconnectionsperserver values that he mentions in the video that are meant for SMB). obviously, do not use these without backing up your registry first, and definitely do not expect these to not secretly turn off certain protections while pretending to be an "upgrade."

Man I remember back in 2012-2013 about badlion (big pvp server in minecraft back then) posting about TCPNoDelay and TCPAckFrequency as a way to help stabilize my connection and my packets send faster to the server. I was so excited because pvping back in the days, I felt like my connection always fucked me over and lost me fights I should have won. After applying regedit, there were times where it felt smooth while other times where it felt like shit. In conclusion, I didn't feel a significant change to my internet and I never touched it again. But wow, this video made me look back at my PvP days the amount of snake oil there was in the community is absurd.

You might have at least benefited from forcing TCP_NODELAY, because Minecraft only has done so on its own since version 1.8.1. The former setting absolutely does not help with a bad internet connection (in particular unstable upstream) because it doubles the amount of ACK packages for received data in the worst case.

TcpNoDelay = 0 is when your OS will stall packets that aren't big enough to be transferred efficiently. (Because Tcp will add additional packet headers and checksums). By stalling these packets and waiting either until a time limit occurs (some value in ms this is calculated by the algorithm based on the header size and packet size) AND/OR until the stalled buffer has a buffer with enough data in it to be packed into 1 packet with a size where the additional 1 header is negligible.

In short: The main time you’d consider disabling Nagle's algorithm would be when you care a lot about latency, and much less about throughput. It will almost always hurt throughput, often quite drastically. And that leads to the big problem: if you send too many packets with the Nagle algorithm disabled (TCP_NODELAY set), you can end up not only hurting throughput, but also hurting latency. Also, monetization of custom regedits is just plain stupid and often a pretence to get malicious code on your system.

MTU has an extremely noticeable effect in some games, mostly MMORPGs. Lowering MTU reduces the maximum size of a packet before it gets sent, meaning you theoretically send packets more frequently. Older games like Mabinogi and Black Desert seem to get the most positive benefit from this, but I have no idea if it helps minecraft at all.

Changing the packet size also does nothing and can actually make your network slower since your computer is having to do unpacking or buffering depending on what you set it to. Pretty much all network gear a home user is going to touch is going to be set to 1500 MTU including the internet connection. Some network gear also calls this jumbo frames.

I didn't know Regedit is a thing and I am on Linux so I don't think there is even a way of editing chunks of the OS like that also I am not stupid enough to try to do it as it doesn't work and it might destroy the OS installation. also it annoys me that they call things that are not what they are actually are

The registry is 'under the hood' just a bunch of files. The equivalent is /etc on linux, which following unix guidelines exposes everything as a file rather than needless abstractions.

Also in the Neagle's algorithm example, I don't think you can disable it globally without modifying the kernel, then recompiling it. Unless of course, you set a socket rule for your application to not use it, but obviously you'd also need access to the source code of this app (e.g Minecraft).

there are certain registry modifications that can improve performance. for example, changing Win32PrioritySeparation can instantly make a measurable impact on your framerate (compared to another/the default value). other modifications can be used to reduce the system load by disabling unnecessary background services. NEVER pay anyone for this though.

What does Win32PrioritySeperation do?
@mist6302
@mist6302 Ай бұрын
@@rockpie.squashfsaccording to the microsoft learn article “Win32_OperatingSystem class”, it changes how the kernel schedules how much execution time processes should be given, how much extra time foreground processes should be given, and the duration of the length of quantums. “A quantum is a unit of execution time that the scheduler is allowed to give to an application before switching to other applications”

@@rockpie.squashfs it changes how the kernel schedules execution execution time spent on different processes. the key controls how long the units of execution time are, whether or not their lengths are variable, and how much foreground processes are prioritized over background processes. it’s written about in a microsoft learn article titled “Win32_OperatingSystem class”
